MWAH.

I have to laugh whenever one of these "YOU ARE DOING FANDOM WRONG" essays comes along. I was fairly insulated in SG-1 fandom so I didn't see much of that there (ah, yahoogroups), but in DW fandom there was plenty. And then there's this.

Debate about Sherlock Holmes' sexuality = doing fandom wrong

Now I don't care if you think Sherlock Holmes is asexual or the biggest player on the planet. Whether you think that Holmes and Watson are just companions or are shagging like bunnies. That's not mockable. What is is the "YOU MUST DO [insert whatever here] IN ORDER TO DO FANDOM RIGHT."

Also the fact that whenever someone reblogs some Sherlock shipping on tumblr, a puppy dies. (That...could be true. Tumblr is evil and this could be one of its many evil aspects.) So remember, people. To fully enjoy Sherlock Holmes you must bow to ACD canon and keep in mind that the Doctor doesn't love his Companions like that.

people are strange and need to eat less sugar.

Yes they do.

Wow. That is . . . something.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Something is a good word to describe it. :D

[identity profile] jacksrubberduck.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I have only one word and that word is 'BOLLOCKS'.
Someone obviously doesn't like sharing their toys.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Sharing, or people even thinking about their toys. XD

[identity profile] jacksrubberduck.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Especially porny thoughts! ;)

THAT WORD JUST KILLED A PUPPY.

XD EVIL.

I can see from the notes that there are probably some excellent rebuttals that have been reblogged from it but, dammit, I spend enough time on Tumblr reading Glee arguments. I can't break out into another fandom's debate.

But, yeah, agreed on the whole 'you're not a real fan if...' or 'you're doing fandom wrong...' line. It's just ridiculous and totally negates anything that comes after.

however, for every puppy that tumblr kills it replaces it with ten cat GIFs

I mostly try to avoid tumblr except for when I'm in a pic mood. Tumblr breeds some weird shit.

It's such a silly thing to write - it's basically saying that everyone must think like I do or else they are WRONG.

however, for every puppy that tumblr kills it replaces it with ten cat GIFs

So that's the circle of life!

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I live on Tumblr for Glee fandom and Glee fandom alone. Which steals my sanity daily and leaves me a blubbering mess on the floor. Tumblr is a crazy, crazy place...hence why Glee fandom fits so well there. Glee...I wish I could quit you

But the amount of petty and flawed arguments that go on there are unbelievable. Most of them boiling down to 'my opinion is the only one that matters'. Normally resulting in '...and that is why my ship is totally going to happen, even though they have never actually met'.

Also, EVERYTHING in life leads to cat GIFs.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!

Sorry, what? :D

[identity profile] yourebrilliant.livejournal.com 2012-02-06 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Glee, I wish I could quit you

I am so close to quitting, I can't even. I dropped out of s2 last year and then when I saw BIOTA I came back on board and got a friend to catch me up, so I feel like I should try to ride it out no matter how bad it gets but, god, it really seems like Glee is testing the limits of my love. I spent most of Yes/No going wtf? and ALL of Michael going "please god, no, make it stop". I don't know if I can even watch the Ricky Martin episode. I didn't think they could find a pervier teacher than Will, but it looks like they managed it! Right now, I'm clining to the promise of *spoiler in white text* Matt Bomer and Dave Karofsky

um, yeah, long!comment is long XD

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2012-02-06 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm afraid Dave Karofsky coming back is one of the main reasons I want to quit Glee right now. The character triggers my sexual harassment issues like whoa (I can't watch the scene of him harassing Kurt in Furt without being physically ill). The mention of his name in spoilers is enough to make me shaky and close to tears. I don't think I'll be able to watch any of the next few episodes without finding out exactly what happened in them first (although I think he's only in 3.14 the other two episodes sound pretty questionable plot wise).

Matt Bomer is one of the few spoilers that I am actually anticipating, though. I'm a huge White Collar fan, so I pretty much jumped up and down when that spoiler came out.

I actually kind of liked Michael (if only because it was less offensive than the last several episodes have been) but, god, I wish Sebastian had actually be handed over to the police. I know that Glee need him for the narrative but it sends a pretty poor message that you can cause a teenage to need surgery and get away scot free. Oh, and Rachel said yes which was horrifying but I suspect it'll be handled as such in the future episodes so I'm willing to not judge that too harshly yet.

[identity profile] yourebrilliant.livejournal.com 2012-02-06 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry to hear that. I really liked the character development they had for Dave later in the season and in TFT. Plus, I'm kind of hoping he'll bash Sebastian's face in for daring to make Kurt unhappy.

