This is for [livejournal.com profile] goldy_dollar who I fear is either going to hurt something or develop a twitch soon. This is a post to love on the main companions of New Who.

The one rule - you do not get to make any negative comments about anyone. I have my own character quibbles about all three of them, but this isn't the place for that. This is a love post! :D If your comment is "I like so-and-so, BUT...[insert analysis of their flaws]..." I will delete it! Mwahahahaha.

Rose is Awesome

Rose is the most changed of the three. When first we see her, she's this teen-going-on-adult who's stuck in her life - in a dead-end job, just plodding along. By the end, she's someone who's crossing universes, helping rig up time machines and leading military types.

She wanders off and is jeopardy-friendly, jumping into things with varying results. (Sound like anyone we know?) But unlike that certain someone we know, Rose often followed her heart more than anything. She cared about the people she met. And following her heart led her back to the other universe.

She's someone who wound up being very emotionally tied to the Doctor - something that went both ways. She even merged with the time vortex at one point just to save him.

Martha is Awesome

With Martha there wasn't so much a change in character, as her own realization of her worth. She was always strong and smart and capable. She didn't need to grow into that, but rather just needed to discover it in herself.

At first Martha's attracted to the flash of the whole thing - the car and its driver are what interest her - but she begins to see this giant universe open up. And there are things even more important to her than that flash.

She had to deal with things like racism and rejection, but they didn't defeat her. She traveled the Earth for an entire year, enduring an incredibly hard life, and she still wasn't defeated. Even as the Master had captured her, ready to kill her - still not defeated.

Donna is Awesome

Donna needed a bit of both - from when we first see her, she needed to grow as a person, but she also needed to realize she was worth something. Unfortunately things went a bit off the rails for her ending, which is why I hope her story is not quite over.

Anyway, Donna realized there was a lot more to the universe before even finding the Doctor back. Things were big and important, and Donna got that. She wanted to be a part of it.

She offered unconditional friendship to the Doctor - something he desperately needs now. She even sacrificed her own life in order to right a timeline.

Here's something I like about Martha that I don't see often mentioned (maybe because fandom thinks it's a bad thing? Well I don't, so there): I love her snark. It's often over-shadowed by Donna's awesomeness here. But Martha can definitely hold her own when it comes to trading sharp barbs and quick quips.

And if there's one thing I love in a TV character, it's the ability to make smart, snappy combacks.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
One snarky moment I do love with Martha is the one from the picture in the post - when she's saying the bones of the hand to Joan. It's such a "bitch, please" moment. :D

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the screencap was what made me think of it. And it's such a brilliant 'bitch, plz' moment too. She's clever enough to hold her own against nurses and Time Lords and anything else that might be thrown her way.

I also think I like the way Cornell writes her better than just about any other staff writer.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she'd be up for anything that life throws at her now. Not much will compare to holding the key to blow up Earth.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*SMOOOOOOOOOCH*

With Martha there wasn't so much a change in character, as her own realization of her worth. She was always strong and smart and capable. She didn't need to grow into that, but rather just needed to discover it in herself.

*nods*

My new theory on Martha is that being with the Doctor taught her to be a little bit selfish. And I mean selfish as a GOOD thing - kind of like how RTD uses it to describe Rose. I think what we see from Martha in S3 is someone who feels like she always has to take care of other people - first her family, then the Doctor, and then her family again at the end. But I think the person we see at the end of LotTL and in TW and S4 is someone who has a stronger understanding of herself, and someone who isn't afraid to go after what she wants. Tom being the best example, I think, but I also love the way she sticks with UNIT even after the Doctor gives her a hard time about it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point. People wanted her to do different things - making comments or outright telling her (the Doctor and Francine being the two biggest culprits) - but by the end of S3 she's realized that she has to stand up to whoever and say what she's going to do in life.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-06 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Your point about Martha not being selfish enough made me immediately think of in Turn Left where she dies because she gave the last thing of oxygen to Oliver.

I forgot about that moment! (Probably because it was only mentioned in passing instead of shown.)

Ooh, yes. And wah. That totally made me sniffle.

I love Rose! (I'd probably adore the other two, but wandered off a bit before they showed up.) Still, Rose is great. My only quibble is [livejournal.com profile] mrv3000. I mean, REALLY, what's up with her?

*waits for deletion*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I could screen this comment and make people wonder what was said and who said it. Of course, then I should have some sort of cyrptic message. But that would require energy.

Not in the least! Dinos are always memorable. And who wants to forget SG-31? WHO!?

!!! Michelle! I'm gonna go visit Hya in March! *does happy dance of joy*

Awww yay!!

I like Rose, BUT...

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
... I wanted to make you twitch! :D

*Smooch*

The three of them are all completely, utterly awesome. And they totally need to spend more time together swapping stories/tips for saving the world/brands of bog-proof mascara.

Also, I NEED AN ICON WITH ALL THREE OF THEM! I DON'T HAVE ONE. THIS WILL NOT DO. I'm actually going to have to look for one, aren't I?

Re: I like Rose, BUT...

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there any point during JE where they're all in the same shot together on the TARDIS, and it's primarily the three of them? If not, I'd check the Confidential.

Re: I like Rose, BUT...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
*DELETES*

I would have LOVED to have seen the three of them sitting around swapping stories and completely freaking the Doctor out by not letting him in the room. "WHATEVER ANYONE SAYS, IT'S NOT TRUE!" :D
ext_18985: (amused)

Bwaha... girls freak him out, y'know.

