Posty McPost
Looking at my last speculation post, I think I can safely say I've ventured off into "that's crazy talk!" territory. :D
I shouldn't be surprised, considering I did the same last year. Although, I'm not stressing about a main character maybe dying this year, so the speculation's a bit more enjoyable this time around. However, it's still just as maddening. Mwah.
It was almost a bit lovely how the Doctor wanted to take the fight off Earth. That they could go kill each other, just somewhere else. It's just something that's always been this trait of the Doctor's, even in the classic series. He's like the Earth's #1 fanboy. And probably even moreso since he made Gallifrey go boom. He adopted Earth long ago, and just has hung out on it so much in New Who.
Also, I wonder if at the Academy they made everyone choose these new names. I mean, they ripped the Gallifreyan kiddies away from their families at age 8, maybe the "names" are another form of separation. I think there were some Time Lords with name-sounding names, but maybe they were chosen as well? Could explain why the Doctor's all "900 years, I'm coping" when asked if he cares that he doesn't have a name - he was made to abandon it at 8. Also, it would *totally* fit when Reinette said that his name was more than a secret, and called him a "lonely little boy."
Also also, Gallifrey = Atlantis.

And you got to see real Time Lord costumes in the background. Obviously the Doctor didn't have to explain those to Jack and Martha. ;)

Well, the Master and the Doctor were talking about how they chose those names for themselves, so not sure about having to give them up. Maybe they did? Hmm. I was kinda thinking that everyone chose names, but some little Time Lords were very pompous about it all? I mean, these weren't normal 8-year-olds. They were probably doing recreational mathmatics at age 2. :D (Yeah, it's a bit of a weak theory.)

Yeah, good thing they couldn't see the flashback, otherwise it would have been a "WHOA THERE, SPARKY! We're gonna need to laugh a bit here..." (Although, those Time Lord robes looked *way* better here than they ever did in the classic series.)

True. But it seemed like it was something that all the smart kids did, so obviously it wasn't uncommon either for Gallifreyan children. Hopefully we'll get a bit more back story next week.

Mostly because they were blurry, in the distance, and in the dark!!! ;)

Side note - I'm kinda now wondering if *all* Gallifreyan kids automatically got sent to the Academy. It sorta sounded like it. And just kept going to school until they passed. (Aww, poor Doctor failing three times. *snickers*) But I know there seems to be this notion that there are Gallifreyans, and then there are Time Lords. But thinking on it, I can't say that I've ever seen a non-Time Lord Gallifreyan. Well, other than the people who lived outside the snow-globe bubble.

Mwah. Yes. Nothing like the fear that is this:

It does seem like a possibility.

Right, the ones Leela ran into in "The Invasion of Time". But even then they seemed more like exiled Time Lords than regular Gallifreyans.
In fact, most of Gallifrey outside the Citadel seemed pretty well uninhabitable. So where would the other Gallifreyans be?

Oh...that's right - they could have been Time Lords as well. Or wasn't there something about them wanting to get back to nature and so they split, rather than being exiled? (Or am I thinking of the hunting party from Castrovalva?) I mean, Leela ran out with some exiled-type Time Lords but were the others in exile?

Yeah, that band of people outside the city was pretty small. Unless there were more cities than just the Citadel?

In the Episode Guide on Outpost Gallifrey, they're described as "outlaw Time Lords", so I guess that tends to suggest that all Gallifreyans are Time Lords - at least all Gallifreyans still alive at the time of the Citadel anyway.
Unless there were more cities than just the Citadel?
Something that has no doubt been discussed at great length in fandom. There is no cannon story on this at all, with the impression being that it's just the Citadel that is populated and everywhere outside Gallifrey is wilderness.
At least so far as I recall anyway.

Ah. And I listened to that scene again where the Doctor's describing Gallifrey, and it really does sound like *all* Gallifreyans become Time Lords.

Except for the Tomb of Rassilon. Or Fortress. Castle? What was that thing? I went searching around last night after watching the phone conversation for reference to "the Cruciform" - the Master said he fled after the Daleks took that over - but apparently that's something new. Eh, maybe that's a name for the Tomb of Rassilon. Odd to think that Gallifrey would have anything cross-shaped.

*shudders* Oh, geez. I got the chills imagining DT in that getup. Not the good chills, mind. He'd look seriously freaky in that. Fortunately, that should never come up. I hope.

Muha! My mum called me after SoD and was just like: "Wow, this version of the Doctor is really attached to the earth, isn't he?" I tried to explain that the Doctor has ALWAYS been obsessed with the earth, but I'm not entirely certain she understood. :D
Actually, I think that was one of my favourite parts of tSoD. The Doctor! Being all heroic! And morally righteous! And stuff! Also a little bit emo, but Ten's been an all around sunshine-like joy this season, so that kind of fit. *G*

Poor, poor Doctor. He just is so utterly desperate at this point. So sick of the same old, same old when everything's been burned to the ground. However, the Master's just back in that same old place. The Doctor actually thinks he can save the Master, when I'm thinking this can only end in tears.

Don't forget his school nickname, "Theta Sigma", though. That makes me think that the students were given "designations" of some sort when they were placed into the Academy, then maybe were able chose a new name/title/whatever when they graduated.
BTW, thanks to the wonders of the internet, I found this really nifty little old school reference guide while googling Theta Sigma. :)

Some pretty fun stuff in there about the Doctor's years at the Academy! (And it also support for the theory that there are other people on Gallifrey who were not Time Lords.)

I always thought of that as just that - a nickname. And have had it in my mind as something given by other students - like the guy he ran into in the Key to Time series. But it also could have been something that they were given/chose when they graduated. This is a weird comparison, but don't nuns choose/get different names when they're done with nun training? Or something?

Neat!

Although their reference to the "the lower classes of Gallifrey cannot regenerate their bodies" doesn't have an episode reference. In all the classic series I've seen, I've never even heard of the lower classes of Gallifrey. It could very well have been picked up in audio or books though.
