This is for
goldy_dollar who I fear is either going to hurt something or develop a twitch soon. This is a post to love on the main companions of New Who.
The one rule - you do not get to make any negative comments about anyone. I have my own character quibbles about all three of them, but this isn't the place for that. This is a love post! :D If your comment is "I like so-and-so, BUT...[insert analysis of their flaws]..." I will delete it! Mwahahahaha.
Rose is Awesome

Rose is the most changed of the three. When first we see her, she's this teen-going-on-adult who's stuck in her life - in a dead-end job, just plodding along. By the end, she's someone who's crossing universes, helping rig up time machines and leading military types.
She wanders off and is jeopardy-friendly, jumping into things with varying results. (Sound like anyone we know?) But unlike that certain someone we know, Rose often followed her heart more than anything. She cared about the people she met. And following her heart led her back to the other universe.
She's someone who wound up being very emotionally tied to the Doctor - something that went both ways. She even merged with the time vortex at one point just to save him.
Martha is Awesome

With Martha there wasn't so much a change in character, as her own realization of her worth. She was always strong and smart and capable. She didn't need to grow into that, but rather just needed to discover it in herself.
At first Martha's attracted to the flash of the whole thing - the car and its driver are what interest her - but she begins to see this giant universe open up. And there are things even more important to her than that flash.
She had to deal with things like racism and rejection, but they didn't defeat her. She traveled the Earth for an entire year, enduring an incredibly hard life, and she still wasn't defeated. Even as the Master had captured her, ready to kill her - still not defeated.
Donna is Awesome

Donna needed a bit of both - from when we first see her, she needed to grow as a person, but she also needed to realize she was worth something. Unfortunately things went a bit off the rails for her ending, which is why I hope her story is not quite over.
Anyway, Donna realized there was a lot more to the universe before even finding the Doctor back. Things were big and important, and Donna got that. She wanted to be a part of it.
She offered unconditional friendship to the Doctor - something he desperately needs now. She even sacrificed her own life in order to right a timeline.

And if there's one thing I love in a TV character, it's the ability to make smart, snappy combacks.

I also think I like the way Cornell writes her better than just about any other staff writer.

*nods*
My new theory on Martha is that being with the Doctor taught her to be a little bit selfish. And I mean selfish as a GOOD thing - kind of like how RTD uses it to describe Rose. I think what we see from Martha in S3 is someone who feels like she always has to take care of other people - first her family, then the Doctor, and then her family again at the end. But I think the person we see at the end of LotTL and in TW and S4 is someone who has a stronger understanding of herself, and someone who isn't afraid to go after what she wants. Tom being the best example, I think, but I also love the way she sticks with UNIT even after the Doctor gives her a hard time about it.

I like Rose, BUT...
*Smooch*
The three of them are all completely, utterly awesome. And they totally need to spend more time together swapping stories/tips for saving the world/brands of bog-proof mascara.
Also, I NEED AN ICON WITH ALL THREE OF THEM! I DON'T HAVE ONE. THIS WILL NOT DO. I'm actually going to have to look for one, aren't I?

Re: I like Rose, BUT...
I would have LOVED to have seen the three of them sitting around swapping stories and completely freaking the Doctor out by not letting him in the room. "WHATEVER ANYONE SAYS, IT'S NOT TRUE!" :D
Bwaha... girls freak him out, y'know.

It is sad that they didn't have much screen time together in Journey's End, isn't it? The three of them together just makes for epic awesome!

It's really sad that he seems to be in a current mindset of it not being worth it since he's got a loner mentality again. Yes there will often be heartache, but aren't you better off for having known them all, Doctor?

Rose, as
It's surprising how much more I liked Martha when she came back in S4. I just hadn't connected with her that much in S3, but when she came back, it was like, wow, this girl's got it going on! Freema said she outgrew the Doctor after S3, but I don't agree. I think she outgrew her need for approval. The Doctor was a huge symbol of that because of her unrequited love for him. She finally realized she didn't need him to love her back and went after her own life. When she comes back, she's all the stronger, and you can see the positive effects not just in her relationship with the Doctor and her engagement to Tom, but in her new closeness with her mother.
Donna, like Rose, knew what she wanted and how she wanted to live, and she went for it. I am so impressed by that. So many women who get past their mid-thirties without realizing their dreams give up. Donna didn't take that route. She made her life better and was a true friend to the Doctor when he needed one most. I think my favorite Donna moment is near the end of "Midnight" when she sees the look on the Doctor's face, and without even a word steps forward and envelops him in a much-needed hug. They had the best of times, the two of them, and he'll carry her with him forever.
*Sigh* I'm all misty now. I love character love!

*nods* Rose really did have that classic hero mytharc. That whole journey myth was hers.

This is me exactly. I really do blame the arc she was saddled with in S3. Once she got to shed that, I really grew to love the character.

Totally agree. The Doctor isn't some sort of childhood playmate you outgrow. *aims a shotgun at the Peter Pan analogy* Like you said - it was her need for approval she outgrew, which included the Doctor's approval.

And not only was she trying to find the Doctor back, she was getting involved investigating strange happenings. She really was becoming her own brand of awesome. It's just a shame she never believed it about herself.

Donna was so good at reading him and being there for him as a friend.
