MAKING IT UP.

tbh now I feel like asking British people to find out if it's ~just me or if this is just a weird American/Canadian thing.

*is curious*

I've heard the term pretty much all my life. I think it's even on tea boxes.

I am Belgian and they definitely sell Orange Pekoe tea in (some of) our shops.

Ah ha! Maybe it's just an isolationist UK thing!

I'm guessing that it must be tea because of your tag. But I've not heard of that name myself.

But I'm not a person knowledgeable about tea. So! Hah.

It is tea! It's a grade of black tea.

I'm not wild either, but I'm not wild about black tea in general.

I tried orange pekoe tea on the ferry to Victoria. First time I ever saw it. It's pretty good, though nowhere near as good as my favored type, oolong. They also had it in our hotel room in California on one of our Disney trips. We do have it in our grocery stores here, but they have huge selections of teas for some reason, plus we have three tea shops in this town.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd definitely take oolong over orange pekoe. I wish we had more of a tea selection around here. There's just not a high enough demand probably. When people drink tea, it's usually iced tea, which doesn't need to be all that special.

[identity profile] misssara11.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I love orange pekoe. It was one of the first, if not the first, hot teas I ever drank. Made me fall in love with it. I was not aware that it was a weird thing!

There are actually some orange teas (I don't think they are pekoes though) that taste like jello right after you stir in the boiling water. So good.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I had no idea it was a weird thing either! I just assumed it was a normal tea thing! It's like suddenly finding out that when people in the UK talk about milk, they're referring to horse milk instead of cow milk!

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
OPAL. 37 OTHER PEOPLE KNOW WHAT ORANGE PEKOE IS. IT'S A THING.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW, RIGHT?

WOO TEA!

Orange pekoe was the tea I brought back with me from my first trip to the UK (during which I had learned to love tea). Then I had to hunt around to find it here, you know, before tea became a Thing, because all you could find at the supermarket back in the dark ages was Tetley and Lipton. TRUFAX.

I frequently see it on the shelf when I buy groceries, but I always thought it was orange flavored tea, so I never bought any. But actually black tea I should totally try it!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-10-08 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was orange flavored for a long time too!

[identity profile] elly427.livejournal.com 2011-10-08 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I have always thought it was called Orange Pekoe because it was sort of an orange-y colour when brewed, though I suppose that is just the colour of tea. Hmm.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-10-08 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
:D Yeah, I think so.

[identity profile] yourebrilliant.livejournal.com 2011-10-08 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've never had any but I did know it was tea. I like mango indica and imperial spice, personally.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-10-08 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, that sounds good!

[identity profile] driftingatdusk.livejournal.com 2011-10-08 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
We tried Orange Pekoe when we were in Vancouver but hadn't heard of it before then. Didn't like it much so had family and friends keep us well stocked up on English teabags!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-10-08 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Good friends! I'm not wild about it either.

[identity profile] outforawalk.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Late to the party, but Orange Pekoe is generally what everyone I know uses to make Iced Tea. No one I know drinks it hot.
