Finished The Half Blood Prince. Overall it was the dullest book for me. (Although I did laugh out loud one or two times. Luna moments, I think.)

Harry was obsessed with Draco; I don't care about Draco. There was backstory about Tom Riddle; I didn't find it overly interesting. There was lots of relationship dwama; I was only entertained for so long, amused at how stuff related to ship wars, but after a bit I didn't really care much.

And...there really wasn't a whole lot else to the book. :D

I love Luna, her and Neville in the last two books were the highlight of the books for me.

Wait until DH, there's chapter upon chapter of absolutely nothing.

Oy boy.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
lol. Whatever! Haters to the left! I love DH. I feel like the camping scenes get exaggerated. I really don't think that they take up THAT much of the book.

[identity profile] muneca-brava.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. The camping isn't the best part of the series, sure, but I don't mind it. I like that they don't immediatly know what to do and figure everything out.

So much this. Did you ever enjoy camping before? You won't after DH.

Longest Camping Trip Ever.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I'm not a huge fan of HBP either just because I feel like it lacks the overall narrative focus of the other books. It's kind of just like they're wandering around with Harry find out stuff about Voldemort and occasionally wondering to the Half Blood Prince is, but with not point to it. But I do love the end.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. There didn't seem to be any overall aim or goal like in other books, other than to see all the memories of Tom, which...eh.

[identity profile] muneca-brava.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not my favourite either. Mostly it's just there to set up a lot of things for the last one.

And I like DH as well, and don't really mind the camping at all.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I figured there was a lot of that going on. :D

Oh, HBP! I totally cried in front of a bus load of Norwegian tourists who were just trying to enjoy a nice dinner by the pool. ;)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwwwwwwwww! I remember when the book came out and seeing loads of people who were upset.

It's also the only HP book I didn't read straight through. I had to put it down twice and NEARLY DIED.

Anyway, I enjoyed it quite a bit, and I also kind of loved the movie, even though the Half Blood Prince part was kind of, uh, removed. Mostly I loved Draco in the film, which for me was intense because it was the first and only time I really connected to what his problems were. I just...loved the scene where he and the Death Eaters stalked out of Hogwarts, and looked like he belonged.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I really need to watch that one again. I barely remember anything about it.

The scene with the wands at the end just KILLS me.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-07-29 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL Poor HBP, so many people hate it. I really liked it, but then I really like pretty much everything related to Harry Potter so idk.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I definitely don't ~hate it. I love Tom Riddle's backstory, and I love everything from the cave scene to the end. I just love it less than other books because it feels so unfocused.

But I also kind of love it for the complete and total fandom meltdown that it inspired. Some of the most epic shipping wank I have ever witnessed.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
:D Sorry to say, I did find it dull. It was the only book where I had the very very strong urge to skim.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-07-29 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
HBP was also the one that came out at the height of my HP-fan-ness. I mean I'd been reading the series since before GOF, but it was after OOTP that I really started reading and writing a lot of fic, so HBP was a BIG DEAL!!! and I remember anxiously waiting a week for my copy to arrive and everything. At that point she probably would've had to try really hard to disappoint me.

[identity profile] claidissa.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
HBP was the worst book for me. So much relationship drama that no one cares about and JK isn't very good at writing about. I did quite enjoy the HBP movie, though. Probably because they had to add actual plot.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I remembered things from the movie since I knew what was coming in the book, but for the life of me I can't picture anything! Really need to rewatch it.

[identity profile] elirrina.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hermione was originally my favorite character, but I think Luna has won, as a result of her amazing randomness. I love her quidditch commentary, whichever book has that.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that commentary was one of the things that made me laugh. :D

[identity profile] leighleighla.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously, you weren't drunk enough for this book.

May I recommend some hard cider for DH? Cause those camping scenes...man you are gonna need it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
MEEP!

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL HBP

It was the first book I read after being in fandom and I like... dressed up and went out with my friends and read it in one night.

And then spent the next week being really angry and butthurt and crying over the word "delusional."

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
AWWWW! *does not chuckle*

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO, it's the worst of the six BY FAR. It read to me like JKRowling twiddled her thumbs and then woke up one morning and realized OH!SHIT!I HAVE A DEADLINE! and scrambled to put it together. Even as a major Harry/Hermione fan, I enjoyed most of book 7, so it wasn't that bias. I just thought that HBP was crap.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
BWAH! Yeah, it just didn't seem as well structured as the others.

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
OotP and HBP were my least favourites. It was like... I was really fannish while waiting for OotP and then it came out and I drifted away from fandom. I still read HPB and DH on the release date, of course.

DH actually reminded me a lot of what it is that made me love the series, so I am rather fond of it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping I'll like it better. I'd hate to end on a "meh" note when the rest has been pretty entertaining.

Well, my two favorite characters in the Harry Potter series have always been Harry and Dumbledore, so “Dumbledore gives Harry private lessons” probably would’ve been enough to make me love Half-Blood Prince all by itself.

Totally! I think they had more together time than all the other books combined!

The backstory was a bit of a letdown, though. Tom Riddle was always evil? Really? He crossed the Moral Event Horizon before his twelfth birthday? When I find myself thinking things like, “At least Anakin Skywalker had a character arc,” I know there’s a problem.

Yeah, it gave us new details, but nothing huge (apart from the Horcruxes.)

Plus, the scene with the Trio after Dumbledore’s funeral…

“You said to us once before,” said Hermione quietly, “that there was time to turn back if we wanted to. We’ve had time, haven’t we?”

“We’re with you whatever happens.”

I think that’s still my favorite scene in the series.

Oh, whoops! Looks like I commented to the wrong comment. That's what I get for responding from gmail. :D

yeah-next to Chamber Of Secrets it was kind of flat-the one time I think the movie was better.

Totally need to watch that again.

*ducks head out of hole* What does it say about me that this was my favorite book of the lot? I just really liked getting all of the background information on Snape and Voldemort, and loved to see her fleshing out a Slytherin character for a change, as up until that point they had all been completely cardboard, and I was like FINALLY one of them has some depth!

Of course, I've only read each book once, so my opinion on that is all based off a far distant memory!

And yeah - I'm gonna echo everyone else and tell you to brace yourself for the camping in Book 7. It's, uh...impressive... yeah, lets go with that.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-30 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
:D Well if you're interested in all that, the book would be fabulous. It's not that I thought it was wretched, just not interesting to me.

And so far I'm enjoying 7. Haven't gotten to any camping yet though... XD

Hehe! I find that it helps if you envision it as one giant music montage set to "I Need a Hero" :-D

And that's totally not what I was hoping they would do for the final movie. Nope. Not at all.
