N!F!S

I was reading [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets today and realizing that much of it is about fandoms I've never even heard of, or bitching about other secrets.

Anyway, I was trying to think of "secrets" I have that are f!s-like, but I don't feel the need to make graphics and submit anonymously for.

  • I tried watching Firefly twice and gave up both times. I failed to see the awesome. Not!Secret Because: Blasphemy to much of my flist.

  • Tom Baker skeeves me the hell out, and probably related to that, I don't much care for Four. Not!Secret Because: He's like a UK national treasure.

  • I'm amused when Dirk Benedict throws a tantrum, and love the snark about him. Not!Secret Because: Why should I care about an actor whose last big role was in the 80s?

  • I don't find David Tennant, Chris Eccleston or Billie Piper outside of their Who roles all that interesting and/or hot. Not!Secret Because: My flist will whack me with nerf bats. XD (Note: That's not to say that I could never again find them interesting with some new role in the future - it hasn't happened yet though.)

  • I bought a big-ass caramel apple at the store today and will devour it at home. Not!Secret Because: IT'S A CARAMEL APPLE AND IT'S MINE.

Same here, I went right of Four when I saw him pat Sarah Jane on the head hen she was trying to tell him something. (though it made me really long to read a fic where Four meets Donna and trys to do the same thing!)

Yay Fandom Unsecrets! I like making those!

And I feel sorry for people whose f-lists are apparently so terrifying that just saying that you ship/don't ship/would hit some pairing/person/thing that is really not all that unusual to want ship/not ship/hit would get them, like, kicked out of ElJay or something (idk what these people are afraid of happening).

Also: I do not like Four either and I have always failed to grok the Four!adulation. Tom Baker is waaaay on the far side of "quirky" verging into "wtf dude get away from me" territory.

And: Have you seen The Second Coming. Eccleston is a hard man to follow the career of because he has a habit of appearing in atrocious movies, but I <3 that particular movie and totally get the Eccleslove, if only he'd do more movies like that.

I'm not sure either. It's...weird.

Exactly. And he has this bug-eyed surprised look that just annoys me to no end. (Sorry, the guy cannot act. He says lines and mugs for the camera.)

I just...I couldn't handle the way they talked, for one thing. It was like nails down a chalkboard. And then there was a character I felt like smacking, and... I decided not to put myself through any more.

Heh. It took me some actual effort to get into Firefly, after quitting once, but I admit I did eventually find it rewarding. Except I hated the movie. Hated it. Wish it never existed. Pretend it's an alternate universe.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-10-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I tried the movie once too - it was airing on some station. I watched about 5 minutes and wandered off.

The only thing I've ever liked BP as (besides Rose, of course) was Hero in the Much Ado About Nothing part of Shakespeare Retold. And really, that was just residual "THIS IS MADE OF PUPPIES AND SUNSHINE" feelings caused by Damian Lewis' utter and delightful d-baggery.

Also, CE's career choices since DW baffle me.

Many people who can be less bipolar about Who (myself included) class both Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker as entertainers rather than actors in the same sense that the other men who've taken the role have been.

And I adore Jon Pertwee in particular for his work outside of Who, but he and Tom Baker were both pretty much playing themselves or an exaggerated version thereof.

Kinda like John Barrowman playing Captain Jack (at least Who!Jack versus EmoManPainTorchwood!Jack).

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-10-27 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen Jon Pertwee in anything else, nor do I know what he was like in real life, but I didn't get the feeling he was doing some shtick when he did Three. Not like I got from Tom Baker.

And great comparison to JB. Although his camp never annoyed me. I guess it comes down to liking or not liking the actor in the first place.

DT in Hamlet was fantastic. The only other things I've watched him in is TOTA and Blackpool which I watched with my friend when I visted England to see Hamlet. I've never seen BP or CE in anything else. Except I did see CE in an old episode of Poirot which was amusing because he had hair. XD

I have the problem you have with Firefly with Buffy and Angel. FF, weirdly, I sort of liked--not a huge amount, but it was okay. (I have a feeling it has to do with the awesomeness of Nathan Fillion.) Buffy and Angel I know I should like, because it ticks most of the boxes I like to see ticked on a TV show, and yet...nothing. I've seen five or six episodes of both, and it just leaves me cold.

*kind of adores Tom Baker, but could see where he might skeeve someone out*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I was a casual watcher of Buffy and Angel, sort of coming and going as the mood struck. So I never made it into the Joss = God camp.

This is how I feel about fandomsecrets as well. Even when I have an opinion that might be slightly less-than-popular, it's never anything I wouldn't own up to if asked. Like, "I laughed when Ianto died" is not a secret, I will admit to that.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 01:18 am (UTC)(link)

I kind of rolled my eyes when he died, mainly because of Jack's "don't" line. :D I did sniffle when Gwen turned up to look at his body though.

I don't think Joss Whedon's all that awesome. Not!Secret because my flist will tear me to shreds for saying such a blasphemous thing?

That being said, Firefly is my favourite of all his shows (I blame Nathan Fillion and Adam Baldwin. 'kay?)

[identity profile] bluewingedpixie.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 12:41 am (UTC)(link)

I... I'm SHOCKED. This is an unacceptable opinion, beyond belief. Obviously, we cannot be friends anymore.

I mean, I could maybe get past the first one (blasphemy!) given time.
The second is absolutely understandable.
I have no idea who Dirk Benedict is?
This... stretches things a little, but I'm willing to accept maybe you don't want to see these actors in other personalities. Goodness knows I've sat through many an awful movie just to get to the Eccles.

But you won't share your caramel apple!?! *unfriends*

I've had a few opinions I hesitated to share, but it was more in the line of completely over identifying with a character. Then I remembered "Oh yeah, this is a fandom journal!" Although earlier this week I did actually trash a post I was writing for fear of the reaction from my flist. Which was prob exaggerated out of proportion in my head.

He played Starbuck on the original BSG. And also place Face on the A-Team. Nowadays he plays the role of woman hater.

That might be part of it - I like people in certain roles, and seeing them in other things is sometimes weird. Also if they're good, I can get over that.

But you won't share your caramel apple!?! *unfriends*

This is kind of how I get when I read [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets (that said I've gotten kind of addicted to it recently),, while I definitely have fandom-unpopular-opinions that I don't talk about on my journal much that doesn't so much make them secret as something that doesn't come up real often. Since I've started paying attention to it I've been tempted to make a post like this myself with some of my not-exactly-secrets, but it's only been a couple days so I haven't bothered yet. Maybe I'll just follow your lead.

I recently watched Firefly (entirely for Summer Glau, now that SCC is over) and was shocked and somewhat appalled to find myself liking it. Like, a lot. Despite my general disdain for Whedon. Yet Firefly still has my #1 problem with Whedon: his kink for using adolescent girls (or in Echo's case, a childlike woman) as weapons, and especially, for having the people who are supposed to take care of them use the girls as weapons. It disgusts me. And the oh-so-self-consciously-clever dialogue that bugs the hell out of me on Buffy and Dollhouse mostly cracks me up on Firefly, even with the ridiculous accents and wild west BS. WTF? Something strange is going on in my brain. Help!

But yes. I think [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets is just plain silly.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)

So yeah, no defriending from me on that on!

I'm with you, I don't think I have any fandom opinions which I couldn't share with my flist. I suspect for a lot of people, it's everyone who isn't on the flist that is the concern. But for me, if riled up, I generally feel the need to lay unabashed claim to those unpopular opinions as well.
