MAKING IT UP.

tbh now I feel like asking British people to find out if it's ~just me or if this is just a weird American/Canadian thing.

*is curious*

I've heard the term pretty much all my life. I think it's even on tea boxes.

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister's response to if she's ever heard of it: "No, it sounds like it's off a Chinese menu."

D-the-trainspotting-accountant is also clueless.

I think you're in denial.

*SNORTS*

I actually thought that was the standard black tea when I was growing up. Like if someone said "black tea" that's what they meant. And since it doesn't taste like oranges, I figured it was because the box was always orange.

[identity profile] mylittleredgirl.livejournal.com 2011-10-08 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I feel the need to admit that I actually still thought it was the fancy name for Standard Black Tea until I saw this post and learned that other people hadn't heard of it.

lol well I knew tea snobs would have heard of it, but I've yet to find a normal person who has.

I shall email my mother. She is my last hope - she's a fairly normal person but might know this sort of thing.

I thought it was on labels!

There's even a tea shop in London called Orange Pekoe!

Re: *cough*

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
London is fucked up enough to be another country. Shops stay open after 6pm there!

Also I do not doubt that tea snobs have heard of it and know exactly what it is, but NOT NORMAL PEOPLE.

BUT. EVERYONE IN THE UK IS KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT TEA. DO NOT DESTROY THIS ILLUSION.

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW ABOUT TEA. IT COMES IN BAGS. YOU ADD BOILING WATER, AND THEN MILK AND SUGAR. THAT IS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TEA.

APART FROM THE FACT THAT SOME PEOPLE DRINK FRUIT AND HERB TEA BUT THEY ARE WEIRD.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never had milk in tea. Seems...odd. Honey is good though.

And my "tea" of choice is rooibos, so...

Re: *cough*

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I have what people call 'builders' tea', which is milk and two sugars and not something posh like Earl Grey.

Is rooibos a brand? Or another made up word like orange pekoe?

Re: *cough*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually don't like Earl Grey. Bleh.

But rooibos is an herbal tea. Redbush or red tea. It has sort of a grassy flavor and I much prefer it over real tea.
