WAIT. THERE WAS A PENGUIN COMPANION?? A PENGUIN.

And people think RTD is cracky? Every time I think DW can't get any weirder, IT DOES. :D

Oh man. I suddenly want this to come up with Rose in fic.

Rose: You *seriously* traveled with a penguin?

Doctor: Don't knock it! That penguin kept me sane during the Peri years!

FOR REAL. The first time I heard that I was like...is this some obscure, old-school in-joke? APPARENTLY NOT. You can't make this show up. Seriously, I don't even know why people whined about Tinkerbell!Ten, with that lurking in the background. I've also seen a picture of Three dressed up as a washerwoman. I need to see this serial RIGHT NOW.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen that one!! :D Actually, you really should watch that one - it's The Green Death and Jo's last episode.

[identity profile] morgaine-nicely.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO!!! i did NOT know that hehe

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm totally amused. :D

[identity profile] violet-lane.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
xD Wow, that is hilarious.

And yeah, DW never manages to surprise me. There's actually a companion who turns into a Tardis! I don't understand how, but apparently there's a scene where she splits open and Eight and Fitz walk around inside her. CREEPY.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
That would be Compassion. She's actually far from the most obnoxious of the more outre companions during that era. You wanna talk about Mary Sues? Don't even get me started on Iris Wildthyme or Bernice Summerfield.

O_O

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, good old Frobisher. Back in the day they used to take advantage of having no effects budget in the strips by doing all the sorts of things they couldn't afford to do on the show without it looking completely crapulous.

Of course, it's not a particularly well-kept secret that Linus Torvalds is, in fact, Frobisher's current guise on Earth. XP

*squints* Clearly, I should have just accepted Tinkerbell!Doctor as a normal part of the crack that is Doctor Who. No wonder John Barrowman and David Tennant jumped for joy when they found out about the Jack=Boe thing. They both grew up with it (unlike me), so they have a much fuller understanding of just how insane DW can get. Jack=Boe is positively tame by comparison.

A penguin. *snickers* You know, SGA fanfic has a fairly well-known sub-genre of crack fic where characters turn into penguins, but at least that wasn't put in the official magazine or anything. Geez.

Apparently! So Jack=Boe, the Doctor glowing and floating because of good vibes, and even splitting into two... This is all TAME.

DW totally wins at crazy. :D

Oh my holy God. That is amazing. :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it? I wonder what other nuttiness is around.

[identity profile] svanderslice.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he wasn't even a real penguin, just a shapeshifting alien who preferred to run around as one. Although, when you think about it, why would anyone choose a penguin? Sure, they're cute and all, but who wants to waddle when you can run or fly?

I

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
The real answer: because the writers thought it was funny. I always kind of wondered, given the timing, if one of them hadn't gotten it into their head that it would be funny to have Opus from Bloom County travelling with the Doctor.

I seem to recall the in-story answer was something like he was fond of penguin-form because his ex-girlfriend used to be in penguin form a lot or something to that effect.

FROBISHERRRRR. Um, even having heard so little of him, I love him. He almost made it into a scrapped story I was writing because...PENGUIN. COMPANION. I might still bring him up later. Even if he actually was a heartsick shapeshifter. PENGUIN.

Do you need the Maltese Penguin audio? I think you do.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
PENGUIN. :D I think I might have to reference him myself. Somewhere.

Oh, Doctor Who. Please never stop being cracky. NEVER STOP.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
There's probably little chance of that. :D

[identity profile] threerings.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
We need to start a campaign for Ten to get his own penguin. Wouldn't that be perfect?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be! Or a kitten. I still think a kitten companion would be good.

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
...I sometimes really love this show.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You gotta love the crack. :D

[identity profile] sensiblecat.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, those were the days when the Doctor wrote the code for his own desktop themes.

[identity profile] maypanic.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
There was talk of having a Frobisher in the DragonCon parade this year. Probably 99% of the spectators would be mystified, but I would be filled with fannish glee!

(Anonymous) 2008-08-14 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people would probably think he's a Prinny from Disgaea or something.

I love this show so very much. And Frobisher = WIN. XD (Although I haven't seen much of him!)

I think the moral of this is if you don't *like* crack, why are you watching this show? This question goes out to those who complain about RTD's crack as though it's a new thing. *g*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
This is SO true. And even more true of Torchwood. :D "It's just crack and sex!" Um DUH! Heh heh.

[identity profile] azarsuerte.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Have never actually seen/heard any of the stories with Frobisher, but he is nevertheless the reason my all-companions-classic-and-current fanmix that I'm working on includes the song version of Sandra Boynton's "Your Personal Penguin." *g*

Doctor Who: WHERE THE CRACK IS CANON. (Er...well, dubious canon at least. ;-) )

I still like the expression "that's so cracky it could be canon!" :D

I do like that in that wiki article it says he preferred to be a penguin, well obviously!

I love my crazy show.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's such a natural thing to prefer to be! :D

It'd only be crazier if they had 10 different guys playing the same character and expected us to buy it. OH WAIT.

[identity profile] acciochocolate.livejournal.com 2008-09-04 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I still think that Frobisher also travelled with the Fourth Doctor, but only in this four-part mini-series that I once had from Marvel Comics. It was a re-print, but in colour, of the older British comic. I guess it was a test run that didn't do well; I found my copies in an old comic book store years and years ago.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-09-04 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
How cool!