I know! Yes, because I'm a white collar fan. Not because Matt Bomer is allergic to shirts. Nope. It does look like really good casting, though.

Oh, I know! There's a difference between taking the high road and letting someone get away with assault. (or whatever the legal name would be). I'm all for them refusing to get drawn into a fight that might result in them getting thrown out of sectionals but, um, this is not just about Glee Club (heresy!) it's also about Blaine's SCARRED EYE! Ugh. I keep hoping Sebastian'll fall into a convenient crater.

Oh, I know. I was quite excited at the start of the episode to see Rachel actually thinking about the consequences of her decisions for once. Especially since I can't help feeling that, for all Finn loves Rachel, his proposal is more to do with his own feelings of inadequacy than with his wish to spend his life with Rachel. He's worried that she'll disappear to New York and he'll be stuck in Ohio. I just...the way he proposed, it seemed like, "the only thing I'm good at it being in love with you. so i'll just do that" But, no, apparently it wasn't about making a grown up decision, it was about whether Rachel got into NYADA or not. As with most things with this show, the more they tell me that Finchel are endgame, or ND are a family, or w/e, the less I believe it.

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr isn't totally evil! It introduced me to a couple of shows. :D

Er... I may have missed the boat here. Okay, I hate the "doing it wrong" bit unless I'm making fun of myself.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is like...95% evil. I'll give you the 5%.

And self mocking is always allowed. I engage in it frequently. :D

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't hate Tumblr, it's got so much pretty!

YAY!!! I actually do use the "doing it wrong" bit to mock myself. Like there's a ship that I love now but at the beginning I got more out of the male character and his ex-wife so I had moments of "I'm doin' it wrong!" :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I know I'm doing it wrong when I'm able to ship Sherlock/John in just about every version (TV, movie, book) until I see Jeremy Brett's face. Then not so much. /SHALLOW

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, no, he seems unshippable. Oops?

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, maybe one day you will!

[identity profile] tripocket.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This type of person makes me want to spam them with as much porn art of John and Sherlock as I possibly can just so I can watch them turn all red in the face and explode from the WRONGNESS OF IT ALL!!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It reminds me of that Benedict Cumberbatch quote not too long ago that was basically something like... "There's lots of John/Sherlock stuff out there. Some of it is funny and some of it is PORN! O_O"

It was like, oh honey. Stay away from the internet. Please? XD

I couldn't read the whole thing -- I stopped here -- anyone who focuses on sexuality in this series is either being manipulative or completely missing the point.

People focus on Sherlock's sexuality because he's a human being, and we, the viewers are human beings, and thus are interested in Sherlock Holmes in all of his facets.

That doesn't mean we ignore every other aspect of the show. Now, as you know, I don't ship anyone on the show, but I do find Sherlock incredibly sexy -- that doesn't make me a horrible fan.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG! ;D

I haven't quite decided if I'm being manipulative or completely missing the point yet. I mean, I appreciate other aspects of the show so I imagine that gives me a bit of leeway to choose my own failing. On the one hand I quite like the idea of manipulating...something, but on the other I do enjoy blissful ignorance every once in a while.

[identity profile] marble-rose.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
*Yawn* I had enough of that kind of crap in the Who fandom.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? It's bringing back so many memories. :D

*nods* I imagine that when the New Mister Ed fandom comes along in 2016 there will be essays about people needing to OBEY THE ORIGINAL.

What is it with you and the "He doesn't love his friends like that, you sickos!!!" fandoms?

(I seem to be drawn more to the "He loves my favorite more than your favorite, neener neener" fandoms.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, right? I think next fandom should be one where there's a canon relationship but I choose to believe one is asexual.

Hee! Think of all the wank you could cause!

The assholery is strong with that one, crikey. I think the best rebuttal was this one, on queering literature.

But on a more basic level, I don't understand what the fuck is wrong with people that they have such difficulty accepting that "some people like this, and I don't, and both are okay." Nobody online has ever been voted Fandom Police, but folks are continually nominating themselves for that imaginary position.

Yeah, exactly. I'm just glad that generally people don't put up with that crap.

[identity profile] sherbertglasses.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Fucking ridiculous. The only time anyone is ever doing fandom wrong is when they don't let everyone else do fandom however the fuck they want.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
EXACTLY!

[identity profile] alexiscartwheel.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn. That was harsh! I'm not even involved in Sherlock fandom, and I'm insulted just because of the "holier than thou, you suck at being fans if you're not fans of the right thing and in the right way" attitude.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't you know? There's a proper way to do things around these parts! ;)
