I'm home sick today, and so I've been watching Torchwood. Am probably going to have to stop soon due to the headache.

Random Shoes

I almost skipped this one since it I knew it was a more "Love & Monsters" type episode. ("Love & Monsters" was decent for what it was - but beyond getting some Jackie insight, I don't have a lot of use for it.) But this one had the mystery of the shoes going through it, which was enough to keep me interested. I would love to find out someday that Gwen is somehow connected/related to Gweneth (from "The Unquiet Dead") and that's how Eugene was able to communicate with her.

The inner-dialog narrative was interesting for an episode, but glad it was just for an episode. The ending was a bit hokey though. They had an actual "scientific" (I can't type that with a straight face) reason for Eugene to still be around after his death, but they wound up ignoring the reason so that he could save Gwen and have this light-filled departure. *makes frowny face* I would have preferred that they'd stuck to it completely being tied to the eye being in his body, thanks.

Out of Time

*stares*

That was pretty much a complete waste. I fast forwarded a few times not out of revulsion (Countrycide) but out of boredom. By the end, I wound up with tiny, and I mean tiny, insights about Jack and Owen, but it was not worth a near hour of bland dialog and uninteresting stories.

I'm just...ARG! Even Cyberwoman I had fun watching because of the cheesetasticness, but this was...so so so so so so so so so so so so so BORING. Which for some reason is enraging me at the moment. Grr. I think I need juice.

Random Shoes was very meh, for me. I love Jackie Tyler to bits and I ended up liking LINDA, so L&M was a pretty good ep for me. I didn't care enough about Eugene or his relationship with Gwen to care about this episode.

Out of Time... I am torn on this one. On one hand, I really rather liked it. On the other: NEEDS MORE CRACK. Owen and Diane had a slightly odd relationship, but I kind of liked it. The girl who went to London was quite cool. But Jack and what's-his-face's story just... I don't know. I felt like I should have cared more than I did.

My name-recollection skills are awesome, aren't they?

I didn't really find myself overly interested in his relationship with Gwen either.

Maybe it was the lack of crack. Or...I'm just not quite sure what the point of it all was.

It's funny how different our opinions are; Out of Time was quite possibly my favorite episode of the first series. Watching the poor souls try to fit into the present day was wrenching to me (in an enjoyable, "let's watch on TV" sort of way).

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because I've seen that whole displaced time traveler thing before?

I have, too, but for whatever reason it worked for me here because it took a different tack with the characters. Eh. To each her own. :)

Ain't that the truth? :D

Okay, I'm seriously still going: "What? WHAT? What?" Should I be worrying about my failing memory at my tender young age? Sheesh. I *know* I've watched these.

Mostly just commenting to say I hope you feel better soon. *non germy internet HUG*

BWAH! Are you sure you watched them? :D

Thanks.

Yes! Because I've come away with all the important things! Like who is shagging who (and sometimes that's hard to keep up with). And also that Jack can't die. And he keeps the Doctor's hand in a jar, which is weird and creepy.

*giggles insanely*

You're in good company. I haven't watched Torchwood since it aired.

I really didn't care for anyone on the team but Jack and maybe Tosh, a bit, so I didn't see the need to rewatch the episodes.

I am having a very hard time placing plot with title. I'm reading reactions and going "Did I like this? I don't think I did.... Moffat must have written it, HAH!"

I am sooo old!

I have become a ranty, crazy person in regards to Moffat.

If I ever make it to the BBC, I hope he's not around. Chances are, I'll come across him, start foaming at the mouth and begin screaming things like "mirrors, OOC, fireplace, chauvinist!" and then chase him with a fireplace poker while promising to make him look like a cross between a banana, timey, whimey stuff and a clockwork droid.

The D/R fans would probably give me a medal ;)

Me neither! I have a vague recollection of enjoying it well enough, but I don't ever want to have to think deeply on it. That would probably lead to brain damage.

That was the original plan, actually, but they seemed to shunt it aside pretty early, for whatever reason. She was supposed to be a reincarnation of her or something odd like that.

