An Academic Question

Thinking about the success of the DW audios, I was thinking about Nine and Ten audios. (Yes, please?) How would you feel about a new companion with Nine or Ten? The audios have created new characters to go with past Doctors, so...they might do the same with Nine and Ten? Maybe?

I thought about doing a poll, but there were too many variables I could think of. But so that you're not poll deprived:

[Poll #1633376]

Personally, I'm not sure I could accept (or have any interest in) a new companion. At least in the near future. I'd always be wanting someone I already know.

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think with Nine I basically couldn't accept it. In Rose he seems like he's basically come straight from the Time War with only a couple of stops (to... see the Titanic) and then obviously he regenerates.

With Ten, we've already seen him with a few random characters in the specials and in the books and stuff. I would find it easier to adapt, even to a long term companion. But I would get annoyed if there wasn't some acknowledgement of the emotional arc. Like, Martha seems to be the only significant companion in between TRB and PiC because or else he'd mention someone, and anyone after JE is going to have to deal with Crazy!Ten. So I think I'd prefer short-term companions to long-term ones, it's got to be said.

Wasn't there something where they were planning something pre-Rose? A comic or something? Maybe I'm thinking of fic. Hmmmm.

Good point. It's probably a whole lot easier to fit people in with Classic Doctors because...emotional arc? What emotional arc? :D

I always got the impression he had just regenerated in Rose, and that those stops (Titanic, etc) were from the time he left her walking off with Mickey to the moment later (from her POV) he came back. Could have been 100 years for him.

Not sure the doctor would speak about other companions necessarily. He usually doesn't. Though after Rose he seemed to be more inclined to. But if the companion was from a different planet, or not long term, or from a distant time-- he might not. He spoke to Martha and Donna about Rose (and Martha) but they were all from the time time and place.
I'll also take Crazy Ten and someone. I love CrazyTen:D

[identity profile] leighleighla.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they could do really cool things with Nine. There's literally a whole other story for Nine that we never saw, between the time that he left Rose and Mickey in the alley in "Rose" and the time he came back.

We don't know how long that was, and it would be really interesting if he had an entirely different companion during that time.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be a few seconds or it could have been years for him. We have no idea, do we?

Eh, a pretty hearty "dnw" for me on both counts tbh. I don't really do well with audio stories anyway -- I get distracted when I have audio but no visuals, I zone out, I hate audio books as well as audio plays -- so there's that, plus I would not take kindly to a random invented one-off companion.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I have enjoyed some, but it's easy for me to wander off as well. They have to be good otherwise I tend to play games on my computer and pretty soon I've lost track of the story.

And I wouldn't care for one-off companions in audio, just like I didn't really care for the one-off companions on the show.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
There are only a few specific windows during which they could squeeze in other sole companions for Nine or Ten, both of which were during periods when the Doctor wouldn't have been particularly inclined to pick up other company.

Could they invent new companions? Yes. Should they? I don't think it would be of much benefit unless it were overlapping with an existing companion, like the addition of Erimem to the Five & Peri stories. I believe people's primary interest would be in having new Doctor & Rose or Doctor & Donna stories. (No offense to the Martha fans, but there's continued to be such a glut of Martha product that I don't think she'd be a selling point.)

*nods* The canon really restricts sliding things in.

I didn't even think about adding a person to an existing companion situation. That could be interesting if done right. (Although amusing in the "and we never spoke of her/him again" sense. XD)

I keep bumping into the "What Would the Actors Like to Do?" problem. I just feel like besides DT, it would take some major pleading to get anyone back in for audios, for any number of reasons.

I think ideally, we would be looking at The Further Adventures of Ten II and Rose, because that's probably the biggest sandbox for Big Finish to play in. Unless they could somehow get Catherine Tate or Freema Ageyeman, because the places where they could stuff in a new companion feel pretty limited.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got this mental image of DT hounding BP, FA and CT to do it, leaving them long voice mails filled with "come onnnnnnnn!" XD

And I would not have a problem with The Further Adventures of Ten II and Rose. At all. :D

[identity profile] maypanic.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
They already have audios with Frazer Hines (Jamie) doing Patrick Troughton's voice. He does an amazing dead-on impression, even when he's having conversations with himself back and forth as the Doctor and Jamie. :P

So if they really can't convince Eccleston to come do audios, which would be AMAZING, the next best thing would be to find a voice actor who does a really good impression. Probably fandom would kersplode, though. Doesn't it always?

I'd love to hear some of Nine's missing adventures hinted at in Rose. Even better would be some missing adventures with Rose & Jack, since it's hinted they went places together we never saw. I really have no interest in the missing adventures of crazy!Ten, or of cramming in new companions we didn't see.

And now I'm picturing DT attempting Nine's voice, which would probably be very very very bad. XD

I'd much rather get missing adventures for missing companions. And more with Nine, Rose and Jack would be LOVE, as far as I'm concerned. :D

I selected "ducks" as the possible (group of) companion(s). The Doctor picked up some ducks for a while. Possibly alien ducks.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
An alien duck would be the best companion EVER. Even better than a penguin. *nods*

[identity profile] chloris67.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say that I'd have any objection to another companion with either of them but I'm not sure how it would work with their arcs. Both Nine and Ten were very closed off. Nine before he met Rose and Ten after he lost her and Martha and the Master and Donna and so on. (poor guy) Even though you could fit DECADES in between companions and episodes for Ten, I don't know if he would have had anyone long term other than the companions we saw.

However, I've not managed to listen to an audio yet so I don't think I'm the target audience. :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
They are pretty limited within their story arcs, aren't they? More than any previous Doctors. In some ways that's nice and in other ways...there are a lot less extras you can do.

[identity profile] mornea.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
My initial reaction was NO to another companion for Nine-- when would he or she fit in? But for Ten, yes, sure. But it would have to be a one off, I think, and take place after Journey's End. I"m sure he picks up temporary companions on his adventures, like Lady Christina.

But then I thought about it-- hmmm. We saw Nine dematerialize the TARDIS after Rose said 'no' to Travel, and then he came back "seconds later" and asked her again. What if, between the his departure and return, he'd had quite a few adventures and a number of companions? But none of them were quite what he was looking for, so he returned for the shop girl who took out an auton.

So I'd say 'yes' to both. And as I was thinking-- no reason Ten couldn't have had any number of companions-- after Donna said no to travelling with him in Runaway Bride, we see him meet up with Martha... but who said that was right away? He could have had years travelling with many people before he showed up at Martha's hospital. Same thing between Martha and Donna.

So there's a lot of potential here.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's probably possible to shoehorn new people in to either Nine or Ten. Doctor Who is nothing if not handwavy by nature. :D

So they could probably do those few seconds in "Rose" or between S2/S3 and S3/S4.

It could be interesting, but my preference would still be for Rose, Martha or Donna. Or all three! Wait. That doesn't work. Woe.

I don't think any others would fit with Nine, unless someone guest spotted with Rose and Jack between DD and BW, and that would be one crowded TARDIS.

I could see maybe someone between Donna The First and Martha, but he seemed to make it pretty clear to Donna there hadn't been anyone after Martha, and he refused to have anyone along after Donna.

But I'd be willing to bend that logic if it meant he could take Leyla along.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
There probably would have to be a lot of hand-wavey stuff if they ever did another companion. :D
