Don't know much about history...

I was telling [livejournal.com profile] manticoran that I have no idea why I feel the need to involve my entire flist in my writing process. Chalk it up to attention whore or drama queen or perhaps needing a few sessions on the couch.

ANYWAY...

I'm brainstorming for the new fics and while I don't want to do everything on Earth, some historical stuff could be fun too. Anyone have any interesting events in history they like? Maybe something lesser-known? Maybe something unexplained? I'm pretty much looking at everything. Brainstorming, after all. Well, brainstorming with my flist...

No need to know anything about Doctor Who whatsoever. And I'm trying to stay out of the U.S. just because that would seem weird. Oh, and I'm trying to stay out of London as well. Heh heh.

And now, I'm *almost* out of here for the 3-day weekend! WOO! I am so in the starting blocks, ready to go.

You know, I was a history major. You'd think I could come up with something off the top of my head, but not so much. Let me think on it a bit and I'll see if I can't email you with some ideas over the weekend. :-)

VICTORIANS!

They could go meet Jules Verne. (The real one or the one from The Secret Adventures of. Which I will one day write a crossover for, using the Eighth Doctor and Charley, because the fact that two of the actresses are sisters in RL is too entertaining to pass up.)

Or if you wanted to be depressing, they could visit Ireland, particularly the west, during the potato famine. Or hey, the 1916 Easter Rising. (Although I think someone already did a long Nine/Rose fic set during that event.) There were a lot of big, interesting Parliament debates about Irish Home Rule in the latter half of the nineteenth century, although probably you'd have to do a lot of research to do much with that. But hey, there's always the riots in Dublin in 1907 when The Playboy of the Western World was first performed at the Abbey Theatre, and people took umbrage at a character using the word "shift," as in "nightgown."

Ah, Edwardian prudery.

Emily Davison, in 1913, threw herself under the king's horse in 1913 to make a point about women's suffrage. I could see Rose getting involved in the movement in some way, attending meetings of the Women's Social and Political Union or something.

I could see the Doctor, sometime in 1812, reading a newspaper and murmuring, "I told that Napoleon fellow not to invade Russia in the winter, but he wouldn't listen..."

Hmm. I can't think of too many unexplained things off the top of my head. Amelia Earheart's disappearance, maybe? Any of the planes or boats that have gone down in the Bermuda Triangle? Oooh, there's the lost colony of Roanoke. Hey, Atlantis! *g* (Actually, there's a Breton legend about the City of Is, which is supposed to be either Atlantis, or Atlantis's sister city. Slightly less overdone, anyway.) Arthurian legend, perhaps?

Very cool ideas!!

Oh man. Jack would have a field day with that.

I could see Rose getting involved in the movement in some way, attending meetings of the Women's Social and Political Union or something.

Oooh yeah.

Started commenting on the rest of the ideas but they were all pretty much, "Ooooh!" :D

Thanks!!

"You're upset because someone said something equivalent to 'nightgown'? What? No, WHAT? Man, I'm glad I didn't grow up in this century! But now that you mention it, does the script call for seeing any of the girls in their shift?"

Heehee. You're welcome. :)

I'm quite fond of the fall of Constantinople myself (or anything Byzantine really).

In the weirdness category:

In 1882 the captain of a British ship called the Jesmond claimed that he and his crew had found, and walked on, an island in the middle of the Atlantic. It was (obviously) on none of their charts, but they said they found ruins and grave goods. Just after they left the island, they saw it sink. It's a good yarn, anyway ...

And there's always the story of the two women touring Versailles who claimed to have suddenly found themselves in a previous-century Versailles. I can't find the book that goes into the most detail on this just at the moment, but the incident is pretty well known. This page talks about it. Anyway, it seems rather Whovian to me. I have other time-slip references if you want them.

OOOOOOOH! Obviously aliens. Obviously. *files away*

Very!! Gonna have to look at that one too!

Sure!

Lessee ...

- Harold Holt, Prime Minister of Australia and a good swimmer, unaccountably disappears while while swimming at Cheviot Beach near Portsea south of Melbourne.
- Anything to do with the Bermuda triangle
- Anything related to the Pyramids (though obviously taking the Pyramids of Mars into account)
- UFO over LA on Feb 25, 1942

I'll see if I can come up with any other unexplained events in history.

Poor dude.

Oooh, yeah!!

- Anything related to the Pyramids (though obviously taking the Pyramids of Mars into account)

Was that the only Egypt Who episode? Because I have seen that one.

- UFO over LA on Feb 25, 1942

Heh heh. Just got a flash of Jack doing something to cause that. :D

Poor dude.

It's one of Australia's biggest unsolved mysteries ever. They never found anything of what happened. Maybe underwater aliens took him. Maybe he came ashore down the beach and walked into a blue box looking for a towel ...

Was that the only Egypt Who episode?

So far as I can recollect, yes.

Just got a flash of Jack doing something to cause that.

Bad!Jack! ;-)

Maybe he came ashore down the beach and walked into a blue box looking for a towel ...

And my mind instantly wanders off to HHGG.

"...any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with."

:D

I haven't read any of the comments above mine so I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but what about Ancient Greece/Rome with Cleopatra or Plato or something?

Or umm....meeting Catherine the Great? Mary Queen of Scots? Rasputin? (*shudder*)

P.S. Yay for more fluff!!!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-09-02 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, The Stone Rose was set in Rome, so don't think I want to do that. But Cleopatra could be really cool! Or any of the others you mentioned! :)

How about something to do with the Marie Celeste?

Oh, very cool! Thanks!
