Microsoft? K.I.S.S. isn't just a band.

Windows Vista

So...basically Widgets and a Firefox-like IE in exchange for bogging down my computer with the new "enhanced graphics" interface? Um, pass. Pass, pass, pass.

ETA: I'm looking at screen shots of some of the graphics here and am being really confused by the strung-together words next to the pictures. Words like "looks cool" and "got the look." Yet the close-ups reveal much fugliness. Maybe I'm just jaded due to the fact that I don't give a shit that a computer file is made to look like a paper file folder. Maybe.

MSN search bar in IE? Whoopdeeshit. Why the hell would I want to use MSN's search site anyway?

looks deeply gimmicky, to me.

Yeah, pretty much.

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
One reason to upgrade - MS is only releasing Halo2 for Windows Vista. ;-)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. That's a *real* big draw for me.

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured it would be.

There are a lot of security improvements though, which I guess is the big thing. And having IE run in an "isolated" mode so that it only has User level access is also a very good idea.

Most of the magazines I've read seem pretty positive about it, but I haven't seen it yet myself so I'll reserve judgement.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess the mags are drooly about it for reasons that I really don't care about. Security, yeah. But the rest just seems like so much fluff, some of it highly annoying.

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
By you're statement you're implying that there are things about a Microsoft operating system that aren't annoying. Is that true? ;-)

I am quite fond of the TARDIS icon I have on the Start menu...

When will Bill just give up and admit he wants to be Steve Jobs when he grows up?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I would expect to see the msPod before that. Sadly, it will crash on a regular basis, include a useless CtrlAltDel key, and constantly want to update itself. Unfortunately the software will be so bloated that it won't be able to actually play music unless you spring for the memory upgrade.

LOL. I like my firefox. I have a google search bar. Heee :D Silly crappy Wigets.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I love my Firefox and if I need to search, it takes less than a second to actually go to google. Besides, I like seeing the different pictures they put up. :)

I've seen Widgets in action and I *might* use them - although I think I'd be more likely to turn them all off after about a month.

[identity profile] spacefiend.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, right. I'll just stick with Linux, thanks. I love the fact that most of these "new" features are things that Linux has had forever. (At least based on what my father's told me, seeing as I've only used Linux for a few weeks.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I almost made it to Linux once, but had too many programs that wouldn't run on it. Maybe someday.

[identity profile] spacefiend.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a few things I can't give up, but that's why I'm dual-booting. That way I can only go into Windows when I actually need it or once a week to update.

Have you ever tried using Wine or Crossover Office? They're programs that let some Windows programs run in Linux. I haven't tried it yet, but at some point I'll probably see if I can make iTunes work under it.

I've not heard of either. I wonder how the performance would be.

[identity profile] spacefiend.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've read, it tends to depend on what program you're running - great for some things, not so great for others. I'll probably try to make one of them work when I go home to visit sometime near the end of this semester (when my father's around to help) - I'll post on how well it works.

And if you ever wanted to give Linux another try, dual-booting is relatively easy to set up. It works on my 4-year-old laptop quite well with Windows XP and CentOS as my Linux distro.

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
There is always the option of running VMWare or something similar to run your Windows OS under Linux.

Or you can do the reverse, as I have versions of both Red Hat Enterprise Workstation 4 Update 1 and Debian running in Microsoft Virtual PC. You just need to make sure you have a powerful enough CPU and sufficient memory to do that properly.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-02-17 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Might have to fiddle with that on some rainy Saturday.

I've been hearing a lot of hoopla over Vista. Personally if has nothing to do with me as I'm a Mac user. But my friend (a PC|Linux user) really doesn't think much of it. Except that it will require loads of computer power. And that won't equal what you get out of it.

Unless you buy a new machine

And I found it amusing how they talked about finally getting features that have been on Macs for years and the NEW tabbed browser on IE7.

HEY MICROSOFT! Did you fix the damn Box model in IE7??? The web pages I write STILL don't display properly in any version of IE up to 6.

Yup, that's exactly the way it's looking to me.

Totally! Did it have to wait for a new OS?
