I'm going to need to post some cuteness soon to make up for all this non-D/R.

I live in California, right? (Answer: yes.) So why is it that all they have at the grocery store are expensive, hard, tasteless fruit? IN SUMMER.

Never mind the expense, it's getting so that you have to grow your own food just to have something that passes as food. (If I ever win the lottery that I don't play, I'm getting a house with fruit trees! And a vegetable garden! And a cow! Okay, not the cow.)

Goodness. Which grocery store do you go to?

I just went over to Ralphs today. BLEH.

I'm from KS, and even food we get in stores... that's a rarity! Tomatoes we get are gross tho. My gran grows them so much better!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, tomatoes are the worst. They're always so tasteless.

Seriously. I won't eat a store-bought tomato anymore unless it's under duress.

*looks at tomato plants in the garden* HURRY, YOU GUYS! HURRYYYYYYY!

Florida, believe it or not, has the same problem. I think CA and FL end up exporting all of their good produce to other states.

Well, except for artichokes. The best ones are still in Cali.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That's probably true. And they probably don't make any distinction between in state and out of state harvesting, and pick everything completely green for shipping.

[identity profile] intrikate88.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's because your state ships everything elsewhere, leaving you with nothing. I live in the Peach State and all our peaches come from California. Go figure.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I would KILL for some good peaches! *sniffs*

Do you happen to have any farmer's markets near you? Not sure if they're as popular down where you are as they are up here. But they tend to have fab fruit options.

[identity profile] roxyk630.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
OH! I can second this! They have one here every Saturday, they have the best produce on the planet, and for rather cheap prices.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmmmmmm. I'll have to find out.

(Also, I think you should grow fruit trees for me and ship down the fruit. I think this is a GREAT plan. :D)

OH! I think you and Opal need to go to the giant mall in Canada. Isn't there some kind of giant mall in Canada?

*Taunts you with delicious California fruit* Yummmm.

That said, the blueberries from my mom's backyard are about a zillion times better than store blueberries. :)

Farmer's markets! There must be one somewhere near you.

But other than that, I usually get good (though expensive, since it's shipped in from CA ten months out of the year) produce at Whole Foods. I got two pounds of amazing organic strawberries from CA there yesterday for $5. YUM.

Look at all the stuff on the East Coast!

I don't have a Whole Foods near me, but there is a non-chain market in town. I'll try there.

I second the farmer's market idea.

When I lived in Idaho, the stores didn't carry Idaho potatoes. The potatoes came from Oregon. WTF was that? The produce was also crap and most certainly not grown locally and yet, I knew that farmers were growing stuff - so I went to the farmers market. OMG, the food. Wonderful.

When I lived in North County, if you wanted kick ass strawberries, you didn't get them in the store. You went to the stands. There was this one out in Vista near my high school. yummy
