Oh Who fandom. The exaggerated need to love on Martha makes me giggle. The character had annoying traits just like every other character and her unrequitted moony crush was one of them. Blame RTD not the shippers. Actually, I don't even get some of the RTD reasoning either to be honest. They talk of his creating this awesome character but then putting his own romantic notions off on her. Ummm Rusty created the character from day one and the unrequitted crush was part of that. He didn't just throw it in. That was part of his vision of the character and that sucks, but it was there. After watching the finale I stand by our e-mail convo. I thought Martha had great dignity when she left the TARDIS citing the need to stay with her familya nd help them get through the trauma of what happened. But when she came back to make it clear that she was leaving because he didn't love her back, my respect level dipped for her. I know you don't agree, but that just took away from what I liked about her.

I've got this whole *sort-of* idea about it. 1) It made for a natural exit for a companion that had always been intended to be full-time for just one series. 2) It threw up a barrier between the Doctor and Martha (*points to Gridlock and how the Doctor never brought up Rose again to Martha after that*), which closed off the Doctor from showing his emotional side to her.

They talk of his creating this awesome character but then putting his own romantic notions off on her. Ummm Rusty created the character from day one and the unrequitted crush was part of that. He didn't just throw it in. That was part of his vision of the character and that sucks, but it was there.

It basically parallels Sarah Jane a lot to me. However, Martha comes out way better since she made the decision to move on with her life now, as opposed to Sarah Jane, who couldn't until she got that closure with the Doctor 20-odd years later.