[identity profile] aj.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, the girls should have totally thrown a yellow flag on the whole global apocalypse thing and gone off for a tea break and to have a quick catch-up and information distribution. If just to watch The Doctor have a complete and utter panic melt-down. With Jack, Ianto, and Mickey pointing and laughing at him the whole time.

Re: Bwaha... girls freak him out, y'know.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It would have been EPIC.

So late in posting this but I can't pimp this womans Who fan art enough. This TARDIS girls works for your comment above but she does loads more Ten and companions and even some Classic Who. Sadly she doesn't seem to have it organised anyplace so you just have to scroll back through her lj entries. Also, check out TW Babiez because it is the cutest thing since your alt!verse picspams.

[identity profile] alexiscartwheel.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL Cause anyone would believe you'd suddenly start in on a litany of Rose's flaws! :P

It is sad that they didn't have much screen time together in Journey's End, isn't it? The three of them together just makes for epic awesome!

Yet one more reason I wish that JE was 2 hours long.

[identity profile] the-lucky-stars.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I love all three, BUT... nah, there's no but. Couldn't think of one if I tried. :D

Hee!

Another great thing about Martha is her loyalty. To her family, to her friends, to her ideals. How lucky for the Doctor that he had some one like Martha, who'd still be their for him even when he was being a doofus. She'll do anything to protect the people she cares about from harm, and is basically all around awesome.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* She most definitely isn't a flighty person. And she is very loyal to people once she gets to know them. Like how she was with Jack. I actually think she and Rose would have become fantastic friends had they wound up in the same universe.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
One common element of awesome between all three women is their ability to rise above the negative aspects of their family relationships to move on to better themselves, even with each of them being at a different stage in their lives.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Fantastic point! That's absolutely something all three have in common.

[identity profile] theyellow-daisy.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
This post makes me want to go have a Who marathon.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
:) Always a good thing!

[identity profile] joyfulfeather.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I mostly now want to squish hug all of them. *SQUISHES* They are all awesome and wonderful and they made the Doctor's life BETTER in so many ways just by being there and being them.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*nodnodnod*

It's really sad that he seems to be in a current mindset of it not being worth it since he's got a loner mentality again. Yes there will often be heartache, but aren't you better off for having known them all, Doctor?

[identity profile] joyfulfeather.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Exactly! If it's really not worth loving (any kind of love) because you'll lose people, then no one ever should love. Humans lose people too, and yet we put it out there over and over again. I guess it gets old after 900 years, but... that means lots of happy memories, too!
ext_18106: (Romana ftw)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE THEM ALL. I'm just saddened they don't have their own spin-off where they continue to be awesome and save the world occasionally. (and I only have a Romana icon, unfortunately)

Re: Bwaha... girls freak him out, y'know.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
No kidding! And they could occasionally be joined by their mothers, because there is NO force in nature that could match up to Jackie, Francine and Sylvia.

[identity profile] honorh.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I do adore them all.

Rose, as [livejournal.com profile] butterfly pointed out, had the male romantic hero's arc. She's the one who defied the gods to get back to the one she loved. If she were a man, no one would rip on her for this. She knew what she wanted, and she made it happen--and saved the universe along the way.

It's surprising how much more I liked Martha when she came back in S4. I just hadn't connected with her that much in S3, but when she came back, it was like, wow, this girl's got it going on! Freema said she outgrew the Doctor after S3, but I don't agree. I think she outgrew her need for approval. The Doctor was a huge symbol of that because of her unrequited love for him. She finally realized she didn't need him to love her back and went after her own life. When she comes back, she's all the stronger, and you can see the positive effects not just in her relationship with the Doctor and her engagement to Tom, but in her new closeness with her mother.

Donna, like Rose, knew what she wanted and how she wanted to live, and she went for it. I am so impressed by that. So many women who get past their mid-thirties without realizing their dreams give up. Donna didn't take that route. She made her life better and was a true friend to the Doctor when he needed one most. I think my favorite Donna moment is near the end of "Midnight" when she sees the look on the Doctor's face, and without even a word steps forward and envelops him in a much-needed hug. They had the best of times, the two of them, and he'll carry her with him forever.

*Sigh* I'm all misty now. I love character love!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 04:30 am (UTC)(link)

*nods* Rose really did have that classic hero mytharc. That whole journey myth was hers.

It's surprising how much more I liked Martha when she came back in S4. I just hadn't connected with her that much in S3, but when she came back, it was like, wow, this girl's got it going on!

This is me exactly. I really do blame the arc she was saddled with in S3. Once she got to shed that, I really grew to love the character.

Freema said she outgrew the Doctor after S3, but I don't agree. I think she outgrew her need for approval. The Doctor was a huge symbol of that because of her unrequited love for him. Totally agree. The Doctor isn't some sort of childhood playmate you outgrow. *aims a shotgun at the Peter Pan analogy* Like you said - it was her need for approval she outgrew, which included the Doctor's approval.

Donna, like Rose, knew what she wanted and how she wanted to live, and she went for it. I am so impressed by that. So many women who get past their mid-thirties without realizing their dreams give up. Donna didn't take that route.

And not only was she trying to find the Doctor back, she was getting involved investigating strange happenings. She really was becoming her own brand of awesome. It's just a shame she never believed it about herself.

I think my favorite Donna moment is near the end of "Midnight" when she sees the look on the Doctor's face, and without even a word steps forward and envelops him in a much-needed hug. They had the best of times, the two of them, and he'll carry her with him forever.

Donna was so good at reading him and being there for him as a friend.

OK, I think the moment I jumped up and went "Martha is AWESOME!" is in The Shakespeare Code when she throws out "Expeliarmus!" I loved her so much in that moment ;)

HA! That was cute. :D
