So I've been reading/skimming/Kindleing lots of fic, and something I've seen confuses me. There seem to be a lot of fics that involve John using his cane. But...he stopped using it quickly after meeting Sherlock. (Was it the same day even? The next day?) I thought the point of the whole thing was that the excitement of Sherlock's life negated the need for it. We never see him using it again, right? So I'm scratching my head as to why it turns up in so many fics. Am I missing something?

I guess? Might be a woobie-ing of him, although it seems like fandom is more inclined to woobie Sherlock.

Maybe that's how they make all those babies.

NO BABIES. NO. BAD FRANCES.

BUT THAT IS WHAT I HAVE PICKED UP FROM YOUR EXPLORATIONS IN SHERLOCK FANDOM.

Sherlock and John have a lot of sex and then make babies out a ball of string.

That was a very funny fic. (Even though it wasn't string.) And at the end there were no babies. :D

THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE A CANE KINK?! In over a decade walking with one I've never met anyone with a cane kink. I'm uncertain whether to be relieved or disappointed.

While we don't see him use it again in series, it's basically implied that his psychosomatic limp is cured by adrenaline/distraction. So it's entirely plausible that if they went a stretch without case excitement, his need for the cane could return, just as his hand tremor returns when he's bored rather than when he's scared. Psychosomatic pain may originate in the mind rather than the body, but it still hurts and can still cause muscle weakness.

ACD's original Watson had migrating injuries and severity due to sloppy writing, they're just trying to give medical reason for the inconsistencies in the modern version.

As someone who sometimes needs a cane but not always (NOT PSYCHOSOMATIC THANKS EVER SO ARTHRITIS WORKS LIKE THAT) it makes total sense to me. However, I guarantee you will never find me chasing criminals down dark alleys nor jumping across rooftops.

Hmmm. That makes sense.

Well, at least when it gets boring Sherlock starts shooting random things, so John probably doesn't have to deal with a hand tremor very often. :D

You are the source of all knowledge, so here's another question. Most fics have Sherlock's parents (MUMMY) as being extremely rich. Upper class type stuff. Is that also from ACD? Or is it a fanon thing?

I AM THE SOURCE OF ALL KNOWLEDGE. MWAHAHA. THIS PLEASES ME. Well, you and my Grandmother agree on one thing. ;)

It has been years since I read the ACD stories, but if I recall correctly, we never actually learn anything about the Holmes family other than Mycroft. It's generally assumed he came from a well-to-do family due largely to the university education being less common then, but the assumption of unbearably posh seems to be fairly new fanon. Probably mostly from Benedict's accent and wardrobe.

YOU ARE! :D

And this is where I'm clueless when it comes to class-related accent and so on.

I'm good at making things up when I don't know.
Thinking on it, it's probably not just the accent and clothing (a middle class man does not swan about carelessly at crime scenes in a £1000 coat) but also the entitled attitude that both Sherlock and Mycroft naturally have. They act like men used to having *staff* at their beck and call all their lives. The difference of the haves and the have-nots is to be considered eccentric rather than just weird.

Also. Middle or lower class people do not give their sons names like Sherlock and Mycroft.
