Merry Christmas! Hope everyone's having a good one. Mine's sort of still in progress and actually I'll be without computer access for the next couple of days. However, I did catch the new Who special. Priorities!

Under the Ron Moore style of television, we know that it's been a while for the Doctor since Journey's End. He's been doing Doctor stuff, like...composing music for the Proms. The usual. But the important thing is he's actually cracking a smile! What does this mean??

Fairly quickly we're introduced to a new creature. Apparently the Cybermen have decided to make a cat. Because...cats are soulless creatures and therefore easily adaptable as pets by the Cybermen? Whatever the reason, you must remember that this is NOT some dude wearing a mask. Because that'd be just silly.

Meet The Next Doctor. They instantly get into trouble.

Earning a "you frickin' morons!" from Rosita. Already Rosita makes for a great Companion.

Is it bad that all I could think of during this scene was "OMG, DT's back!"?

Rosita has the power of teleport!!! Any mention of which seemed to have gotten cut out. Well, I'm assuming it's teleport as opposed to flight since she managed to get up a 3 story building at the same moment as the Cybercat. The Doctor could use a Companion with handy powers.

"Rosita. Good name." I'm totally claiming this as a Rose reference! \o/

They kind of had me going about possible regeneration from Ten to Eleven, what with the other "Doctor's" flashbacks, right up until this scene. They tried to keep it subtle, but I knew he wasn't the Doctor at this moment.

I just thought this was pretty, the red against the black and white.

The TARDIS: Tethered Aerial Release Developed In Style
Awww! [SQUISH]

Chucks shot! Oh, and sorry but your real name is Jackson Lake and you watched your wife die and then you absorbed my life. Happens more often than you'd think...

AWWWWWWWW! They showed all 10 Doctors! [LOVES]

"MEOW, bitches!"

"Damn! The Cybercat!"

Rosita is busy wondering why she's getting told off for smacking the evil woman when earlier the Doctor grinned with glee when Jackson exploded the heads of some Cybermen. Rosita then comes to the conclusion that the Doctor has a wildly fluctuating line of morality.

Did...did the Doctor just pull a sword out of his pants? o_O

AAAHHH!! HIS BACK!! Ahem. I mean, the Doctor saved Jackson's son! YAY!!

"Ray?!"
"I couldn't help it. It just popped in there."
"What?! What 'just popped in there?!'"
"I... I... I tried to think..."
"What did you DO, Ray?!"
"It's the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man."

Jackson: Don't you have anything to live for?
Doctor: No. RTD doesn't let me have shiny things. For more than 5 minutes anyway.

CyberKing: You're kidding me, right?
Balloon vs. Robot. And this is why DW is more awesome than EVERYTHING. :D

"Don't make me stop you. Really, don't. I have...powers."

"Pfffft. We have Cybercats. What kind of power could stop that?"

"How about the power...to move you. Oh, and glowing. Glowing pretty much signals your doom." [GLOWS]
[Cyberpeeps asplode]

It was a sunny day on Notal Five - perfect weather for the Cascading Dominoes Championships. After years of preparation, Steve was 5 dominoes from becoming his lifelong dream of Champion of the Universe (Dominoes Division) when a crackling glow lit the sky. He looked up with a "Hmm. That almost looks like the start of a transdimensional transport corridor. But that's only used on deserted planets--" WHAM.

The Doctor gets thanks. Awwwww. (The Doctor had "never" gotten any thanks before? Really?)

Companions just break his heart. WOE. (RTD, you are a bit of a bastard, aren't you?)

But yay! The Doctor's actually going off for Christmas dinner! :)

All in all, this was a fun episode! Pretty mindless, not terribly deep, but just fun. And not an anvil of angst! I think that requires drinking the whole bottle in the drinking game! [hic]

I was pleased that he went for dinner with Not!Doc, because I really thought we were in for another duck and run into the TARDIS. If Donna could actually remember what went down, I think she would be happy that he went to dinner with his new friends as well.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought he'd run out too, but was really happy he went. [pats him]

Am I the only one that thought it was a little funny that Jackson Lake forgot everything to get away from the pain of losing his family and thus took on being the Doctor. I mean, of all the people to become to get away from pain you get stuck with him? Bad luck mate...

[identity profile] cloudydaise.livejournal.com 2008-12-26 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
HAHA... now that you bring it up, that's an excellent point. Poor dude.

Companions don't break his hearts. He breaks them himself.
coughs*Rose*coughs*Donna*coughs*Mr Copper would have been a great companion*coughs, ....
Also! The timourous beastie!!! Didn't that remind you of someone???
Lol!

Companions don't break his hearts. He breaks them himself.

My thoughts exactly, when he said that!

The timourous beastie!!!

Yes, and from the same episode, "Where the hell have you been?"

I loved it! I had actually started writing up my review about 2 minutes before the end & wrote that I was sad he didn't go to dinner and then he did, yay!

I decided out the Jackson wasn't the Doctor at the bit with the stethescope too, but it was because of a really tiny thing which RTD talked about in Christmas Confidential; they only showed him checking one heart.

And! That bit when they were being dragged across the floor I was wondering if they were going end up with holes in their trousers....

& I love how capslock his hair got when he was in the balloon!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't even notice he only checked one heart! That's pretty interesting.

And aside from fearing for DT's back, I was thinking the same about the trousers. One of these days that brown suit is going to simply fall apart. :D

"Rosita. Good name." I'm totally claiming this as a Rose reference! \o/

Oh, definitely!! :D I automatically squeed after he said that, so I take that as a sign that it was a definite Rose reference. ;)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was cute. And also he said it in a very positive way - not sliding into a tailspin of angst from the thought of her crossing his mind. I think this is a good thing.

