Petty Ranting

  • I'm on my string cheese thing again. Every once in a while I'll curse the food industry for the crappy white cheese stick blobs they label as "string cheese." THERE OUGHTA BE A LAW. Okay, so this conversation is 5 years old, but it still stands. I found some honest-to-god string cheese in an Italian deli once, but it's about 100 miles away. Bah.

  • So here on the West Coast we finally finally have a live event in the same time zone. What does NBC do? TAPE DELAYS IT FOR 3 HOURS. That's right. While the rest of the world watches the opening ceremonies tonight, we'll be blacked out. No getting online to chat in real time things like "did you just see Celine Dion jump out of that paper moose???" My entire TV life has been tape delayed. I hate you, NBC.

  • I really need a third thing to rant about, so... Celery! Yeah. It sucks. But yet people seem compelled to put it in things like chicken salad and tuna salad for absolutely no good reason. MIND CONTROL! IT'S A PLOT!

[identity profile] misssara11.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It sucks for the west coast! I'm glad for my eastern time zone location and the TVU player that will stream the BBC 2 feed.

HMPH.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-02-12 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I have had real string cheese before! It was delicious! And.. stringy! And very salty but that is acceptable because I love salt. Mmm mmm sodium.

I'm trying to concoct a way to watch the Olympics tonight. I don't think it's happening. Hmf.

I... like celery, actually. It is a pointless food, but it makse such a satisfying crunch.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)

MMMMMM. Yes! Real string cheese is salty and dry.

I'm trying to concoct a way to watch the Olympics tonight. I don't think it's happening. Hmf.

Yeah, but you're Canadian! You've gotta watch!

I... like celery, actually. It is a pointless food, but it makse such a satisfying crunch.

I think it all goes back to as a kid we had to eat celery and peanut butter instead of things like cookies. Which is good an all, but to this day I can't stand celery and I only tolerate peanut butter.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-02-12 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It was delicious. It was at my friend's house, and his mom's a vegan or vegetarian or something so I suspect it came from some specialty food store somewhere. But that's the only time I've ever had it, and we did not sell it when I worked at the grocery store, despite our fairly impressive selection.

I KNOW. I accepted this dinner invite like a month ago without realizing, lol.

Omg, with raisins? ANTS ON A LOG? I hated that, they used to try and give it to us at Brownies (um... is Brownies Canadian?)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember the good stuff from when I was a kid - back before absolutely everything was processed and pumped full of chemicals.

And I forgot about the raisins. I don't like raisins either. :D

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-02-12 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the processed stuff as a kid, but the real stuff was way more delicious. I've only had it maybe twice, and both times we just kind of sat down and raided my friend's supply, lol.

I hate raisins. Why would you take a good thing (grapes) and turn it into something terrible? This applies to all dried fruit.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The worst is when you pick up what you think is a chocolate chip cookie, but NO! RAISINS! You can practically hear the cookie doing a "MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-02-12 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
THAT IS THE WORST. IT IS LIKE THE UNIVERSE IS MOCKING YOU. NOT COOL, UNIVERSE.

That happened to me at work last week. Hmf.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You can't by any chance watch it live on Hulu or something, can you?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. Hulu's directing me to NBC's site. I wonder if they'll have it...

[identity profile] goodtoast.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
SO ANGRY WITH NBC.

Not only are they tape delaying it for us, but they've actually blocked CTV (the Canadian Olympics station) from letting Americans watch it live on the internet. What the hell, NBC? Pretty much the entire world gets to watch the opening ceremony live...except us.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
THOSE. BASTARDS.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-02-12 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)

Really? Was that NBC or was it just the standard regional copyright issue which is the bane of my tv-watching existence?

[identity profile] goodtoast.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
According to my local newspaper NBC is actually blocking it. I got on CTV's website yesterday and was able to play a couple of other videos just fine, but sports videos were a no no.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-02-12 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha NBC you douche. Why would you.. tape delay.. the Olympics..? That's pretty lame.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Money.

[identity profile] goodtoast.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
...and it just makes me want to break through their internet chains even more. I shouldn't have to go to such lengths to watch the Olympics, but I will. If only to piss off Jeff Zucker and his shiny, shiny, bald head.

[identity profile] morgaine-nicely.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
yeah it's on CTV now, last time it was on CBC and i watched it there...it's SO FRIGGING RIDICULOUS....