I feel your pain about watching this series - I'm glad I didn't spend money on it, that's fo sho.

I'm not sure that I'd recommend watching it as a cure for what ails you; perhaps staring at some pretty Tennant will make your head hurt less.

I wouldn't mind if they wound up doing that. It could be cool.

As long as it isn't when he's being all emo.

Of the entire team, I liked Tosh the best but found myself constantly yelling at her for mistakes, like ya know, NO APC for her systems! I mean, come on girl - you're super!geek and you've got no backup when Owen and Gwen are dorking around? I always figured that was the fault of the writers. The just couldn't let her be that much cooler. *sigh*

Oh god. I sound like another group... ::headdesk::

Iiiiinteresting. It would be cool if like because Gweneth died on the rift, she was like... shifted in time as a baby or something. Maybe that's what happens to people who die on the rift. Oooooh, maybe in one episode they've find a baby abandoned near some rift activity or something and somehow Gwens origins will come out.

Huh. I liked Out of Time loads better than Random Shoes. I mean, I could've done way less with Owen having sex, but other than that, like [livejournal.com profile] kalleah said, I liked seeing them trying to integrate. And mostly failing. I liked Jack sticking with that guy.

Maybe try rewatching it when you're not fighting off a headache?

Oh, and FYI, the next one, Combat, is the one written by Noel Clarke (Mickey).

*flops*

I'm not exactly sure what it was. It was kind of like being handed a Jane Austin novel when you were expecting, well, Torchwood.

Oooooooh!

Huh. Well, it did have a different feel, but that's part of what I liked about it. *shrug*

As to Combat, remember that it's basically Fight Club with Weevils, but there's some interesting Owen stuff in there. Some people hated it, but while it wasn't my favorite, I still enjoyed it well neough.

I never saw Fight Club, so maybe I'll like it? Or maybe not. Who knows? :D Actually, I think the only episode I'd watch again so far is "They Keep Killing Suzie."

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I never saw Fight Club, either, but that's what people said, and I'd seen enough clips from FC that I believe them.

I'm not a fan of either episode. BORING. Maybe it's because I miss the crack? *shrugs*

And I hope you feel better. Maybe this will put a smile on your face. :)

Okay, yes, there is smiling. WOO!!

Huh. I thought "Out of Time" was quite possibly the best episode of the first season. The tone is very different, but I thought the three relationships and their resolutions were very touching.

Next up: the Noel Clarke-penned episode, and then you get "Captain Jack Harkness," my overall favorite. You've got to hand-wave a few things, but it's still lovely.

Maybe I wasn't in that mindset or something. Like other people mentioned, maybe I've come to expect the crack and can't deal when it doesn't appear.

I've only heard a tiny bit about "Captain Jack Harkness," but I'm really looking forward to it.

Hahaha. These two were my favorites of the first season actually. I can't remember why I liked Random Shoes. I just remember having a feeling of liking it when it was over. It was late at night when I watched it. Maybe that has something to do with it.

The reason that I liked out of time though is the character development. I felt like we really got to see more of Gwen here. And I liked it. And of course we start to see some growth with Owen. Maybe that's why I liked it. I love me some character growth and direction. And I think I was fairly charmed by the guest actors too.

And finally, I am ashamed to admit it, but I cried when Jack was in the car with the older guy. Again, I was watching these really late at night at a high stress point in my life. So I may have just been all emotional. LOL. But I think it was just so tragic to see the themes of life and death and the possibility of never being able to die played with.

I'm not exactly sure why it didn't work for me. Maybe if I pondered for a while, but not sure how much of my brain I want to devote to Torchwood. :D

Well, tastes vary wildly because the boredom you had with Out of Time was me with Random Shoes (I've grown to appriciate Love & Monsters at least, but once watching Random Shoes was too much for me). And I quite like Out of Time; it's a slow and moody piece, and therefore quite different from usual Torchwood crack adventure, but I thought it was well done.

Oh well, I guess somebody has to like Shoes.

Maybe that's what made me not really like it? I'm not exactly sure.
