I've been watching Spooks/MI-5. (Why did they change the title for the US market? Although I have to say I prefer "MI-5" to "Spooks.")

(The real reason I started this is because I want to work up to the later series when Richard Armitage joins the cast. :D)

Okay, MI-5? Makes the Torchwood crew look completely healthy and sane and well adjusted. FOR SERIOUS.

One thing that I've found fascinating is the amount of paranoia and...and I don't know quite what to call it. These people would kill and die for each other, but at the same time turn on each other in a second when it comes to internal politics. It's fairly fucked up. Oh, sometimes they'll justify it as "for the greater good," but not always.

The moles are also fascinating. Like having someone from the PM's office infiltrating MI-5, just to get good information. It'd be like the White House covertly sending someone into the FBI so they could get decent info as to what was going on on a regular basis. Does that happen? It kind of boggles my mind.

Also, so far no one ever simply walks away from MI-5. They're either killed in action (DANNY!! *SOBS*) or are pushed out of it (Tom and Zoe). At least Zoe was able to end up with her fiance in Chile, thanks to Danny. Oh Danny. *sniffs* And hopefully Tom skipped off to America to find the ex-CIA woman. I would love to see Tom and Zoe accidentally running into each other on the outside. I'm curious as to what they'll actually do now. What line of work do you go into after being a spy?

I really enjoyed MI-5's first season (even though they were airing really cut down episodes on basic cable, so they didn't always make sense). I got attached to the initial cast, though, and had trouble continuing to care after various people were killed or screwed over. Probably ironic that I have a hard time with cast changes, considering my favorite show...

The name change happened because 'spook' has been used as a derogatory term for Black people in the US. Not recently, maybe, but still, probably not the sort of thing you want associated with your show.

I normally can't stand high turnover in cast, but I knew there was a lot of rotation ahead of time. That probably helped.

AH. Yeah, I didn't even think of that.

Woo! I love that show, although YES, no-one is ever ever safe. Just wait. ;__; Anyway, I believe they changed the name to MI5 here because 'spook' is a racial slur in American English.

PS Tom married Christine Dale, according to some sanctioned add-on to the show. Yay for one happyish ending. They run a security firm.

I think I'm pretty prepared for everyone to get burned at one point or another.

Didn't even cross my mind. It's a pretty old term.

Awww!

If you read Harry's diary it tells you tom and Christine run a 'security service' and are married.

Zoe and will have a daughter.

Awwww! At least they got happy endings since anyone who goes through there gets shredded in one way or another.

Me, too! And then I developed a massive crush on Adam/Rupert Penry-Jones and sort of forgot about RA. But season six Adam began to annoy me, so now I'm ready for RA's character (Lucas?). It'll be a million years before it's out on DVD, tho. I know there are other ways of obtaining it, but I can't seem to manage. :(

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-04-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I like Adam and his wife. They're interesting! I've no idea when I'll see the current stuff either.

[identity profile] stephdub.livejournal.com 2009-04-15 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Lucas is made of awesome.
<---- And Russian tattoos.

I've watched Spooks all along, and always loved it, so I was even more excited when I found out that RA was joining the cast. I downloaded all the episodes as the season played out, so if anyone needs a torrent site I can hook you up. Or if you're not bit torrent people I can burn off avi files for you. Let me know - no one should suffer from RAW (Richard Armitage Withdrawl)!

I'm doing pretty well with Netflix at the moment, but thanks!

Oh, wow. I'm really impressed. My roommate and I just finished the first season of Torchwood, and at the end of every episode we are kind of boggled by the team. We keep watching, of course... But we are boggled. Well, and we love Jack and think Ianto is adorable.

What line of work do you go into after being a spy?
I just got around to watching Quantum of Solace. I think you run off to an island to hide from anyone who knows you.

I'm telling you, Torchwood is tame compared to MI-5.

Probably a good plan. :D

See also ALIAS and XF. And really, it seems like a good plan to me. As long as it isn't Lost island.

would love to see Tom and Zoe accidentally running into each other on the outside. I'm curious as to what they'll actually do now.

Did you know they got married in real life? They waited to date until he was off the show (and she was divorced from husband #1) and had a kid with the second on the way when they tied the knot.

It was especially fun when he showed up on Ashes to Ashes. Totally different from Tom (and Mr. Darcy).

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-04-15 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Did they really? How funny. :D

And Mr. Darcy! THAT'S where I've seen him before! *puts a mark on UK Actor Bingo*

[identity profile] stephdub.livejournal.com 2009-04-15 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
They also did a movie together that was cute... and now I'll have to IMDB the name because I totally can't remember it. Death at a Funeral! Also, right now PBS is airing Charles Dicken's Little Dorrit, and he's a main character in that.

Yeah, I love me some Matthew McFadden.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
How is Little Dorrit? Is it worth a watch?

[identity profile] fiona-conn.livejournal.com 2009-04-15 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Spooks is its UK name : )

I watched Spooks up to te beginning of season three. At that point it just dull and sort of lost it's way. I'll stick to the first two seasons only with this one...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still pretty entertained. S4 has had some pretty interesting plotlines so far as well.

[identity profile] anti-social-ite.livejournal.com 2009-04-15 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
I have been told that it's a good idea to watch this. Because. Well. Richard Armitage! :P

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
He can never be a bad thing! I normally don't follow any actors, but RA is one exception. :D

[identity profile] blackcat-1.livejournal.com 2009-04-15 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
RA is the hottest thing on Earth. Not only in Spooks, but also as Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood and John Thornton in the adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South.

GUH.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
*NODS* I first saw him in N&S and then in Robin Hood. Both were *greatly* enhanced by him. :D
