More Sherlock

Okay, if you've glanced in my direction in the recent past, you might know that I'm completely gaga for John/Sherlock (sexual, nonsexual, whatever). And so the latest episode gave me much squeeing.

When I posted about it, I mentioned that something felt off about the romance of Irene, but wasn't quite sure what. Honestly, I tend not to have deep thinky thoughts about shows, and sometimes can be blind about stuff.

This is a fantastic article about the failings in the writing of Irene. (Although the comments are full of douchetastic fails. I didn't get very far. Without ew-ing.)

So yeah, Irene...was problematic. I still generally liked her -- I haven't changed my mind about that -- although I wouldn't be sad if she never showed up again.

NOW SOMEONE SQUEE WITH ME ABOUT THE BROMANCE, OKAY?

LOL, I like her commentary on Doctor Who.

Oh, comments. I've stopped reading them on public news articles because they make me sad/angry/both with only the occasional hilarity.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The comments take "SOMEONE IS WRONG ON THE INTERNET" to a new level. XD

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Is her DW commentary muchly about Moffat's fails as a writer? If so, I would love links. :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if she's written other things, but the Sherlock article does mention DW Fails. HEH.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2012-01-03 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
lol she mentions in her Sherlock article that it's a better 'verse for Moffat because it deals primarily with men and the lead character isn't supposed to care that much about individuals/the greater good/etc.

[identity profile] elirrina.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the link in the entry about the fantastic article. :)

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2012-01-04 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I was hopeful she'd written about DW and Moffat's fail in that at length. Ah well.

[identity profile] marble-rose.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that article hit it on the head. The comments, though...ugh. Why are people so ignorant? Blech.

Okay, enough of that. *Ahem* SQUEE.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The comments! You people are GROSS.

OMG THE BROMANCE. *LOVES IT SO MUCH*

[identity profile] krabapple.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So I am eager to read the article, but in clicking over I just caught the headline and automatically said, aloud, YES.

In the meantime, how great was John beating up Sherlock? FANTASTIC IS WHAT THAT WAS.

I JUST WATCHED IT!!! FINALLY!!!

You know I don't ship John/Sherlock but the bromance was fun. Them giggling is always an enjoyable sight.

Yeah, the romance with Irene -- there was something off. I'll have to check out that article.

I've still compiling my thoughts. I'm about halfway through writing a reaction post -- I'm about to go to work, which will give a chance to further mull over the episode (because yes, that is pretty much what occupies my thoughts while at work, my various shows, lol) -- and then I'll post later.

I think she's spot on about Who -- one of my complaints about Moffat's era is the lack of heart.

She has points about Irene, though I still liked her -- but if Moffat were to bring her back, my mind might rapidly be changed.

I think Moffat shrinks from emotion, always covering it with a laugh. That can work in Sherlock, and worked in Coupling (which I found funny because I was close enough in age to the characters and the interactions were painfully true at times). It doesn't work with Who, though.

But. I love John/Sherlock, love the bromance and could watch that for hours. This episode reminded me why I like much of Moffat's work, even if he's disappointed me lately.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I finally gave up on DW just because I couldn't connect with it anymore. I think you're right about him shrinking from emotion and that it normally works with some shows but not DW. Probably why I didn't have a problem with it on Sherlock until it became blatant fail - you really don't need a lot of emotional type stuff on the show.

But the bromance! I LOVE IT SO. I can't wait for Hounds!

LOL @ the comments. Whenever you write something like this, whether it's on tumblr or in a proper news outlet, there's always going to be A) Obnoxious Moffat/(insert person of choice) stans who can't stand to see their object of worship criticized in any way, B) People who think you're taking things "too seriously" because it's "just entertainment" C) the Trolls and D) one or two comments that are actually well thought out and balanced, usually soon to be replied to by A, B, and/or C.

I am glad the mainstream media isn't completely oblivious to Moffat's problematic portrayals. Sometimes it seems like it's just our small part of fandom plugging away, while the rest of the world heaps praise on him.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It was REALLY nice to see this in a wider forum. I thought this kind of stuff was only ever grumbled into the wind by small sections of fandom. Of course the comments are fairly predictible, aren't they?

Anyway, I just read this which was really good!
