There's an unpopular fandom meme going around, but I can't really think of anything at the moment. Instead I'm going to point at and mock this post:
http://community.livejournal.com/startrek/978680.html
It seems to happen in every single fandom that has older versions of something new: the hard-core fan who doesn't want other kinds of fans (usually new fans) to exsist (like, anywhere) because "THIS FANDOM IS MINE MINE MINE AND YOU CAN'T BE ON THE INTERNET BECAUSE YOU'RE DESTROYING THE PURITY OF THIS SHOW/MOVIE/BOOK/COMIC!!!! *STOMP STOMP STOMP*" Mwah.

By the way, if someone is trying to be all More Old School Than You, it would be better not to do it with an animated GIF of a character from TNG who was forcibly grafted onto DS9. I'm just saying.

Complete with a cane-shake and turning on the hose. :D

I also kind of lolled about how fandom_wank has jumped on this one as OMG OLD SCHOOL FANBOYS ARE IDIOTS, yet when it comes to Doctor Who...

Yes, but BRITISH old school fanboys are always right, or didn't you know that? XP

What do they think HAPPENS to a fandom if new people never join in?

I think I just got stupider reading all that.
Having said that... why do people not realise that fangirling isn't a zero-sum game? It's not like I have an allotment of, like, 10 Fandom Points™ and if I spend them all on staring at David Tennant's crotch (handy visual aid provided in icon) I won't have any left over to talk about whether or not Gallifrey had a harsh climate given its residents' ultra-resilient biology, and what the evidence in the BFAs is for this theory. I can do both! At the same time even! The human brain (especially the female brain, ackshully) is really good at multitasking. Especially when staring at David Tennant's crotch really just requires my lizard brain and not much else.

:D
And your point system is cracking me up! "Oh sorry. I can't discuss any hair-related topics right now. I've used my points this week." :D

She can't be serious XD I've been a TOS fan for some time now and we can certainly fangirl with the best of them. Has she only ever hung out on the "male side" of old school fandom?
cause they've always struck me as a bit boringno subject

Ah, gotta love fans who want it all enshrined in amber and it can only be done their way and how they think it's appropriate and any deviation an opportunity for scorn and mockery. Oh, and the "I've been in fandom longer than you game" -- I remember getting that played at me at a con where two women sneered at me because I was a "newbie," making tacky comments behind my back while we stood in line deliberately loud enough so I could hear. (I was wearing a TNG uniform at the time - and was then skinny enough to look good in it.)
Finally, I had enough and turned around. "How long have you been watching the show?"
They looked surprised at being confronted but said, "Longer than you."
"How long? Just the year."
"Since the early 70s when it was first in syndication -- but that's still longer than –"
"September 1966. Mantrap. Wrote letters to NBC when we were trying to save the show. Whadda ya think of that, newbie?"
That shut them up for about five minutes -- wouldn't have pulled the fandom age card, but they were Just. So. Annoying.
However, all of you are lovely, lovely people and have made me laugh. I love having clever and witty folks in my fandoms, no matter how long they've been watching.

They lost me in lolz right here. Seriously?
Whether it's Who or Trek, old school fans wouldn't have new material to watch if it weren't for the new fanbase! I was bored and needed entertainment - thanks for providing ;)
