mrv3000: made by elismor (DW - Nine/Rose You & Me)

Countdown to Christmas

I've decided to picspam my favorite Rose-era DW episodes. With a week left until Christmas, think of it as a mini-advent calendar. Or something.

Also to note: "favorite" is such a subjective word, and this isn't necessarily eps I think are the best written or deserve awards - just favorites.

I don't do angst (and the emotional manipulation that usually goes with it), but this is such a lovely episode. It goes straight to the heart of the characters.

The Doctor has enormous powers. Wouldn't you be tempted to do something with that? The dynamic is interesting - Rose wants something but feels somewhat weird about asking for it. The Doctor can see giant warning flags ahead, but he does it anyway.

I wonder if Rose ever told Jackie she was at her wedding. Side note: given how very plain Jackie's wedding was, I could see her going overboard in the altverse if Rose and the Doctor get married. Giant white and pink puffballs, swans, 20 bridesmaids (that Rose doesn't even know) - and the Doctor makes things explode of annoyance. :D

It's hard facing reality when you've got a fantasy built up.

PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY HANDS.

Nothing like breaking bending the laws of time, eh Doctor? This was a clue way back of his willingness to do things he wouldn't have before the Time War - if something was important to him, he was already starting to screw the rules. I suppose WoM shouldn't have been such a huge surprise, but it still was.

After watching WoM, "I know what I'm doing" now seems like a bit of bluster. I'm not trying to let Rose off the hook here - she massively screwed up and learned a huge lesson from all of it - but looking back on this now, it seems clearer that the Doctor had a bit of "Time Lord Victorious" attitude back then.

The major fight. Man, it was an ugly one. They're both stubborn people, and can be quite childish about things.

THE DOCTOR AND JACKIE WILL NEVER NOT BE FUNNY. NEVER. Part of why I love the altverse? Lots of Doctor-Jackie interaction. MWAH.

Awww. Here we get the Doctor's somewhat wistful line about never having a life to share with someone. TenII ends up getting that life and Ten...goes crazy. Something to think about. *nods*

The Doctor with baby!Rose cracks me up. Not often you tell a baby not to destroy the universe. :D

OH, JUST MAKE UP AND HUG ALREADY.

Thank you. :)

Aaaaand they quickly go back to their normal state of being, which includes Rose fishing around in his jacket, and the Doctor being VERY INTERESTED IN THE ROSE-TOUCHING.

One of the few times we saw Nine without his jacket.

When the Doctor goes poof, we find out that he was trying to change history for her. (Pay no attention to the differences between "fixed points" vs. time travelers changing their own history, because... Just don't.) Also, while Pete is somewhat of a flake, he turns out to be quite noble in the end.

Shot thrown in because it is pretty.

Another pretty shot. I love this one.

This ending always gets me. There's so much caring from the Doctor right there, and he's not really the caring type.

I hope you're happy that it took me a good five seconds to work out where the leave-a-comment button is with your new layout! XD

Also, awwwww. *Pets them both* I do love this episode even if I find it mildly traumatising to watch!

And for some reason, nearly-naked-Nine (ie: without the jacket) is not nearly as traumatising as nearly-naked-Ten (t shirt only, although I don't mind the shirtsleeves look).

You mean the one right at the bottom of the entry? XD

*nods* It's just that good that it still makes my favorite list in spite of the sad.

Well, he's showing far less skin. The Doctor should always be full clothed with lots and lots of layers. This is a good rule of thumb for any incarnation.

I STILL FIND YOUR NEW LAYOUT BEWILDERING AND DIFFICULT TO COMPREHEND.

Although I am mildly jealous. I totally need someone with awesome skills to make mine look pretty! XD

This is true. I do not approve of it when the show tries to shatter my delusions that the Doctor's clothes can actually come off sometimes.

