MWAH.
I have to laugh whenever one of these "YOU ARE DOING FANDOM WRONG" essays comes along. I was fairly insulated in SG-1 fandom so I didn't see much of that there (ah, yahoogroups), but in DW fandom there was plenty. And then there's this.
Debate about Sherlock Holmes' sexuality = doing fandom wrong
Now I don't care if you think Sherlock Holmes is asexual or the biggest player on the planet. Whether you think that Holmes and Watson are just companions or are shagging like bunnies. That's not mockable. What is is the "YOU MUST DO [insert whatever here] IN ORDER TO DO FANDOM RIGHT."
Also the fact that whenever someone reblogs some Sherlock shipping on tumblr, a puppy dies. (That...could be true. Tumblr is evil and this could be one of its many evil aspects.) So remember, people. To fully enjoy Sherlock Holmes you must bow to ACD canonand keep in mind that the Doctor doesn't love his Companions like that.

But, yeah, agreed on the whole 'you're not a real fan if...' or 'you're doing fandom wrong...' line. It's just ridiculous and totally negates anything that comes after.

I mostly try to avoid tumblr except for when I'm in a pic mood. Tumblr breeds some weird shit.

It's such a silly thing to write - it's basically saying that everyone must think like I do or else they are WRONG.
however, for every puppy that tumblr kills it replaces it with ten cat GIFsSo that's the circle of life!

Glee...I wish I could quit youBut the amount of petty and flawed arguments that go on there are unbelievable. Most of them boiling down to 'my opinion is the only one that matters'. Normally resulting in '...and that is why my ship is totally going to happen, even though they have never actually met'.
Also, EVERYTHING in life leads to cat GIFs.

Sorry, what? :D

Glee, I wish I could quit youI am so close to quitting, I can't even. I dropped out of s2 last year and then when I saw BIOTA I came back on board and got a friend to catch me up, so I feel like I should try to ride it out no matter how bad it gets but, god, it really seems like Glee is testing the limits of my love. I spent most of Yes/No going wtf? and ALL of Michael going "please god, no, make it stop". I don't know if I can even watch the Ricky Martin episode. I didn't think they could find a pervier teacher than Will, but it looks like they managed it! Right now, I'm clining to the promise of *spoiler in white text* Matt Bomer and Dave Karofsky
um, yeah, long!comment is long XD

Matt Bomer is one of the few spoilers that I am actually anticipating, though. I'm a huge White Collar fan, so I pretty much jumped up and down when that spoiler came out.
I actually kind of liked Michael (if only because it was less offensive than the last several episodes have been) but, god, I wish Sebastian had actually be handed over to the police. I know that Glee need him for the narrative but it sends a pretty poor message that you can cause a teenage to need surgery and get away scot free. Oh, and Rachel said yes which was horrifying but I suspect it'll be handled as such in the future episodes so I'm willing to not judge that too harshly yet.

I know! Yes, because I'm a white collar fan. Not because Matt Bomer is allergic to shirts. Nope. It does look like really good casting, though.
Oh, I know! There's a difference between taking the high road and letting someone get away with assault. (or whatever the legal name would be). I'm all for them refusing to get drawn into a fight that might result in them getting thrown out of sectionals but, um, this is not just about Glee Club (heresy!) it's also about Blaine's SCARRED EYE! Ugh. I keep hoping Sebastian'll fall into a convenient crater.
Oh, I know. I was quite excited at the start of the episode to see Rachel actually thinking about the consequences of her decisions for once. Especially since I can't help feeling that, for all Finn loves Rachel, his proposal is more to do with his own feelings of inadequacy than with his wish to spend his life with Rachel. He's worried that she'll disappear to New York and he'll be stuck in Ohio. I just...the way he proposed, it seemed like, "the only thing I'm good at it being in love with you. so i'll just do that" But, no, apparently it wasn't about making a grown up decision, it was about whether Rachel got into NYADA or not. As with most things with this show, the more they tell me that Finchel are endgame, or ND are a family, or w/e, the less I believe it.

Er... I may have missed the boat here. Okay, I hate the "doing it wrong" bit unless I'm making fun of myself.

And self mocking is always allowed. I engage in it frequently. :D
no subject
YAY!!! I actually do use the "doing it wrong" bit to mock myself. Like there's a ship that I love now but at the beginning I got more out of the male character and his ex-wife so I had moments of "I'm doin' it wrong!" :D

People focus on Sherlock's sexuality because he's a human being, and we, the viewers are human beings, and thus are interested in Sherlock Holmes in all of his facets.
That doesn't mean we ignore every other aspect of the show. Now, as you know, I don't ship anyone on the show, but I do find Sherlock incredibly sexy -- that doesn't make me a horrible fan.

I haven't quite decided if I'm being manipulative or completely missing the point yet. I mean, I appreciate other aspects of the show so I imagine that gives me a bit of leeway to choose my own failing. On the one hand I quite like the idea of manipulating...something, but on the other I do enjoy blissful ignorance every once in a while.

But on a more basic level, I don't understand what the fuck is wrong with people that they have such difficulty accepting that "some people like this, and I don't, and both are okay." Nobody online has ever been voted Fandom Police, but folks are continually nominating themselves for that imaginary position.

That was FANTASTIC.

Yeah, exactly. I'm just glad that generally people don't put up with that crap.
