It's a good thing I'm not watching this in real time, and that S2 should be coming in my mailbox tomorrow. If I had to wait months for a new season, I probably would have wandered off and not come back. Well, the instant watching and the knowledge that Ted and Robin don't stay together.

The last third or so of the show really bugged me quite a lot. I started actively disliking Ted, to the point of it affecting me liking the show. (Wanting to bitchslap Ted every time he appears on screen can't be good.) If the writers meant for Ted's persistence to be romantic, it failed with me. I found it creepy and was thinking Robin should be getting a restraining order. Instead, it worked on her (I still have no idea why Robin is attracted to Ted) and they wound up together.

And then they separated Marshall and Lily! Hmph.

Yeah, I probably would have given up on this show if I'd watched it when it aired.

I was vaguely traumatised by Marshall and Lily's separation. *CLINGS TO THEM*

And I'm part way through s2 and looking forward to Ted and Robin breaking up!

OH GOD, IT LASTS??

THEY SORT THINGS OUT EVENTUALLY. I WOULD HAVE HURT FRANCES IF THEY HADN'T.

AND YES, YES IT DOES. IT LASTS FAR TOO LONG.

STOP TRYING TO MAKE TED/ROBIN HAPPEN. IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO MAKE TED/ROBIN HAPPEN? *SHUDDERS*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
WOE. I'll probably have to fast forward through parts of it. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE BREAKUP.

[identity profile] misssara11.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Douchey-Ted will grow on you and will be mocked by the other cast. Just stick with it. Things will get really good. Make it to "Slap Bet" (episode 9 of season 2) before you make a full choice.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2009-09-22 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that sounds about right. I think it was mid-season 2 or so that the show stopped being "something to do bcause it's summer and I'm bored" and started being something I legitimately enjoyed outside of a time waster. And seasons 3 and 4 are just great.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
*waits*

At least right now it's really distracting for when I'm on the treadmill. I'm making frowny faces at Ted and before I know it, 20 minutes has gone by. :D

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2009-09-22 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I had heard it was OMG THE BEST COMEDY EVER (whcih is probably similar to the reviews you've had), so I was kind of incredulous at first. The only thing that kept me watching past the first episode or so was that I found Barney quite funny, albeit pretty standard sitcom material. Somewhere around season 2 I started legitimately enjoying mostly every character, and the show gets more clever as it goes along. Plus they start making use of their interesting narrative set-up to do some interesting things.

But it does take a season or so to find its footing.

Have you seen college Ted yet? College Ted is my favourite, omfg.

I'll take your word for it.

I don't think I have. I've only seen S1 yet, and I don't remember College Ted.

Omfg College Ted is my favourite Ted.

I dunno, recently I decided I kind of like Ted because I don't think I'm neccessarily supposed to like Ted. In later seasons, at least, the show seems to embrace and mock his doucheiness, and I think that makes it okay.

[identity profile] logicisfailing.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, the murder house! I actually didn't care for that episode as a whole but that part was hilarious.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm planning on watching at least through S2. (And if the slapping happens to Ted, I'm all for it! :D)

[identity profile] noblealice.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Please stick with it, in the third season, the writers seem to not only realize that Ted is a douche, but celebrate it! Also, in the second season, you get more pretentious!CollegeTed who is HILARIOUS.

I find that if you don't view Ted as a romantic lead, but rather watch to mock him, then the show is much better. (Besides, all his friends are awesome! And the second season has the Slap Bet!)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I really really like everyone but Ted. And maybe I do need to just sit back and mock him. It's like...at this point I hate seeing him happy. And that's weird. :D

[identity profile] okelay.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, ted's pretty annoying. I don't like T/R, it's boring. the same with Leonard/Penny, writers push it but it's lame. ted and robin together and poor barney on his own make s2 my least favourite.
don't worry, they break up. eventually and marshall and lily get back together and it's all good. and then you get to s3 and it's awesome and fun and everything.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like I just have to stick with it for a while.

