Why? Why?

I've commented this elsewhere, and also been discussing this via email, so I've gotta just say this.

Hunting down actors/PTB to talk about your fanfic is like a cat bringing a dead bird to a person.

Cat: LOOK AT THIS AMAZING THING I'M BRINGING TO YOU. AREN'T YOU PLEASED?

Person: JAYSUS. H. HORSERADISH.

Not that I want to compare fanfic to a dead bird, but it is very very special to the cat (and other cats) and extremely horrifying to everyone else.

(And possibly special to a passing dog.)

XD Exactly!

AUGH. No. NO, there are some things one just doesn't DO. I don't care if the actor in question loves fanfic or not. AUGH.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
EXACTLY.

I'm getting squeamish even though I don't know the fandom, actor or person involved. It's that bad.

Unfortunately it's Doctor Who and David Tennant. AGAIN.

Oh, even better, I've found out who the person is, and she really is completely round the bend. Just who the fandom needs representing them.

I felt bad for the person who got picked on by The Friday Night Project even though I don't like her because they had to go and find her stuff to rag on. This person? Leave the man ALONE.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes yes yes. (And I heard who the person is too. Le sigh.)

The thing that kind of shocks me, is the complete misunderstanding of our position in the hierarchy. In that we have no position. We are not even underlings. We are the faceless masses. They do not care about our creative pursuits - and talking to them about it as though it even approaches the same level of interest to them, is just... mind boggling.

Tennant made a joke recently about loving us all in very special ways as individuals. And the reason that comment was so funny was because of the perfect irony. Fans become a blob. And to try to stand out as the extra special fan who has something super duper to share with them, that they will think is really great is always, always, always going to land as weird.

(Disclaimer - yes, I do think they are grateful for our existence, in that fans make the show successful, and creating our own stuff is a great compliment, but beyond that...)

Hunting down actors/PTB to talk about your fanfic is like a cat bringing a dead bird to a person.

BAD FAN. TPB look the other way with fanfic, in most cases, because while it's copyright infringement, it keeps fans happy and for the most part is harmless.

Contacting DT/TPB and showing them fanfic is kind of like going up to a photographer and showing him/her how badly you mutilated their original with your manip. Not good.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)

Some fic writer called into a show David Tennant was on, and started talking about her fic.

Personally I haven't actually listened to it because I'm sure I'd burst into flames if I actually did.

Yeeeeah....no. Fandom (especially fandom with fairly supportive producers*) can be such a echo chamber that, "Production Person A doesn't laugh at fans" turns into "DT would *totally* love to see my epic Tencest fic!"

I remember one person who's blog I used to read who had a humbling exercise about it to the effect of; "Say, 'I write fanfiction about X out loud. Go say it in front of the mirror. Can you do that? Now can you call up your mother and tell her about it? No? Okay, remember that."

I don't think I would tell my mother I write fanfic. I sure as heck wouldn't tell someone I didn't even know.

* Not literal Producers. Just everyone involved in the production.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's a great test. It should be part of Fandom 101.

[identity profile] bluewingedpixie.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
WHAT?!

And here I thought Big Bang fandom was batshit for stalking TPTB via Twitter.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You've gotta love fandom.

[identity profile] poohmusings.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, Michelle, I would die -- DIE! -- at the mere thought of possibly doing that. As a matter of fact, a part of me is dying knowing there are people who do do that.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. I didn't listen to the show, but others have who are dying, and I'm dying second-handly.

[identity profile] orelle-peredhil.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Euuuuuuuuuuuuuurgh. I remember crawling into a hole when watching that Friday Night Project segment - "Doctor Who... porn????????" - and I don't even write fic. This - this is just beyond the pale. I mean, REALLY. especially considering the content of the fic. In what universe does that sound like a remotely good idea? *headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk* And it's sad that there's really no way for the rest of fandom to separate ourselves from the nutjobs - we can't exactly call poor DT up and go "Most of us aren't like that, I promise........" *headdesk*

I mean, REALLY. For shame.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
