DW: Waters of Mars

I had to laugh at the beginning - that person in the video clip holding the baby is NOT Rose. Or Lucy. (But the fannish flailing was fun while it lasted. XD) Also, "DOCTOR FUN!" BWAH!

The bit with the Dalek was interesting - that it recognized a fixed point event in Adelaide.

Also interesting was the Doctor during this. He spent it trying to be an observer, but couldn't help getting involved as much as he could. The bit with the Doctor standing there listening to them die was brutal.

But man, the ending was disturbing. The Doctor's really gone off the deep end, changing the fixed point like that - he's bought into his own omnipotence. He's...getting a wee bit scary. Okay, a lot scary. And seems really scared at his looming death, for some reason. Okay, yeah, it's his death, but still. He knows he's just going to regenerate, right?

But in the preview for the next special: Donna! \o/ And Lucy and the Master! And the Master sporting skaterboi hair!! BWAHAHAHAHA!

I don't recognise Ten anymore - not sure how they plan to have the Doctor bounce back and be a light character again with Eleven after all they've put Ten through. And there's no way they can have a whole new season with a dark!side Doctor who looks like he's just got out of high school. Teen!angst, I guess?!

Loved seeing Donna and the Master and Lucy and Wilfred in the trailer for the next special.

I'm not sure how they're going to resolve this all. I'm thinking Nine could have easily gone down this path if Rose hadn't been there to stand between him and that Dalek. He was headed in that direction. The people around him have really held him in check, but unfortunately he's decided he doesn't need anyone.

I've only seen the last half (found a feed then), so I've missed the details at the beginning, however, I had to smile that he was wearing the Sactuary Base spacesuit! And that I had to have a continuity conversastion with myself that he was clearly wearing Ida's helmet because his broke when he fell down the pit.

The scary I could deal with but the end with shooting? Whoa. Family show people! (It was bad enough on Torchwood.)

Yeah, he's got some issues there. And my reaction to him realizing he was going to change time was, "GO BACK AND GET YOUR WOMAN THEN!" And I'm quite happy with Blue!Ten/Rose!

Also, I might have let out happy squeals at Wilf!, Donna and the Master...Especially the Master (and his see through skull, he should have backed off the bleach a bit I think).

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-15 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
:D It had to have been her helmet!

And the ending was bleak. Very bleak. But I was kind of expecting bleak, so it didn't phase me that much. I was, however, surprised at his "I am all powerful" attitude.

*burrows into your arms for a hug, 'cause she's actually physically shaking from the adrenaline rush and pounding heart of watching this episode.*

Yeah. I was scared. >.>;

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-15 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It was really tense. The horrible part was knowing up front they were all going to die, and then having to sit back and watch it. Kind of like the Doctor.

I was so very creeped out by God Mode Doctor.

The moment he started to walk back to the base I was all 'Nonononononononononono! BAD DOCTOR! DON'T GO CHANGING THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE ON YOUR OWN!' and then it he started talking about how he could do what he wanted and that no one could stop him...

I think this is a fantastic way to take Ten into his regeneration. Christmas and New Year are going to be amazingly powerful stories.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-15 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
When he went back, at first I had a "YAY!" reaction. But then things quickly went very very bad. I also thought maybe he could take the survivors to a garden planet or something to live out their lives and pretend they were dead. But no.

And he's at a place we haven't seen him before - it'll be really interesting to see where this goes.

It was v.v. dark, but somehow his behaviour felt logical to me. I can definitely see how happy Ten in New Earth evolved to this dark version over time. I got the feeling that it was more like screw everyone, I'm going to do what I want for once than an actual God complex.

And squee for the preview!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-15 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see the evolution as well. It's not pretty, and it's a line he finally stepped over, but I can see it.

[identity profile] rosie-not-rose.livejournal.com 2009-11-15 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Never seen the Doctor like that. DARK.

So amazing, though. The preview for the next episode - AMAZING.

I'm back to Doctor Who fangirling, and it feels good. XD

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-15 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Very unsettling.

But the preview! YAY!

[identity profile] skippity-doo.livejournal.com 2009-11-15 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, quick post!

Yeah, I broadly agree with everyone else, really. Way bleak and quite scary. He kind of reminded me of the Master at the end there, before he realised quite what he'd done - is that because I know John Simm is returning, or because he was deliberately played that way? Hmmmmmm.