[identity profile] poohmusings.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So here on the West Coast we finally finally have a live event in the same time zone. What does NBC do? TAPE DELAYS IT FOR 3 HOURS.

*fumes right with you* This is exactly what NBC did during the Summer Olympics. Many of the swim finals occurred during PST's primetime (8-9pm) so they could've totally aired it live for us. But NOPE! They held on to that footage until 11-bleeping-o'clock. Beyond ridiculous.

You know, I honestly had no clue you felt so strongly about string cheese. How did I manage to miss your rant from 5 years ago? EDIT: Ah, after clicking the link, I see it isn't actually YOU ranting. Heh.

BAH! And it's not like NBC doesn't have enough cable channels! They could have aired it there if they didn't want to air it on the main channel.

And URG. I'd forgotten about NBC's style of covering the Olympics. Instead of doing anything live, they feel the need to repackage it. :P

:D I'm surprised I haven't ranted about it before, but maybe it's one of those posts I wind up deleting after I type it. XD

(I did find an email to my brother on the subject, and we're of the same mind - we got the good stuff as kids and now we can't find it.)

[identity profile] chloris67.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
TAPE DELAYS IT FOR 3 HOURS.

You have to be kidding me! I live on the east coast but I don't think that we should be in charge of when sport events start. Or, in this case, when you get to see since they started earlier! All the tape delays and repackaging has really put me off the Olympics in a big way.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The more I'm reading about this, the more I do not want to watch ANY of the Olympics on NBC. Not only will the opening ceremonies be delayed for the west coast, but many of the events as well.

[identity profile] ivydoor.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That is utterly shitty of NBC to do that. I blame Comcast. :P

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I just REALLY don't want to watch it on NBC now. At all.

[identity profile] ivydoor.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't say as I blame you. They've been particularly failtastic lately.

[identity profile] morgaine-nicely.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
i'm still tryin gto figure out how to watch it on the comp. apparently there are ways to do so with the P2P stuf but the ones i got were in CHINESE! *sigh*

[identity profile] goodtoast.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, for some reason I feel like Comcast would have done a somewhat better job. I don't know, are there evil people lurking in Comcast that I don't know about?

[identity profile] ivydoor.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about evil, exactly, but magnificently incompetent and asshole-ish definitely apply.

[identity profile] merriehaskell.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Celery is for crunch! Boo to the celery hater!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
NYAH!

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you are adorable. *Pinches cheeks* I am a big fn of Polio string cheese.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Polio string cheese? Did they name it after the disease? O_O

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG. Total typos. LMAO. Polly-O. You can so laugh at me about that one for years to come.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
XD

Celery IS EVIL and does nothing for my tastebuds!

*sigh* NBC does this all the time. Last summer, when I was going crazy over Wimbledon tennis semi-finals 5 hours away in the UK (morning here in EST), it was actually airing live on ESPN2, but they actually had to stop airing the actual match because NBC was showing it at noon. So they aired a rerun of the previous year's championship for the last hour and a half of their airtime just because NBC is a big meanie. (I found *cough* alternative means of watching the match without NBC.) And then NBC aired the match that ESPN2 had already aired, and then aired the one they'd forbidden EPSN2 to show. By that point, most rabid tennis fans had already seen it and given up on NBC.

The fact that they're doing the same damn thing for the Olympics is even worse. Good grief, NBC, get with the 21st century already. And you guys wonder why you're doing so bad.

As to celery, I actually like the flavor, but really dislike the texture. Not the crunchiness, per se, although I do dislike when someone puts something crunchy in something soft (jello??!!! Seriously???), but the stringiness. Which is why I actually prefer the cheese stick blobs; no strings. :-)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I have MUCH RAGE for this at the moment. Fuck the Olympics. Fuck NBC.

[identity profile] morgaine-nicely.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
if you're able to get the tennis channel get it. i plan to so i DONT miss friggin wimbledon this year because of espn and nbc....and espn isn't even owned by nbc/universal....argh. i hate them

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I've got the Tennis Channel, but they weren't allowed to play it either. I think they were playing reruns at the time. *throws up hands*

[identity profile] morgaine-nicely.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
yes i hate nbc even MORE now that i see we are tape delayed.....another reason to avoid bob "i'm an idiot who talks too bloody much" Costas.
DAMN ABC did a better job with the olympics years ago.....

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I heard he was horrible. I'm hoping that if I do eventually see it, it'll be from a different broadcaster.
