My fannish life is pretty dry these days, so I haunt the ouat tag...
Every fandom is different, and if you throw Tumblr in the mix they're even differenter.
Once Upon a Time fandom on tumblr is a bit loopy to say the least. The majority of it involves explaining why a person's ship is totally canon, even if it's not remotely canon (or even if it's already canon.) CANON is a very big thing in OUaT Tumblr fandom. It's like...The Prize. And I've seen this for every single ship imaginable.
The entertainment part comes in when people take enormous leaps to get to this "canon" proof of a ship. Like...
**I really did run across someone saying pretty much this. Which means that John/Sherlock IS TOTALLY CANON. \o/ I fully expect S3 to have Johnlock babies, and if they don't, TPTB TOTALLY LED US ASTRAY BECAUSE OF ALL THE JOHNLOCK THEY WEREN'T SAYING ON THE SHOW. DAMN YOU, MOFFAT. WHY DO YOU HATE THE MPREG?
