Haven't seen the next part yet.

Maybe the second part goes downhill, but I liked this episode. I wouldn't say it deserves awards or anything, but I thought it was enjoyable. Unlike the Angels episodes, I felt the tension in this. The plot seems pretty much like a redo of "Doctor Who and the Silurians" with Three, but it still kept me interested enough.

Some nice bits about the Doctor in it like the last-of-his-kind stuff and mentioning missing Gallifrey. Also, I liked (in a strange way) that the Doctor screwed up for not paying attention to the little things - he shouldn't have let the kid go for his headphones.

And Nasreen! I think she might be my favorite guest character in S5 so far.

However I'm not a huge fan of the Silurians. In general, I mean. They were in only a few Classic eps, but it was enough.

I don't share Kali's hateboner for these episodes, but I did think part 2 went down hill after a fairly promising part 1. I think at the time I remember expressing shock and surprise that Chiball wrote something I did not hate. Though, I actually like "42" too so I don't know what I'm talking about, basically.

That's disappointing. But it seems like DW is full of two-parters that fall down in the second part.

I actually liked part two more than part one, but I could be unique in that , idk. This is one of the only episodes of DW that have ever managed to make me wander off in the middle of it. It really couldn't keep my attention.

I have to admit I'm sort of a captive audience when I watch these, being tied to the treadmill. :D

HDU!

No in reality I don't think it was until part 2 that my rage set in, at least, part 1 I just remember as criminally boring. Also, it came out in the confidential that they'd cut this like two minute scene where Amy and the Doctor talk about Rory and her wedding and their ~feelings and stuff, and knowing that there had actually been like TWO WHOLE MINUTES of stuff I care about and it was cut out in favour of like, boring plot exposition about drilling, just pissed me off.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's one thing I cannot stand about the abridged audio versions of the tie-in novels. Anything remotely character-related (i.e., interesting) gets chopped for the plot. BAH.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-23 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure there's a scene in part 2 where Rory talks about ~travelling and how wonderful it is that got chopped as well ugh ugh ugh. I don't think I can even blame Chibnall for that but I can at least maintain my level of disgust, lirl.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That really sucks.

[identity profile] mornea.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Sexist generalization alert (apologies in advance) : I think this is a guy thing. The women watching want to see the interpersonal relationship stuff. The guys (including the guys in charge) probably think drilling is more exciting.
I do not find drilling exciting.

I don't hate these episodes, exactly. I just find them horrifically boring.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
So far I haven't been bored yet. But there's always part 2.

I feel like the Doctor really messes stuff up in this one--he's more careless than usual. But that could be chalked up to him being less human than Ten and Nine. It still feels weird though, for him to mess up like that. However, it felt off to me. Not sure if it was in the first or second parts though... ^^; But yeah. Overall it was good.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
So far I've just seen him make a mistake about letting the kid go - which was a head-in-the-cloud mistake. He does seem way less grounded than Nine and Ten.

The Silurians sort of remind me of an average run-of-the-mill Star Trek alien race. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. Just a bit overdone, maybe?

I do like the idea that they have a justified claim to the planet.

Also, I kind of like that Amy is off somewhere else, and we get to see the Doctor and Rory work together for a change.

And I like the second part just as much as the first part. :) Maybe that makes me a minority, I don't know.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the Silurians are really nothing new, even if you ignore Classic Who.

And I might be in the minority too. I didn't really think the first part was boring.

[identity profile] mornea.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I had recently seen Doctor Who and the Silurians, and this one struck me as so very similar! Almost like the scriptwriter (I forget who at the moment) just took the old script and used it as a basis for the 'new' story.
Matt Smith did shine as the doctor in this episode. I like it when he's given the emotional stuff to do... I don't mean babbling over the top emotional, but when he's shown dealing with some pain from the doctors' past. He does it well.
I did like the kid in the episode, too. And having raised a dyslexic kid myself, I quite liked the encouragement given to such kids in this episode.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally similar! It's just updated. :D

And I do like the hints of deeper emotion in him.

Nasreen should be a companion. The kid's mom on the other hand--boy, did I ever dislike her. The Silurians aren't too bad, not my favorites, but not the worst by any stretch of the imagination.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-25 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Nasreen would make an awesome companion! :D