I only drop in and out of the show while my husband watches reruns, but I've always liked Marshall and Lily. I never saw them broken up, and thought they were a good portrayal of a couple that was happy, but not boring.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that about them too. :)

[identity profile] joyfulfeather.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I've just started getting into this show, too, and everything you're saying is the reason I'm tempted to not go back and watch the early seasons. I love the dynamic in what I've seen of the more recent stuff. The clips I've seen from season 1 make me cringe. Who is that girl who looks like Robin? She doesn't act like her...

On the other hand, I may use it to sew during, like you're using it when you exercise. Distraction/background noise. Hmm.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hopefully one day I'll be able to look back on S1...and then run away. There have been some funny moments, but the whole Ted/Robin thing is like this giant cloud over the show.

[identity profile] skippity-doo.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ted doesn't piss me off completely, but he's not very interesting and whiny and annoying.

Season Two was really what drew me in - I'd seen a few eps of season 1 before Top Gear but wasn't hooked at all. Plus, like others have already said, SLAP BET :-D

Marshall and Lily's wedding is quite lovely. :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I just didn't like him at first, but the last part of S1 made me rage just a bit.

And I'll stick through S2 at least.

Marshall and Lily's wedding is quite lovely. :)

Awwww!

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
*pets*

Marshall and Lily don't stay broken up very long, if it helps. XD

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Good. And Ted and Robin split up soon? *wibbles*

(Damn. I keep writing "Ten.")

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Er. They're slightly less annoying once they're together? OH! And it's revealed like two seasons later that Lily actively anti-ships them and helped break them up, which CRACKS ME UP SO MUCH because I kind of think of Lily as the audience's POV when it comes to the relationships. XD

If you really can't stand it, though, you could just... skip S2. The end of S3 is when the Barney/Robin subplot starts happening, which has sort of become the romantic focus of the show. Not to give it away or anything.

BWAH!! I love that!!

Well, I already have all three disks being shipped to me today, so I'll watch. But I might fast forward the Ted parts. :D

I think this is one of those occasions where the fic will out. No one likes Ted terribly much.

But... HIMYM! My show! My fandom! For a brief, wonderful year. Then I ran away screaming because of the baby fic.

I can see why.

BWAH!! Lots of it, I take it?

Since both Alyson Hannigan and Colbie Smulders are pregnant through S4, it seems to have hit people hard. Even though the characters aren't.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh boy.

[identity profile] logicisfailing.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Ted's never been my favorite either. Which is weird, because before I started watching regulary, and just caught an episode or two, I remember being sad when Ted/Robin split up. What was I thinking??

You're doing better than me. I watched what I could find online of S1-2 (most of it, but a few gaps were there. Some of the Marshall/Lily breakup, etc). I watched S3 online (less missing 'cause it was more recent I guess) and started watching "live" with S4. I don't know exactly when, but I somehow came to really love HIMYM. I especially liked Arrivederci, Fiero (S2), Spoiler Alert (S3), Sandcastles in the Sand (S3), Benefits (S4), etc.

Would you mind if I friend you, btw? I come here by way of Opal's journal sometimes and your posts are always interesting/amusing/something I totally agree with/etc. We have Doctor Who, Stargate SG1, HIMYM, Chuck, The Middleman in common. Of those I ship Doctor/Rose, Jack/Sam & Daniel/Vala, Barney/Robin, Chuck/Sarah, and sort of Wendy/The Middleman (I just love those two, as a romantic relationship, friendship, whatever).

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)

That's what I keep hearing from people. So I guess I'll stick with it. :D

Don't mind at all!

My loathing for Ted is why I quit watching way back when! Ugh. He makes me reach for the Haterade. I am thinking of picking the show back up, but just skipping forward to the latter part of s2.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
*NODS* I generally don't stick with shows when they make me cranky for whatever reason. But since I've been told Ted gets better, I'm willing to stick this out for a while.
