About half way through The Half Blood Prince and have a few thoughts.
- CHEST MONSTER!! XD XD I'm snickering every time it comes up.
- I've now read the infamous bird scene between Ron and Hermione. They're obviously not the perfect couple at the moment, but I don't think it necessarily dooms them to a life of cop calls for domestic disturbances. (Not that I'm now waving the Ron/Hermione ship flag since I'm still not caring that much about any of the ships.)
- Thought it was a bit interesting that at first both Harry and Tom thought their respective dads were totally awesome (without actually knowing), but turns out they weren't. They both didn't even seem to consider that their mothers could be powerful. Huh.
- I now see what people mean when they complain that Ginny went from zero to awesome in 3 seconds, but...I'm really not having a problem attributing it to Harry's POV. Harry often needs to be bashed with the obvious stick before he notices something, which means there's a lot of stuff (especially the more subtle character stuff) that goes missing. It's sometimes a bit frustrating, but... Eh. I'm fine with it for the most part.
- The Tom Riddle stuff is only mildly interesting to me. I'm way more interested in Harry's parents & co.
- McGonagall rules all.

Harry is just such a moron that sometimes not ever the obvious stick is enough.
I was thrilled when the birds made it into the movie, because I really did like that scene a lot. I am a fan of casual magic and how Hermione rocks it, and then it was funny!

She really did it perfectly, I think. :D

True.

Was it in there? I really need to watch that movie again. I swear it took me forever to remember if I'd actually watched it or not, but too much is familiar in the book for me not to have seen it. I don't really remember much about it though.

And I mean, really, the trio are massively cliquey -- there are like, what, 40 kids in each year at Hogwarts, and by sixth year Harry and Co are STILL meeting new people? lirl

There had been mentions of it before, and I probably only noticed because I was looking for it. Like Fred or George saying something like "holy crap, Ginny can do awesome things!" a couple of books back.

YES! I swear there was someone in Gryffindor even that Harry was like "who the hell??" XD

or maybe that's because we took turns reading the book aloud at four am while we were buzzed on alcohol?
I DON'T CARE I LOVE THIS BOOK.
Also? Hardcore Ron/Hermione shipper here. ;)

Heh, Harry does need to be hit with a stick, and often, to see things. I can believe that Ginny was being quietly awesome while he wasn't looking.

And that's really my personal canon - Harry's first impression was of a shy kid, simply because she had a crush on him at the time and clammed up. Then she became normal. Then she became OMG AWESOME when he finally noticed her in that way. XD

And I NEVER got the big deal about the bird scene. They were birds. It's not like she fired a rain of bullets from an AK-47 at him. Geez. When I was that age, I totally would punch my guy friends in the shoulders when I was mad at them like "omg! How could you do that?!". Lol. Teenagers. Anyway, I don't think it's a big deal. They're both very immature at this point.
True Harry Potter Confession: I don't care for the Marauders. I think the Sirius and James are both huge jerks. Yeah. I know they fought on the side of good and were brave and awesome, but that doesn't mean that they weren't also pricks. Blegh.

*nods* I think I might be even more fine with it since I don't really feel the need to invest in her character? Or their relationship?

Okay, now I'm picturing Hermione with an automatic. It's both a frightning and awesome thing. XD

Oh, it seems like they were complete douchebags, at least in the little I've seen yet. :D I'm very curious to see how/if that evolves.

I blame any issues on Harry's POV.
"Oh when did Ginny become AWESOME!!!"
She already was, silly. You just didn't notice cause you didn't really hang out with her (or Neville & Luna) unless there was tension with Hermione and Ron.
"Tonks is in love with Lupin?!?! I thought she was just upset about Sirius's death like me"
You poor boy. You really don't understand human interaction.
"But my Dad and Sirius were AWESOME, how DARE you say otherwise"
Sweetheart, people were telling you good memories of your parents. Not about your dad and friends being douches and your mom not being able to stand them.
"Dumbledore knows EVERYTHING and is NEVER wrong"
I'm sure Dumbledore wishes he's never wrong (I doubt he would wish to know everything though). Dumbledore will be the first to tell you this and he wants to protect you and your classmates for as long as he can.
In conclusion, I blame the Dursley's piss poor raising and him not having any friends for most of his life as why he doesn't pick up social cues let alone try to pay attention to how people are interacting. Also him being a young male might attribute to this as well.
I almost want to reread the books and make a list of all the things that Harry gets wrong, Wrong, WRONG.
I'm sure the amount is staggering.

Though I imagine a fair bit of it would involve phrases like "Harry's busy wallowing in self-pity. Again."
