Hmm. I probably need some S5 icons.

Okay. So. There was that.

I picked up with this episode, having watched the first 2 way back when. It was...sort of bland. I'd already been thinking that the episode had a plastic-y feel to it (not sure if it was the writing, the acting or simply the sets), and then the mini-golf ball Daleks turned up. BWAH! I wanted to shoot one into a hole. Dodging a rotating windmill, of course. Sadly the new paint jobs didn't inspire fear in me. XD

I'm not quite sure what to think. I don't know if I'm being too hard on it because of some kind of "it will never be as good as the good old days!" mentality or not. I'm really not one that's demanding a return of the RTD-era. (I'm perfectly fine that he's off pedaling his crack (and Jack Harkness) in LA.) I guess if I'm hanging on in any way, it's that I'd like to be entertained just as much?

But the plot seemed pretty silly, even for DW. And I wasn't really buying the angsting of Eleven about it - seemed like it lacked some depth.

However, I still like Amy. (More than Eleven, really.) I just wish Karen would stop with the eye-widening thing that I think is supposed to be an expression other than surprise. It irks me for some reason.

Oh, and Winston was amusing. (Not rolling on the floor variety, but still a bit entertaining.)

For what it is worth this is arguably the worst episode in s5, lirl. (Well, I say "arguably" although I would actually argue for a different episode as THE WORST... but VOTD is right up there.) I think Opal is the only person in the world who liked it. It was also at this point that I was still digging Amy a lot more than Eleven, which ended up not lasting much longer lirl.

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I did a complete switcheroo of "Who do I like more, Amy or Eleven?" right around mid-season. Well, the answer to that question is alway "Rory!" but I started out really not liking Eleven much at all. That drastically changed by the end of the season, and it's not a spoiler to say that I'm pretty sure that wasn't an on-purpose characterisation choice. They just got better at writing him and Matt got better at playing him.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-14 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was really into Amy in the first... 4? 5? episodes, and sort of so-so on Eleven, and now I think Eleven is probably my favourite aspect of Moffat's Who (though Rory is right up there) and Amy is sort of just... there. It is a shame that apparently neither can live while the other survives because I would like to enjoy both halves (or... all thirds) of Team TARDIS equally.

Yeah, I agree. I remember being pleased enough with the beginning of s5 when it aired, but as I'm going through dwrewatch I'm realizing I don't really like the first few episodes other than Eleventh Hour.

*points up*

This. I mean. I loathe Daleks anyway, but OMG was the episode ridiculously bland.

It felt like a filler ep.

I think Opal is the only person in the world who liked it.

Oh Opal. XD

Is...that a good thing or a bad thing?

Not the only one, but even I admit it's bad. And pretty much the only reason I liked it is because I have a ridiculous weakness for WW2 stuff, even awful WW2 stuff. *shrug*

No, you're not being too hard on it: Victory of the Daleks really did suck. The season did not really get consistently good for me until Vincent and the Doctor.

Oh. This episode. I just... It was so fail.

I mean I loved S5 every bit as much as I loved S1 (for similar and different reasons), but this episode... No. Just... No.

That's the worst episode of the season. Watch Vincent and the Doctor and prepare to completely fall in love. :)

Also -- are they filming Torchwood in LA? WHERE? I WANT TO GO WATCH.

I've heard that episode is really good!

I actually liked that one, mostly because watching Eleven lose his shit over the Daleks was awesome and I got to read lots of Rose-angst into the whole saving the day with love thing.

But the rainbow Daleks? Yeah, that's just so SO wrong.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
It was bad. During Eleven's angry scene I kept thinking how CE or DT would have done it better. :-/

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
lol. This episooooode. It just like, makes no sense from any sort of perspective. First of all the way that the planes were fighting? That was a WW1 style, not WW2. But WW2 planes were used for dropping bombs, not fighting in the sky. (lol that I know that and that I care.)

But most important, how does the power of love diffuse a bomb? IDGI. He pretends that he's human so he becomes human? hoooooow?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. I mean, we got sparkly!Doctor saving the world through the power of positive thinking, but this was just...no. Sorry, but no. XD

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to echo probably everyone else and say that this was definitely the worst one of the series. I mean, I still liked it, because I have a weakness for WW2 stuff even if it's horrible, out-of-character, ahistorical WW2 stuff, but yeah. Not one of the best episodes, and could probably find itself in a top ten list of worst Who eps.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not one of Mark G's better works.

[identity profile] miiro.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep trying to forget that episode even exists. It was just too crack-ish. Like someone was on something when they filmed it. Even the actors went through the episode with a barely repressed expression of "You've got to be kidding me!"

Or, at least, that was my impression. Or maybe my expression throughout the whole thing.

Daleks are supposed to be scary. The Power Rangers Puff Girls look just didn't do it for me.

I have the new Christmas Special on my PVR but every time I go to watch it this episode makes me go... "Do I really want to?"

Wasn't a fan overly of RTD either, but his worst was at least better than this particular episode. I kept looking for the spork.

Okay, I'm done ranting.

I have to admit the best thing to come out of s5, other than maybe 11 who isn't doing a half bad job (he's no Paul McGann or David Tennant but...), is Rory. I love him so much words cannot express the love I have for his character.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It reminds me of that Eddie Izzard sketch where he's talking about how the ancient myth writers were on weed. XD

I saw my flist explode with Rory love, so I'll have to see how I like him. Haven't seen much of him yet.

Series 5 had more ups and downs that any other in NuWho. Although Eleven will never be one of my favorite Doctor's I do like the return to the style of "Brilliant in all areas of science and technology. Lacking in the knowledge of local cultures". That's what worked for many of the Classic Doctors. They just have to get some of the other writing up to par...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they were trying to return to the style of classic Who, but that really only works to a certain extent. Retro is just a gimmick without substance.

I feel I should really clarify and say I haven't actually rewatched since the first time and don't particularly care to. I just enjoyed it more than most of the others because it entertained me.

But I am still butthurt they got rid of MY DALEKS and replaced them with the iDaleks.
