Sort of like Switzerland, only not.

I can just tell that Irene Adler is going to be a wank source for the Sherlock fandom. Fandom might surprise me, but... You know how it goes. While I have certain expectations of how she'll be portrayed due to Moffatization (dear God, please don't let her say "sweetie"), I can't say that I'm preemptively hating her. Nor am I preemptively loving her to try and counteract any negative fannish sentiment.

I've been on both sides of the fence before. I've hated a character before they've made an appearance, but I've also decided to love and defend a character before they've made an appearance, just because of fandom shenanigans.

Sorry, I'm not doing either. The first option is just plain silly - I probably haven't done the blind hate thing for...10 years or so? The second option is just too much damn work. You get invested in waving a character's flag, and feel obligated to keep fangirling them even if they're not all that wonderful when they finally show up. (Because it's the principle, dammit!)

So I'll watch and then decide. And if my opinion happens to align with some fannish subset, so be it. Fandom politics? Meh.

I KNOW! DAMN THEM.

The little I know about Irene comes from the RDJ movie, which apparently has no basis in ACD canon reality. :D

Well, two bits are. The fact that Holmes keeps a picture of her, and the fact that she wears men's clothing occasionally. Frankly, Doyle didn't give people a lot to go on. I really recommend Goodnight, Mr. Holmes by Carole Nelson Douglas wherein Irene Adler gets her own sidekick and has awesome detective adventures.

This might not help you be neutral like Switzerland for the Sherlock version though, so..

:D I might have to check it out!

This. I'm just glad that I'm mostly out of the fandom politics involving Moffat now. Phew!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea how I got into another Moffat show!

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
There were no lead female characters.

And also for me, I ADORED "The Unquiet Dead" so much, and Mark Gattis wrote it.

Those are my excuses. :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think that helped quite a bit. The characters can be a douchey as can be, and I don't care as much because their interaction with women is minimal.

*loves Mark Gatiss*

::shrug:: I have no feelings one way or the other. I'm just looking forward to more cuddly jumpers.

I don't even watch Sherlock... first five minutes of ep 1 and I was like 'pass.' *Huggles her Basil of Baker Street, Wishbone!Sherlock, & RDJr!Sherlock*

But what I'm dreading is the inevitable amount of Irene wank on F!S coupled with the massive amounts of misogyny & gross wrong opinions that will automatically follow. From last year's bout of Sherlock secrets, the misogyny in those threads gross and I was just shaking my head going "WRONG. YOU'RE ALL WRONG. GO EDUCATE YOURSELVES PLEASE."

On the other hand, there's an upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie where my bbs RDJr & Jude Law will be together again and RDJr will be in drag and if there aren't more fantastic "THIS IS HOW THIS GUY GOT THE SHIT BEAT OUT OF HIM BY SHERLOCK HOLMES" scenes, I'll probably cry.

And sorry if I'm totally off-base here. Just know that we'll understand what ~feelings you may develop with series 2 of Sherlock, we'll be here to support you. Because we ALL get ~feelings from our fandoms. YANA.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really kind of glad I was oblivious to Sherlock last year if that's the case. Just give me the fic! :D

[identity profile] mylittlepwny.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! Is Irene actually showing up? Do we know who's playing her, or? I already know my dream casting of Billie will never come true in a million years but I WILL ADMIT CURIOSITY EVEN SO.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
She is and we do! It's...some actress I'd never heard of. :D Lara Pulver, apparently.

[identity profile] mylittlepwny.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
lolololol SHE PLAYED SOOKIE'S FAIRY WHATEVER ON TRUE BLOOD. The acting...was not spectacular. But you know. Here's hoping, I guess.

Oh dear.

[personal profile] captaintish 2011-08-31 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think people are going to hate her because of the possible relationship she could have with Sherlock.

It's probably all going to be moot -- she'll be in one episode and then we'll probably have to wait a couple more years for another "season." :(

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
It probably will be 2014 before we get S3! WOE. And I'm guessing Irene will only be in one episode and that's it? Doesn't she only appear in one Sherlock Holmes story?
captaintish: (Dr. Who -- Rory !?!)

[personal profile] captaintish 2011-08-31 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she was in one story -- it's one of the few I've actually read, because I planned to start Carole Nelson Douglas' Irene Adler series. It's still sitting on my bookshelf.

So we get three episodes and then we have to wait again? FAIL. I think Steven Moffat needs to choose -- Doctor Who or Sherlock. Maybe he could give DW back to RTD?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
That would be fine with me! :D Although RTD has said he doesn't want to do sci-fi again for a while.

I'm not in the fandom at all, and have barely watched the show, so I technically probably shouldn't have an opinion. But I really rather want her to NOT be 'shipped with Sherlock, just because it would be a different thing to do. there's no actual evidence in Doyle canon that they were lovers, and while I'm not bothered by most adaptations postulating that relationshp in one way or another, I just think it would be rather cool for the update to Not Go There.

This would, of course, make most of fandom go BERSERK. But hey, that'll happen no matter what they do with her, so why not?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think them not to have a relationship would make fandom pleased. Most people are pre-grousing about how it'll probably be romantic on the show when the books never had them in a relationship.

Of course, much of fandom is already shipping Sherlock/John, SO THERE'S THAT. :D
ext_5608: (O_O)

[identity profile] wiliqueen.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. I'm... not sure I know what to do with any segment of fandom being predisposed to root against 'shipping. Though of course I expected a lot of people being poised to object to her getting in the way of the Sherlock/John Twu Wuv.

Oh, FANDOM. :-D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
XD

Of course this will probably all change once the episode actually airs. Sherlock/Irene shippers will rise up to do battle with Sherlock/John shippers, and fandom equilibrium will have been restored.

And the Irene/John shippers will complain about being ignored. :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! What about the Irene/John shippers??

[identity profile] marble-rose.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've managed to stay firmly out of fandom politics for this show. I learned my lesson with DW; nothing good ever comes of leaving the bunker.

Wrt Irene, I keep picturing River Song running around, mucking up another one of my shows, so anything that's not THAT will be a pleasant surprise. Otherwise, I'm braced for the worst.

At least her episode isn't the last of S2, so if she is that awful, there's time for Mark Gatiss to redeem the show for me, lol. So, I'm with you. I'm not going to bother fretting. *waves Switzerland flag*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not too fussed other than prepping for a River clone. (I'm really looking forward to Gatiss' Hounds ep anyway. Can't wait for that one!
