Syrup Sponge

This is so randomly insane, I just can't foist it on anyone's friends page. Its origins are rooted in a discussion with [livejournal.com profile] josephides - what isn't?

Green's Microbake Ready to Mix Golden Syrup Sponge Pudding
New improved recipe - just add an egg!

Apparently not a contraceptive.

Why do I get the feeling that this insta-bake sponge is to the real thing as Top Ramen is to real Japanese noodles? But, the packaging seems to indicate that it at least originated in the UK. For one thing, no nutritional value chart in sight. It's also spitting out strange words at me like "Egham," "Surry," "England," and using some kind of measurement unit known only as "ml." Hmm.

Why do I love that this company's headquarters is in a place called Thorpe Lea Manor? It sounds so...so...

Lizzy: Mr. Darcy! What brings you to Thorpe Lea Manor?

Mr. Darcy: My feelings will not be repressed. Against all reason, I must tell you how ardently I admire and love syrup sponge.

Lizzy: Why, with so evident a design of offending and insulting me, have you chosen to tell me that you liked syrup sponge against your will?!

The picture on the box looks like cake.

Well, here I go.

Holy crap that's sweet! But now I understand the "it's *not* cake" thing. It's cake-like, but a really moist, eggy cake. The taste kind of reminds me of pancakes. Don't think we really have any equivalent here in the States. Okay, I don't think I can eat anymore - the aforementioned sweetness and it's really, really rich. But pretty darn tasty. Very comfort food-ish.

Now in the grander scheme of things, if I hadn't ever tuned in to a little show called Stargate SG-1, I wouldn't be eating microwaved syrup sponge right now.

Incredible.

In case you're wondering, I got this at a local market that has some fun import sections: UK, Germany, Australia, France, Italy. Anyone got anything else I should try?

Ick for sweet richness. Except oreo cookies, of course. And then, only with milk, or I can't handle it.

I know, life is funny, ain't it? So many "If I hadn't ever tuned into a little show called Stargate SG-1's..." Case in point, for me: Write Porn.

I dunno...I picked up the chocolate-egg candy thing from the store a few minutes ago...it's hollow and hatched a toy smurf. It's called "Kinder Surprise" and I wanted to be surprised, and I *think* from the writing on the packaging, it's German.

Who knows how you'll be surprised...

Hey, Kinder surprise! Cool. Much fun - particularly when you're at work and building the stuff inside is far, far more interesting than, you know, working.

Okay, that's it. Kinder Surprise is next on my list.

Just like to point out... part of the surprise how little chocolate you actually get... k?

*g* Think I'll stick to eating syrup sponge.

It's called "Kinder Surprise"

Hmm. I'll have to look for it next time I'm over there.

Well, the Kinder Egg I bought last week had a fantastic/bizarre toy in it - it was a traffic light with eyes and arms and eveything! But that's not all... when you press down on it's little hat the 'lights' (i.e. stickers) change colour and it's arm moves up and down; waving a truncheon at you! Now, how could any kid (*cough* 24 year old) not love that? And it only took me half an hour to build it {g}.

The chocolate's scrummy, too!

Erm...what's a truncheon?

It's a policeman's club/baton (i.e. what our policemen carry as a weapon because they don't have guns) - not sure what you guys call it... a 'nightstick', maybe?

Oh...I see. Thanks.

You know, being a product of a good early British education, I should have known that...

You've lived in Britian? Cool! If I'm not being too nosey; whereabouts?

Uhm. That came our all wrong.

I mean, I went to a British-run school for British expats in Dubai when I was ferry little bitty. I also had British tutors. Heh. Only ever visited Britian. And then only for 4 days. One of these days...
