Some babble after seeing the new Doctor Who logo, and talk of other spoilery S5 things.

Here's the new logo:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/medialibrary/images/misc/logos/new_logo_1440.jpg

I've been thinking about this, and the new logo really doesn't surprise me. In fact, it completely fits the vibe I've been getting from other small things, like the redesign of the TARDIS exterior and interior - making it all retro. Also the insistence of renaming S5 as S1. Even introducing the character of Amy by putting her in a hoochie skirt to bring back the "lads and dads" aspect of the show.

This really is going to be a reboot of the show...that was a reboot of the show. Ignoring the fact that most reboots happen decades after the fact, the strong vibe I've been getting for S5/S1 is that this reboot isn't trying to give us something new. It's trying to rely heavily on the past by going retro.

I'm sure this will excite many fans of the classic series, but to me, it doesn't thrill me. I like classic Who. I've watched about 60% - 70% of the old episodes and I have a fondness for all of it. But I guess I've been liking that New Who is new. It always paid homage to the old, but never actually tried to go back.

I wouldn't say that that something as small as a new logo would completely turn me off to the new series. It's just the more I keep seeing, the less interested I'm becoming.

And now there's a new logo? *spits out coffee*

Man, this is all getting to much for me. I need to disappear into fandom as a way to distract myself. Um... I could immerse myself more into Canadian politics? Yes...? No?

Also, good luck, Moffat, if we revert back to a more Classic Who kind of show. I'm sure I will enjoy many naps in my future.

It's not too bad as logos go...

I like classic Who as well, it was the reason I started watching the new series but the reason I love the new series is basically the same as yours: Homage to the old, but never actually trying to go back.

I'm willing to watch it before I judge it (even with that skirt)

I remain mystified by the band-aid skirts, although I have developed a series of theories to explain them.

Calling it Series 1 still makes no sense. If it's harkening back so much to classic, why not go ahead and call it series 32 or whatever?

However, I remain determinedly excited and hopeful. It's a curse.

I don't mind the words part of the logo -- I mean it's boring, but the orangey triangle diamond thing isn't that thrilling or beautiful either -- but lol the TARDIS/DW thing is laaame.

I have to say you're pretty much on the money. Moffat is pretty much erasing the last 5 years from canon as publicly as he can without outright saying it. And while yes, there are quite a few people who have demanded this from day one? I would not be surprised if there are just as many who are going to find this incredibly hard to swallow. Each new announcement or comment has made me miss the last 5 years more and more. *shrug*

I don't like the new logo, it's too...square xDD

I know I shouldn't mind the IDEA of a new logo, and this...I can't decide if it's '...okaaaay' or 'DIE IN A FIRE.' You're right, it's very old school, which is very Moffat but I'm like you, while I kind of like Old Who, the show I love is New Who. And sure that was going with RTD anyway since they went with the Moff, but the more he goes about erasing the show I love the more certain I am about my decision not to watch it.

Like you said RTD Who never erased Old School Who, paid a decent amount of homage to it, and it was decades later; Moffat seems to think he can erase the last five years from Who History which is just bizarre when so many people have loved RTD's era with the show.

Ok now I am starting to cling to my Ten action figure.

The logo is pretty sad.

I'm gonna quote Michael Kors for Amy's outfit: "slutty, slutty, slutty." And it's not as if we haven't seen a policwoman on an RTD show. Gwen's uniform was appropriate. Perhaps not sexy in the I'm gonna flash you if I move too fast way but at least it looked like she could get the job done without embarrassing herself. I'm surprised Moffat didn't put Amy in 5" heels although maybe he did and she couldn't run? Still, I see Amy's skirt and think Brittany Spears during her meltdown or maybe Paris Hilton? That's just not good.

I wouldn't say that that something as small as a new logo would completely turn me off to the new series. It's just the more I keep seeing, the less interested I'm becoming.

Oh, I knew I didn't want anything to do with it :)

So, I hate it. No surprise there.

I'm so sad because I can't bring myself to care about this show anymore. :(

They're actually calling it S1? This is odd. The only other time they called it that was after a LONG hiatus. This is silly. However, I kind of love the retro logo. It reminds me of seeing re-runs of episodes with the Fourth Doctor when I was three or so. But yes, I like the new-ness of the old-new series. (Oh my word, Doctor Who, only you could make writing a description with time-related adjectives so complicated).

Also, the prof in my Roman class was describing how she thought Caligula was actually insane, and she told us that he had a "pounding in his head that drove him, well, mad." I thought of the Master. That is all.

Also the insistence of renaming S5 as S1.

WHA???????

Argh. I now have much more sympathy for the Classic Who fans who were upset that Nine's season was "Series 1" and not series ... umpteen-five, or whatever it should have been.

I don't know. I've watched shows as fannish homework before; eventually I gave up. I'm still going to at least give the first episode a shot if only because I want to see how they handle the transition and Amy's intro, but beyond that the likelihood of my watching it dwindles drastically.

I liked that RTD clearly respected the old series but also tried to do his own thing, his own show. Moffat seems eager to just go back to the way things were, not trying to think of a show for now, today, and I don't think that's wçhat I want to see.
but the idea of not watching DW is rather terrifying. I'd have to get a new primary fandom and that's not easy to do. or I'd have to get an actual life which is just boring.
or can I stay and complain about everything. they all sound like a lot of fun.

:( I want cookies. moffat is traumatising me.