I was so glad that this hovered in between the giddy joy of TCI and the grief of TRB and VotD. It felt very appropriate. And 'Rosita. Good name.' was definitely a Rose reference. I know, because there are people getting pissed off about it. That's always a sure sign.

Is it bad that all I could think of during this scene was "OMG, DT's back!"?

Nope, because so did RTD. When they got to this part in the audio commentary, he said he feels quite guilty when watching these scenes. "No wonder the poor man's got a bad back!"

Lmao, the Dr did indeed pull a sword out of his pants. Even my Mum went "Where did he pull that from :o"

I liked the weird CyberCats, they were rather scary!

Don't watch the confidential, RTD is all like "YAY there's heartbreaking stuff to come" *kicks him*

Oh good Lord. And this is where I'm very happy that Ten II and Rose are off in the altverse. RTD seems determined to make the Doctor suffer, so at least there's that.

Thank you for your very entertaining review of the episode!

"Rosita. Good name." I'm totally claiming this as a Rose reference! \o/

Absolutely! I squeed out loud at that. For more evidence, see Butterfly's comment above!

I have to say that I was cringing during all those stunts too.

An entertaining episode with just the right balance of fun and angst (even if I did sob a bit at the 'break my heart' line; damn you RTD and DT!). A HUGE improvement on last year's special.

HEE. Exactly! :D I WANT ONE.

Rosita is busy wondering why she's getting told off for smacking the evil woman when earlier the Doctor grinned with glee when Jackson exploded the heads of some Cybermen. Rosita then comes to the conclusion that the Doctor has a wildly fluctuating line of morality.

XD I think the Doctor failed at being disapproving though. He sounded far too impressed!

Did...did the Doctor just pull a sword out of his pants? o_O

BIGGER ON THE INSIDE.

But I did NOT notice that the sword appearence was so random! XD

I did have to park my brtain in neutral, but TBH, that's where it normally is so I really enjoyed the special :D

Memories ~ RED DRESS OMG, Rosita bloody rocks, ripping off so many other films, why did Jackson assume that The Doctor never gets thanked? The Doctor dines *g*

:D Thanks!

And I know the Doctor has been thanked before. Maybe not on the massive scale, but he has by individuals and so on. I mean, didn't the Queen thank him in the last Christmas episode? So not sure what that was all about.

How 'bout the power to kill a yak? From 200 miles away? WITH MIND BULLETS.

DW + Tenacious D? = FANGASM

And true, wth, the Doctor TOTALLY gets thanked!!...Doesn't he? Erm...doesn't he?!

The world doesn't end because the Doctor has Christmas dinner. :D

Yes, sword from trousers. I totally noticed that.

Balloon vs. Tranzor-Z = awesomesauce. With a side of awesome. Also: DT should be forced to travel about with a wind machine to blow his hair around all sexily at all times.

And yes, during pretty much every stunt I was going "OMG! His back!!!"

Wonderful picture show. Especially with all ten Doctors.

I'm just so glad that not!Doctor didn't run out of the Tardis saying it's bigger on the inside than the outside. His reation was just so much better, "Wonderfully silly".

And it's about time RTD let the Doctor go to Christmas dinner...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I really did love that they showed the Doctors. Very snifty. And also I did like Jackson's reaction to the TARDIS, which I guess would fit since with some of the Doctor's memories, it probably wouldn't have freaked him out like other people.

I just watched and have been waiting to read reviews. Yours is the first I am posting in. LOL did you see my post of solidarity to you? I am so glad you liked it and I thought it was fun. There was a nice camaraderie between the Doctor and Jackson. And it was cool to see a male companion again. They break my heart socked me in the gut. I loved Rosita and it was absolutely a shout out to Rose. And OMG!Squee they showed all ten Doctors. They have a display just like that at the DW exhibit. I think from Jackson's POV the Doctor has never been thanked, but I hope that is not what the Doctor thinks because all his companions and many people he saved have thanked him. Of course there have been many others who didn't, so maybe that is what Jackson was picking up for.

I really enjoyed the special and that not everyone freaking died at the end. I actually loved Voyage of the Damned but damn it had me in tears. It was nice to see the Doctor with a bit of hope again and I am so happy he went to dinner. This show will never be the same to me without Rose and Donna's end broke my heart, but I am a scifi geek and RTD showed me why I love Doctor Who.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello! I haven't had a chance to catch up on LJ. :D

I really liked the Doctor and Jackson together. That was really fun. And I would totally be up for a man as a permanent companion. There's a different dynamic there that's really fun to see.

And they've got a Doctor display like what they showed? That's cool.

I'm not sure what to think about that whole "he never gets thanked" thing since it's not true. Like you, I hope that's not what the Doctor thinks. And if he does think that, he's not really been listening or something. It's weird.

To me this episode had a very good balance. RTD had his emo that he'll never be able to kick the habit of, but it didn't bog down the episode.

I was thinking more "the Iron Giant" with the Cyberking ;)

No evil Santas this year.

Also, when Rosita was telling the Doctor about how she met Jackson Lake, I kept waiting for her to say, "... and then he was there. He just grabbed my hand, and yelled, 'Run!'"

nerdy question

[identity profile] elismor.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Because I am totally unwilling to even so much as stick a toe into Whofandom, I ask the following:

Any scuttlebut on the significance of the names of the men Ms. Hartigan converted (or her name, for that matter)? I only ask because they made specific mention of the names three times, always in the same order, and that struck me as odd.

And her name just feels...familiar or something.

Re: nerdy question

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen anything about it, but I missed a lot of posts about it. Do you remember what their names were?

If there's no specific significance to them, maybe she repeated them because they never knew what her name was until that day?

[identity profile] cheapevilgirl.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
There is nothing wrong with mindless. In fact sometimes it's just what you need. But the mere mention of Donna's name almost made me cry.
