I suppose I shouldn't just bitch and then not talk about alternatives, right? If you saw my post yesterday, you might gather that I have a thing about fic awards. But [livejournal.com profile] larielromeniel ran across a good alternative:

Holiday Recathon 2008

It's multi-fandom. (Doctor Who, Torchwood, Iron Man, Supernatural, and others) And despite the name, the fics don't have to be holiday themed.

OOOH.

Though if I actually took the time to go over and rec fic, it'd probably all be by you or [Bad username or site: shinyopals / @ livejournal.com]. Which always makes me feel like I'm just recing my friends! (This would be your major problem with fic awards, wouldn't it?)

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but if you're friends with people because you like their fic....chicken/egg, no? Most of the people on my flist who are fic writers I friended originally because I was enamoured of their writing and wanted to bask in their magical glow.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's definitely a good point, and one thing that probably makes recs a bit different.

I think the problem with fic awards is that they can become a sort of... self-congratulatory thing for the most popular circle in fandom, which sort of invalidates their purpose. Though I don't want to speak for [Bad username or site: mrv3000 / @ livejournal.com]'s issues with them. :D

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure there is a "most popular circle" in this fandom--it's so huge. There's maybe circles who think they're the most popular, heh.

Gotta say, I'm getting a bit tired of some of the smug "Oh well I looked at the nominees and they suck" remarks cuz, well, I'm nominated? So, like, ta, I guess I suck?

It's art. It's largely subjective. Popular/not popular, sucking/not sucking is really rather relative.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats on being nominated! I really haven't paid much attention to the current DW fic awards, to be honest. My issues are more with fic awards in general.

Though it CAN certainly be nice. I had an old Harry Potter fic I wrote something like four years ago just get nominated for something, and I won't pretend that didn't give me a momentary thrill.

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly if people were better about reccing on their own, and leaving comments and reviews and such, things like this wouldn't give me such a thrill. Talk about something directly related to how many friends you have and how popular as a fandom personage you are: comments and reviews.

I try to rec something new on my other journal at least a few times a week because its important to do that, I think. And it's nice to find an author you really like and then be able to see what *they* like because chances are you'll like it too.

So I'm definitely going to go over and rec some stuff. And yeah I'm sure it'll be the same stuff I've recced a million times before, but I rec it not because it's from my friends, but because I really think it's some of the best writing by anyone, anywhere, ever and if it can get more exposure, (and I honestly think it could all use more) then I'm not going to be fussed that the authors are on my flist and that I talk with them a lot about writing and that we're in a bit of a mutual admiration society with one another.

I think that Frances was talking about *just* me or [livejournal.com profile] shinyopals, which wouldn't even be branching out to the rest of her flist. And it feels a little too cliquish because the 3 of us discuss writing with each other all the time.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's always a problem. Feels a bit... What that term for when you give a family member a job or promotion? I'm drawing a blank for some reason. :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That's it! Mwah.

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
We could have the "[livejournal.com profile] goldy_dollar, [livejournal.com profile] mrv3000 and [livejournal.com profile] shinyopals fic awards"... ;-) We could even make sparkly graphics in MS Paint for the winners! *Nods*

*Generally ignores fic awards for the sake of own sanity*

[identity profile] solielle.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, good! Because yesterday I thought of a fic that I never saw pop up on any communities, but was totally excellent and more people should read it. *goes to rec*

[identity profile] solielle.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I'm wondering if I should link you to it, or wait until The Great Unveiling. Also whether everybody already knew about it, and I just didn't because I don't have the author friended, or something. Hmm....

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The Great Unveiling would be good. :D

[identity profile] outforawalk.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for linking to that Recathon. I am hopeful that I will find something new. I'll admit that XF fandom spoiled me. When I was first active in fandom, there were a couple of really great rec sites that updated regularly. I miss those rec archives. (Of course, I am totally unwilling to put in the sort of work that would require myself, so I will just *sigh* and whine.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I know - there was one multi-fandom rec archive I loved. If something got mentioned there, you knew it'd be worth your time to read.
