I've been wanting a treadmill for years. I'm not a naturally athletic person, but I do like walking. When I worked downtown San Diego, I actually would jog on my lunch break. But with my current job, it's just not very easy to do. And I don't like to do it around where I live - too many cars and too few sidewalks. So I've gotten pretty out of shape.

Why not just join a gym, you may ask? Because I know myself. I'll join and I won't go. It's way too easy for me to slack off like that. And it doesn't matter that there are interesting classes there, I won't do it. Aerobics and yoga tend to bore me. I have to concentrate on them just enough that it feels like doing a task. "Okay, downward facing dog. Holding. Holding. Is it time to get up yet? Okay, up. Crap, there's 30 minutes to go yet??" With walking/jogging, I can just go and not think about it.

So anyway, I now have a treadmill!

My current setup is pretty sweet. I just have to move my computer monitor over about 5 feet to my bookcase (the cables are long enough) and I can watch whatever while I'm walking. I just watched the first episode of Chuck while doing it. (HA! Pretty amusing show. I'll have to watch more.)

I don't have any weight loss goals or anything, I just want this to be part of my lifestyle. I just feel better when I'm more in shape.

ONE OF US. ONE OF US. ONE OF US.

Who + Treadmill = awesome sauce. I freaking love my treadmill. I even work at a place that has a free of charge gym I can go to any time and... I don't go. It means schlepping gym bags and finding time during my work day blah blah blah lamecakes. But with it sitting right there in my basement (I can see it from where I'm sitting, though I can look it in the eye because I did run this evening), there's no excuse.

EXACTLY. It's sitting right there, and there's no reason not to!

Color me jealous! I wish I could get a treadmill, because when I do get a chance to go to a gym (as a guest, or when I'm at a fancy hotel with my family), the best part is the treadmill when they have those personal tvs cause I watch something funny with subtitles, listen to upbeat music, and just get into a rhythm. I'd even be willing to save up for one (they're probably not much more than a year's membership at a gym anyway) but I'm still in college and it just doesn't make sense when I'm going from rented apartment to rented apartment. And I just don't have room. Enjoy yours, that's AWESOME!

I'm enjoying it already! :)

Mine doesn't have a TV, but it does have an iPod dock. :D And yeah, I wouldn't want to get one if I was moving around a lot. Mine is HEAVY.

I love my parents' treadmill -- I use it regularly when I'm not recovering from illness (which, given that I work with small children is not as regularly as I would like). I just love exercise that's mindless, that lends itself well to watching Doctor Who or Project Runway or whatever it is that I've been looking forward to.

I wish you luck!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :)

I think that's my favorite part about it - the ability to zone out. I think I looked at my mileage/time only 2 or three times during the whole episode. You just go, and it doesn't matter.

I love using my parents' treadmill! I use it more for running - especially with that whole Couch to 5K program - but I would also want to eventually use it for walking. So far I've had Big Brother on while on it but I might want to add Doctor Who and some sports games whenever they come back!

I just feel better when I'm more in shape.

Me too! Aside from the program it helps me whenever I feel really down about myself. And it just feels great when you get some exercise done. :D

I've seen that Couch to 5k program, but not sure I want to do that. That kind of structure and goals have never worked for me. I usually end up blowing it off.

Supposedly exercise raises serotonin levels, so it makes sense that you feel better - even your mood.

YAY CHUCK!

Treadmills are great, it's the only piece of exercise equipment I've ever bought and actually used and been able t tell a difference with. Although at the moment I need to get back in the habit... I shall use you as my inspiration. :)

I could already feel stretching in muscles that needed stretching. Plus raising the heart rate and so on. I had a little rowing type machine for a while years ago. It was a coat rack.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, sounds like a sweet set-up. And yay Chuck! I like the show a lot - don't love it - but I actually made an effort to watch all of it last year, which I rarely do if it's not a BBC show. XD

And I think exercise is great. Keeps me grounded. I'm more of a gym person, but when I miss more than a couple of days, I really feel it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I've watched a few Chuck eps now and I agree with you so far - I really like it, but I don't love it. I'm not craving a Chuck fix like I do with something like Leverage.

And yeah. Exercise really does work out the kinks and takes care of stress and so on. The trick is finding what you like doing and then sticking with it.

*bleh* I'm now reminded that I haven't worked out properly in days. I've done some gardening this weekend but not enough. I was excellent for the month of August, but I started slacking again. I shall work out tomorrow! As far as your set up goes, treadmill + tv is just about the best way to work out inside.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so easy to get into a rut. My rut lasted a couple of years, unfortunately.

And I do love my setup.

[identity profile] wiggiemomsi.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Bravo for you! I had a bicycle-exercise-machine-type-thingy, and it's PERFECT ... for hanging clothes to dry. A treadmill is MUCH better.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
HA! I had one of those too and used it as a blanket rack. I finally got rid of it.

[identity profile] erateini.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Now I have treadmill envy! I really need to get a treadmill as well, good for you!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! If it'd be something you'd use, I'd totally recommend it!

used to watch my stargate dvds on closed captioned and walked-helped me walk off about 20 lbs. nowadays i do jazzercize-but might get back into the treadmill habit though-it was a good way to get my exercise in.

Wow! Nice job!

[identity profile] okelay.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I joined a gym once, with my sister. she managed to drag me there for about a month. then I failed to go ever again. I remember the treadmills were fun. the rest sucked. I'd join a gym, except I wouldn't go. ever. this gym was literally two blocks away and it was really nice and I couldn't drag my lazy ass over there so I understand.

maybe I should get a treadmill. or go running. it's nearly spring.

If you enjoy running, you should!
