This and that.

  • I have to admit I only half watched Chuck and 24 last night while playing on my laptop, so...I don't really have anything to comment on.

  • New Lost tonight! I am so ready for this show to be done, although I'm predicting a BSG-type ending where I facepalm a lot.

  • Related, I know it's next to impossible to actually plan TV shows out (too many unknowns about being renewed and so on), but wouldn't it be nice to watch a show like Lost that has a spelled-out time frame? "This show has a beginning, middle and an end, and will happen over 4 seasons. Period." (I refuse to believe BSG was like this since I'm pretty sure Ron-baby was making shit up as he went along.)

  • Oh, DW fandom. I know you loathe Rose, but making her a rapist? (If you don't know what I'm talking about, you're better off. Really. Really really.)

Although I have to say I'm not really as shocked as Otter, here. I wish I were shocked that fandom (any fandom) is capable of this, but I'm not.

  • Related, I know that it's the thing to cry "I can say/type/think whatever I want!" And that's true. But freedom of speech does not mean that people aren't allowed to react negatively to it.

But freedom of speech does not mean that people aren't allowed to react negatively to it.

That's the part a lot of the Free-Floating Psychosis branch of fandom seems to forget, that their right to post their sh*t is accompanied by everyone else's right to criticize them for spewing it.

When even the venomously Rose-hating posters at an anon meme are going 'Um, NO,' that should be a solid indicator for anyone that they're straight off their rocker.

WHAAAAAAAAAT?????? Yes, that's rhetorical, because I believe you on the "better off not knowing" thing. Sheesh.

I think there's this sort of warped mindset that can be out there, about freedom of speech equaling getting to be inside some kind of protected bubble. That's...not what that means.

Yeah, that's pretty telling.

Like [livejournal.com profile] principia_coh mentioned above, even people who don't like Rose were calling it batshit.

On the show-with-a-plan front, watch the first four seasons of Babylon 5 and the plot-arc episodes of the fifth season if you don't mind the obvious budget cuts.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard before that that's a good show. Maybe I'll have to add it to my summer viewing.
ext_5608: (uh-huh)

Honestly, having seen that it was an anon-meme thing, I ceased to even be curious. Anon memes are like the concentrated distillation of the craziest crazy in any given fandom. When it's not just plain trolling, which I'm convinced a fair chunk of it must be.

I normally don't go within a mile of it, but it's made the rounds on the flist now. You know how that goes.

And yeah. Anon memes generally are the depths of insanity in fandom. :D

Edit: Although I have to add that this time the people on the anon meme were the ones calling the whole thing batshit. Then you know you've hit crazytown.

I really wish this happened more often. But ending a show before people are sick of it is blasphemy on American Television. It's part of the reason I stopped watching Lost and BSG. You get to a point where you're all, "Okay, the writers clearly don't know where this is going, why should I care about what they pulled out of a hat before filming?"

Awwww.....shocked Otter is adorable. You'd think I'd been in fandoms long enough that this sort of fic wouldn't surprise me. But....just....the level of tastelessness and OOC is staggering. Just...what? I mean, what?

[identity profile] brilliantomega.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
On point three: Babylon 5 was fully written before it aired - and it was awesome. :D

[identity profile] fiona-conn.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The above is pretty much why I stopped getting involved in bigger fandoms. The DW, Trek and Potter fandoms are full of folks who pull the freedom of speech card when they get called on their epileptic trees, while simultaneously denying others that same right.

Smaller fandoms tend to have nicer folks, for some reason. Possibly because they're so obscure that everyone in the fandom is friends with each other anyway. (I refer here to Ghostbusters or Blues Brothers as examples.)

:)

The showrunner wrote the book for the entire planned 5-year run of the show before they filmed even the pilot.

The issue they ran into in season 5 is that they had been told they weren't being renewed by their syndicator, so they had had to take the plot arcs for four and five and jam them into the fourth season - and they then got offered a pickup by TNT after they'd already put the fourth season in the can. The fifth season is a few episodes of series wrapup, plus a few episodes of what was supposed to be the fifth season's B arc, lovingly cushioned with all of what were meant to be the filler episodes for both seasons 4 and 5. Add to that a severe drop in budget, and the fifth season was not as good as the previous years, save the major series arc episodes into which most of the budget was poured.

At first I loathed the UK's style of structuring TV shows. I mean, half the episodes? Or less? I'm getting ripped off! But generally they've got a better sense of beginning-middle-end than US productions. They could take a lesson.

Don't forget the people agreeing with it. Wow. *pats Otter*

That sounds wonderful! I'm really going to have to try this this summer.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I would imagine this mindset would carry over into other aspects, politics being a big one. Shoot, half of America gets all "HOW DARE YOU NOT LIKE MY OPINIONS!!!" when it comes to political debate.

But anyway, there probably are more "here be dragons" places in large fandoms than in small, just as a rule of percentages.

Yes! We need to combine the two! Twenty episode seasons with beginning-middle-and ends! It would be glorious!

....As long as ABCBSNBCFOX doesn't yank it after two episodes.

Don't forget the people agreeing with it. Wow. *pats Otter*

I was trying to block that part out. I made the mistake of reading the fanfiction.net comments, too. *goes for aspirin and daily otter links*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's still amazing to me that it was plotted out! Shame it got mucked up like that.

The whole thing is a giant ball of crazy.

You know, much as the Brit way of going "Wow, we've done two whole series of 8 episodes, that is SO MANY! Time to move on to other things!" cracks me up, I think on whole it leads to better written and more tightly held together productions. When you have 8 episodes a season, it's a lot harder to waste time in the middle with pointless filler eps.

[identity profile] 04nbod.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
not just rape, torture and abuse until alt!martha saves the day and everyone incuding her mother and father turn against rose. LMAO. That is all I can do LMAO.

It's very cute. (As long as you're not attached to the character in any way.)

I think I agree. I've watched quite a bit of UK shows now, and generally they seem to be better plotted out.

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
THIIIIIS.

And this is why, even though I loved Life and dearly wished it had gotten more attention when it was on, I am actually glad it ended when and how it did. The writers got enough advanced notice to write a finale that wrapped up several plot strands, so it does wind up feeling like a cohesive story.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's times like this that I wonder why even bother attaching character names when it bears absolutely no resemblance to the show.

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the pacing of UK shows that has spoiled me. The first series of Being Human fleshed out 3 main characters and gave them all major story arcs, all in 6 episodes. No filler, no padding, just plot and character from start to finish.
