This and that.

  • I have to admit I only half watched Chuck and 24 last night while playing on my laptop, so...I don't really have anything to comment on.

  • New Lost tonight! I am so ready for this show to be done, although I'm predicting a BSG-type ending where I facepalm a lot.

  • Related, I know it's next to impossible to actually plan TV shows out (too many unknowns about being renewed and so on), but wouldn't it be nice to watch a show like Lost that has a spelled-out time frame? "This show has a beginning, middle and an end, and will happen over 4 seasons. Period." (I refuse to believe BSG was like this since I'm pretty sure Ron-baby was making shit up as he went along.)

  • Oh, DW fandom. I know you loathe Rose, but making her a rapist? (If you don't know what I'm talking about, you're better off. Really. Really really.)

Although I have to say I'm not really as shocked as Otter, here. I wish I were shocked that fandom (any fandom) is capable of this, but I'm not.

  • Related, I know that it's the thing to cry "I can say/type/think whatever I want!" And that's true. But freedom of speech does not mean that people aren't allowed to react negatively to it.

But freedom of speech does not mean that people aren't allowed to react negatively to it.

That's the part a lot of the Free-Floating Psychosis branch of fandom seems to forget, that their right to post their sh*t is accompanied by everyone else's right to criticize them for spewing it.

When even the venomously Rose-hating posters at an anon meme are going 'Um, NO,' that should be a solid indicator for anyone that they're straight off their rocker.

I think there's this sort of warped mindset that can be out there, about freedom of speech equaling getting to be inside some kind of protected bubble. That's...not what that means.

When even the venomously Rose-hating posters at an anon meme are going 'Um, NO,' that should be a solid indicator for anyone that they're straight off their rocker.

Yeah, that's pretty telling.

[identity profile] magali29.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have a link to that anon meme? I don't even know what a anon meme is! But anyway, if even Rose hating posters are just "no, no, no", then I want to see it with my own eyes.

WHAAAAAAAAAT?????? Yes, that's rhetorical, because I believe you on the "better off not knowing" thing. Sheesh.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Like [livejournal.com profile] principia_coh mentioned above, even people who don't like Rose were calling it batshit.

On the show-with-a-plan front, watch the first four seasons of Babylon 5 and the plot-arc episodes of the fifth season if you don't mind the obvious budget cuts.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard before that that's a good show. Maybe I'll have to add it to my summer viewing.

well that was because they had been told that they would be cancelled by season four, so they wrapped everything up, only to find they'd been greenlit for another season.

I really wish this happened more often. But ending a show before people are sick of it is blasphemy on American Television. It's part of the reason I stopped watching Lost and BSG. You get to a point where you're all, "Okay, the writers clearly don't know where this is going, why should I care about what they pulled out of a hat before filming?"

Awwww.....shocked Otter is adorable. You'd think I'd been in fandoms long enough that this sort of fic wouldn't surprise me. But....just....the level of tastelessness and OOC is staggering. Just...what? I mean, what?

At first I loathed the UK's style of structuring TV shows. I mean, half the episodes? Or less? I'm getting ripped off! But generally they've got a better sense of beginning-middle-end than US productions. They could take a lesson.

Don't forget the people agreeing with it. Wow. *pats Otter*

That sounds wonderful! I'm really going to have to try this this summer.

[identity profile] fiona-conn.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The above is pretty much why I stopped getting involved in bigger fandoms. The DW, Trek and Potter fandoms are full of folks who pull the freedom of speech card when they get called on their epileptic trees, while simultaneously denying others that same right.

Smaller fandoms tend to have nicer folks, for some reason. Possibly because they're so obscure that everyone in the fandom is friends with each other anyway. (I refer here to Ghostbusters or Blues Brothers as examples.)

:)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I would imagine this mindset would carry over into other aspects, politics being a big one. Shoot, half of America gets all "HOW DARE YOU NOT LIKE MY OPINIONS!!!" when it comes to political debate.

But anyway, there probably are more "here be dragons" places in large fandoms than in small, just as a rule of percentages.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, much as the Brit way of going "Wow, we've done two whole series of 8 episodes, that is SO MANY! Time to move on to other things!" cracks me up, I think on whole it leads to better written and more tightly held together productions. When you have 8 episodes a season, it's a lot harder to waste time in the middle with pointless filler eps.

It's very cute. (As long as you're not attached to the character in any way.)

I think I agree. I've watched quite a bit of UK shows now, and generally they seem to be better plotted out.

Also, freedom of speech... doesn't apply on the internet. If tomorrow LJ decides to ban posts that use the word "mushrooms" THEY CAN DO THAT. I mean, sure, they wouldn't and we could protest/leave/whatever, but LJ made it quite clear in the whole strikethrough mess that sometimes they ban shit without thinking because of the content.

I don't know how I manage to come across these fics when all I am looking for is nice, hot, sexy romantic Doctor/Rose fic. Unfortunately I read a story like that a couple of weeks ago. It was so ridiculous I had to laugh. Heartless rapist Rose has her wicked way with the poor defenseless Doctor. He was quite the Damsel in Distress in that one.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I know the standard reaction is "don't discriminate against my kink!" Which just is...yeah.

[identity profile] magali29.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I think that anyone involved in the making of Doctor Who, from Davies to Tennant, from the hairdresser to Steven Moffat, would be horrified that something fun like Doctor Who could be destroyed by a fan writing such stories. It's really a proof of how low some fans can get and really, it's not pretty.

Please tell me that we aren't the only one disgusted. You mentioned that even some Rose haters were apalled? Where can I read that? So that my faith in humanity can be restored.

Honor H - if you want to read... that (not calling it a DW fic, sorry, it's not one!), you can co to Teaspoon. It's in the most recent uploaded fics, so it should be on page 6, 7 or 8 today. You can't missed the horribilis (as would say the Queen) summary, about Ten II being abused, tortured and raped by Rose during 6 months, post JE and how alternate nurse Martha healed him.

Yep, no kidding, that's the summary. Good luck with reading that. Try not to eat before or during reading.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's times like this I'm glad that showrunners and actors mostly ignore online fandom.

[identity profile] bluebell1916.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Found it, read it, and yes it was bad. To say this fic is completely out of character for both the Doctor and Rose is an understatement. I am now going to erase this story from my mind by going off and reading some quality Doctor/Rose fic.