OMG, THIS IS MY FAVOURITE EPISODE WITH NINE <3 And probably favourite episode ever when it comes to plot, I just love the plot and the relationship SFM, a man with "no second chances" is willing to forgive her just after one Sorry *awww* and yet another case of how much The Doctor is ready do for Rose, love, love, love <3

The Doctor with baby!Rose cracks me up. Not often you tell a baby not to destroy the universe. :D

There's so much to this episode, and so much insight into the developing relationship between them. :)

Oh, you're right! This was the first hug, wasn't it? *thinks*

Yeah, I also have a soft spot for time-loops episodes, I never used to watch sci-fi before DW (I prefered fantasy/mystic) and it reminded me a bit of Charmed(I used ti be a huuge fan a few years ago), I guess, so that was another reason for particular fondness towards this ep XD

*snickers*

heh, yup, he's so *not* doing domestic XDD

Oh, you're right! This was the first hug, wasn't it?
Yup, that was actually the biggest if shallowest reason why I fell for this ep so much, I was, like, "WHOOO HUGGING, ASFGFGFFDJ" XD Years later I leant about the hug in "Dalek" but it was cut out of the ep so oficially this one is still first *holds close to chest* I think it was a very good place for it <33

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-12-17 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't know about the Dalek hug until much later either. But I marathoned the first series over a weekend, so sometimes it runs together.

In that case, yeah, in my case, I was watching it on TV for the first time and it took 2,5 weeks so I had time to process it all up, still, when I rewatched season One two years later it was almost like the first time :D

I love Ten much but this is my most favorite episode of all the New Who. I'd seen this more than 20 times. Maybe because it hits too close to home, family-wise. I very much understand where Rose is coming from.

But the story of Pete and how easily he understood and accepted grown Rose and the time travel; and Jackie, talking about Pete and his things when she's had a drink; and the Doctor who cannot say no to Rose.

And there are two lines in that episode that gets me everytime: "I'm your Dad. It is my job for it to be my fault." and "... I never had a life like that."

*sniff* Thanks for posting these screencaps. They are indeed beautiful.

There are a lot of genuine emotions in this episode. Paul Cornell did a FANTASTIC job of writing it.

That line makes me sob. *sniffs*

And glad you like it. :)

And I'm also quite fascinated with how they're both soooo familiar with each other that she just went on and fished his TARDIS key from his coat pocket, while the Doctor's right hand is still over her shoulder.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-12-17 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally! There's a comfort level there, that's for sure.

This episode is in my top 5, I think, I do love it. Aww.

BWAHAHAHA!

I like that you've managed to find foreshadowing for WoM all the way back in Father's Day.

Rose fishing around in his jacket, and the Doctor being VERY INTERESTED IN THE ROSE-TOUCHING.

Awwww! For some reason that VERY INTERESTED YET SLIGHTLY BEMUSED AT ROSE TOUCHING look seems like such a Nine thing to me. Don't know why. Like a cat who is slightly suspicious that you put a milk bowl down in front of him because you might snatch it away at any moment.

TOTALLY. With Nine it was "Mine?" and Ten it was "MINE."

I think “Father’s Day” is my favorite episode of Doctor Who.

This was a clue way back of his willingness to do things he wouldn’t have before the Time War—if something was important to him, he was already starting to screw the rules.

I actually see this episode as being where it really hit the Doctor, how alone he was. When he tells Rose, “There used to be laws stopping this kind of thing from happening—my people would have stopped this”—no matter how much he hated it, I think he was used to having that safety net. The look in his eyes, when it finally sank in that it was gone…

(And it’s after this—and especially after his regeneration—that I think he stopped being the Doctor and became the Last of the Time Lords.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I see that more around "Dalek." He was sounding defeated (shock and mourning still with him), but he did still say "I win." Not much conviction behind it - I think he was in too much pain about it yet (plus he had Rose there to support him.)

Kind of makes me wonder if he'd gone off the deep end fairly quickly if he'd never met Rose.
