Love Actually
Am turning off my comments right now because I am so very tired. Too much beer last night. (Okay, only two glasses. I'm such a light-weight.) zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
But I did see Love Actually last night.
What a charming movie! The style of all the different stories totally worked for me. My favorite by far was the story about the kid and his stepfather. Thought it had the most poignant, truest moments in addition to being funny and sweet.
The story about the newlyweds and the best friend was very interesting and acted/played very well. So much so that I didn't mind the red herring they threw in about the friend possibly being gay early on.
The aging rock star was hysterical! And it was nice to see something in there that was love but not romantic love.
The storyline about the stand-ins for the porn actors was funny! The idea that these two people who were in those various, uh, positions were actually shy with each other, cracked me up. But are porn films really that nice? And take that long to shoot? I have no clue since I've never seen one - I just always think of porm films as very sleezy and low-budget.
Really liked the idea of choices when it came to love in the storyline about the woman with the mentally disturbed brother.
Adored the storyline with Colin Firth. Just loved the scene of the two of them saying just about the same things but not understanding each other! :)
The married couple with the husband having an affair was heartbreaking. Alan Rickman's and Emma Thompson's characters were so three-dimensional. Just great!
There were only two parts that really fell flat for me. One was the scene with the President hitting on the woman. Now you might think that I'm being all sensitive about it being the U.S. President. Believe me, I'm not. I just don't care for over-the-top bad guys. To me he practically could have walked in, announced that his name was Joe Evil and mwahahahed for a while. He was just that blatantly slimy. Which is odd because I think that Billy Bob Thornton (no matter what you think of him personally) is an acting genius. The rest of that storyline was very cute though and Hugh Grant was adorable. Lots of laugh out loud moments with that one!
The other part was the storyline about the guy traveling to the States to get women. It really had me going 'huh'?? Instantly picking up 4 women and then coming back with 2 was just so out there for me. Jojo informed me that this guy is famous. And so it makes sense if you know of him or something.
Okay, there were actually three things - I just refuse to believe that Hugh Grant is older than Emma Thompson. ;)
But overall, fantastically acted and written. Just a great little film with a lot of heart.
And right now studio executives are probably planning a re-make using an all-American cast. *urge to kill rising*