I was quite frustrated by the Doctor's inaction in this one. Tennant has obviously been playing Hamlet for too long, hur hur. Seriously though, the way he was just standing around really bothered me, I just wanted him to LEAVE or DO SOMETHING.

The where he's left the base but is still on the planet, where he snaps, and you hear the little montage, with the MUSIC and everything was just ace.

I'm just watching the end of Confidential. I HAD BEEN WONDERING HOW LONG IT WOULD TAKE THEM TO PLAY LIFE ON MARS. Also hurrah! Danny Hargreaves talking about blowing shit up! And dropping girders on David's head. And Davros.

Props to Tennant for the last 5-10 minutes of this episode, he really had me. He was scared and scary and just wonderful.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-15 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right - he was very Master-ish at the end. He can and will bend the laws of the universe because he can.

On the other hand, I was a bit intrigued by his inaction. Well, sort of inaction. He knows he has to turn away, but he can't turn away. He's stuck.

And DT did a really great job this ep!

[identity profile] bananasandroses.livejournal.com 2009-11-15 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)

I think, after Doomsday and what he did in Journey’s End, that this has always been coming.

Somebody somewhere said that losing Rose destroyed Ten and it would seem that he’s losing his grip on reality now too.

I didn’t find this episode scary. I did, though, find it desperately painful.

And seems really scared at his looming death, for some reason.

Were it not for the fact we know Eleven is coming, I’d buy a refusal-to-regenerate à la Turn Left.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-15 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're right - this has been a long time in coming. He started down this road a while ago, and it's finally all coming to a head.

And it was very painful.

I think, after ‘Doomsday’ and what he did in ‘Journey’s End,’ that this has always been coming.

Honestly, I think this has been coming since he brought down Harriet Jones’s government in “The Christmas Invasion.” I know I’m coming at this as a Doylist, but I think there were hints that this was where RTD was going as far back as “New Earth”—that’s where the whole “lonely god” thing comes from. (And I think it’s telling that there aren’t any scenes like the Doctor/Rose face-off in “Dalek” in season two.)

[identity profile] syokhan.livejournal.com 2009-11-15 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I really thought everything was going to be okay (well, as okay as it gets with most of the expedition dead) and that he was going to take the survivors to another planet/time so that the base is still destroyed and everyone thinks that they're dead when they, in fact, are not.

And then he went all "the laws of time are mine", and OH SNAP, SCARY GOD MODE. So very very wrong. And then "I've gone too far", and the Ood, and the cloister bell, and it seems he's running away again, does it not?

Also, the "captain killing herself" part, very Torchwood.

I also wonder if he seems scared of his death because he thinks he's really going to die, not just regenerate? I mean, he did just break what must be the ultimate rule (or one of those anyway) in the universe...

YES! I thought the same exact thing - he'd save them and take them somewhere else. But noooooo. The scary thing is that even the Dalek turned away from messing with a fixed point. This is...bad. Very very bad.

And I'm not sure where his head is at with this whole death thing.

[personal profile] shaela 2009-11-15 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The Doctor’s really gone off the deep end, changing the fixed point like that—he’s bought into his own omnipotence. He’s… getting a wee bit scary. Okay, a lot scary.

Yeah, that “Handlebars” thing is looking more and more apt, isn’t it?

It was so disturbing watching what the Doctor cold be without someone to hold him in check. Throughout all the specials he's been getting more and more cocky. He's finally broken the "I'm a God" barrier. And it's gonna have consequences.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-16 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, things are going to get really bad. :(

[identity profile] okelay.livejournal.com 2009-11-16 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
the Doctor didn't get a bit scary. he got a lot scary. he is going all the way to the dark side of the force. for all I know he's gonna be buddies with the Master now!

The Doctor needs a hug. especially if it is from Rose.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-16 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Man, he could wind up teaming up with the Master, couldn't he? At least temporarily.

I could barely even watch the scene where he ran back in and "saved" them. It just really, really creeped me out. And then when he was all "Time Lord victorious!"???? *shudder*

I had to go watch "Everybody lived!" again. Clear the palate. Waters of Mars was good, but... yeah. Palate cleanser most definitely in order.

Where is RTD going? How low will the Doctor go? Christmas is going to be interesting, to say the least.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-11-16 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think...maybe RTD is headed for destruction? I've no idea.
