principia_coh has said that the article about LJ that's floating around isn't accurate, and she's always got the good info. Layoffs, yes. Everyone's gone, no.

But I suppose I should get around to backing up my journal. MEH. What a pain in the butt. It makes me wonder if it's really worth doing. The comments don't transfer over, and I've got most my fic hosted on a personal site... I guess it would be kind of sad to think that it could all go poof though.

Was about to say the same thing. I just installed and used it and I see all my posts, and all the comments in a searchable archive on my PC.

Does it? But that's not one that transfers everything to a different journal, is it? That just saves everything, yes? Which I guess I could do too. Or instead. *ponders*

LJArchive saves everything. It cannot transfer people's comments to elsewhere, though.

I'm just annoyed more than anything else -- LJ's not actually, you know, mentioned anything about it, and already people are screaming, "the end is nigh!"

I *would* think if they were closing up they'd at least give everyone some notice instead of one day pulling the plug.

Ooo! This does comments, too, and it was really fast for me despite my insanely huge 4000+ journal entries. And it can either save or transfer to another journal.

Oh! I looked at that one during the last LJ scare! And had a moment of "this is too hard! brain hurts!" :D But maybe I should take another look.

It is easier than it appears at first glance. There are some step-by-step instructions here.

Those are the Mac instructions. The PC instructions are a little more eye-crossing. :D

It doesn't transfer your comments to the other journal, though, just the posts. It does save both posts and comments to your hard drive.

(I use it and love it.)

Because you've got the easy Mac version. Hmph.

It makes up for all that time I paid for Netflix instant but couldn't watch it because I had a Mac. :)

I'm not expecting it to be necessary, but I did finally get around to downloading LJ Archive this morning. Pretty painless all told, and it does archive comments (it's a checkbox option).

I could just do that. If I have it all on my computer, it's not like I'd need it to be online somewhere.

And LJA is open source. In the unlikely event that LJ really does go *poof*, betcha somebody designs a way to upload everything elsewhere in pretty short order.

I am as usual amused by the LJ reaction. OMG, they were laid off with NO WARNING and NO SEVERANCE. THOSE BIG RUSSIAN MEANNIES! Well, yeah. That's how layoffs generally work. (Not that I don't think layoffs suck.) And the usual racism, but that's less amusing.

Do most companies even have severance pay? When I was laid off at my last job, I just got paid through the last day I worked. Oh, and unused vacation time.

I was handed pamphlets for unemployment and COBRA and told to go home in the middle of the afternoon, though I was paid until the end of the day. Such generosity!

Usually it's only the highest execs who get severance, I think, if anyone does.

Sounds about right. I'm pretty sure all I'd get at my current job would be the same - time paid + vacation unused.

In other news, I think I might have broken my LJArchive. It's been on "merging downloaded data" for the last 40 minutes. 75,000 comments killed its little brain!

Where would you go to back your LJ up? Is there a specific place or method?

Thanks for the link. I have passed it along to some friends. While I don't expect the sky to *actually* fall, it is probably wise to be backed up. Following those directions made life relatively simple for me.

I will say, it makes me feel pathetic to have no comments at all on the back up journal. Geez. It's like 6th grade all over. ;)

Heh, I saved mine using LJ Archive when I saw the news, but felt that screaming "THE END IS NIGH" was too much effort, since usually things are blown way out of proportion. You'd think if they were that stuck they'd have buy-paid-account drives or upgrade all free accounts to plus accounts or something, rather than just POOF NO MORE LJ.

Also I did discover, thanks to LJ archive having some lovely statistics, that you are the most frequent commenter on my LJ with about a hundred more than Frances, in second place. Also, I've used the word "bears" 23 times.

Good point. And panicking really does require a lot of effort.

There was a first article floating around - actually I think it was a blog - that misstated the facts. Cue panic. :D

I'm backing stuff up through LJ Archive and just created an Insane Journal account (with the same name because it's just too much for me to think of a new one ^_^) just in case.

But I'm pretty sure LJ should be okay. Hopefully.
