Never thought I'd actually *recommend* Torchwood!

[livejournal.com profile] grav_ity brought up the fact that Torchwood's latest is playing sort of like a movie for TV. And I agree. The production value for this mini-series has been stepped up a notch from past episodes.

If you've never watched Torchwood, I think you'd have no problem starting with the multi-part "Children of Earth" that started last night. There's not a whole lot of backstory that isn't explained or that you couldn't catch on to in this first part. Torchwood is an organization that deals with aliens. And is the worst kept secret in Cardiff. (Heh.) Jack, Ianto and Gwen are all humans, but Jack can't ever die due to something that happened on Doctor Who years ago. You don't really need to know how this all happened, just that it's something unique about Jack.

I'm not trying to win converts to Torchwood. It's just that I know how summer TV is, and if you want something good to watch that's in the X-Files vein, you might want to give this mini-series a try.

Four out of four Weevils recommend it.

Ha!

I'm finding myself similarly bemused at the fact that Torchwood is something I'm actually looking forward to watching tonight. Up is down! Black is white! What's going on? As I said to [livejournal.com profile] _thirty2flavors: This is what happens when the people who normally make Doctor Who make Torchwood. And there is a lesson in here for us all, methinks!

I know!! Where are the Cyberwomen in bikinis? And horrible lines?

It might be too soon to say this, but it looks like RTD brought his A game to this.

Yeah, all I've ever shown Ken was the pilot and he was able to follow Torchwood fine last night (well, as well as I could -- we both got confused occasionally. I just had to keep reassuring him that, no, I didn't know who the people onscreen were either, aside from Gwen/Jack/Ianto). It was vastly less embarrassing than Torchwood has previously been, and I'm really looking forward to the next episode.

I think I'd actually introduce a person to this now, instead of the older stuff. Then if they like it enough have them watch past eps.

And yeah. There were some slightly confusing moments for me as well, but I'm sure it'll all become clear over the rest of the episodes.

One of the things I like about RTD's whoVerse is that people aren't stupid. They are starting to put pieces together and starting to believe...and the fact that they all know about Torchwood in that sort of way, is just great.

Plus I can't help thinking of a comedy sketch I saw once where "Jack" walked up to the crime scene tape and said "We're Torchwood. These are my shiny teeth!"

Totally. In spite of the man's love of crack and sparkles, he writes characters extremely well. Even how random characters react in a situation.

I love that sketch!! :D

That's what I thought, too! It's like a five hour movie split into parts.

I feel kind of bad because I've only seen parts and the finale of season 2. Should I go back and rewatch S1?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say only go back if you really want more of the characters. Cracky, cheesy and full of bad dialog, but, you know, it's Torchwood. :D There are good episodes mixed in with pretty bad episodes in S1.

My favorites in S1 are "They Keep Killing Suzie" and "Captain Jack Harkness." "End of Days" is a fun series finale though. And watch Countrycide only if you've got a strong stomach. :D

*NODS* Like you, I think that people who gave up on Torchwood will be surprised. :)

It's certainly the best Torchwood to date, and I would definitely recommend this mini series even if not the rest of the show.

*nods* I totally agree.
