Music recs!

I'm groovin' on Live's Throwing Copper album. Yes, again. Just love it! :)
I can feel it comin' back again
Like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
    I can feel it.
Music recs! Need music recs! New songs. Old songs. Anything! Well, not *anything*. I swear if there's a boy-band, Celine Dion or Top-40 rec in there, I'll whack you with a stick!

Reccing music - my favourite thing *g*

Will get back to you with a looooong list.

Mwahahaha!

Does Shakira count as top 40? (she asked, suffering from her own endless-loop obsession...)

Hmmmmmm...

  • Dead Can Dance (pick an album, any album)
  • Aida cast album
  • Lauren Christy (Breed over first album, but both are good for different reasons)
  • Cheb Mami (the guy featured on Sting's "Desert Rose")
  • Sarah Brightman's non-Broadway stuff (Eden and La Luna are her best)

And I really must pick up the PotC soundtrack.

Does Shakira count as top 40? (she asked, suffering from her own endless-loop obsession...)

I'll take Shakira.

Dead Can Dance (pick an album, any album)
Lauren Christy (Breed over first album, but both are good for different reasons)
Cheb Mami (the guy featured on Sting's "Desert Rose")

Never heard of him/her/them. Will check out!

Aida cast album

Oooh! I bet that's great!

Sarah Brightman's non-Broadway stuff (Eden and La Luna are her best)

I have something of her's...somewhere. Hmm. Wait. I was thinking of Webber's Requiem. Will check out! :)

Thanks!

Forgot this in other message. You know, everyone keeps talking about the music, but honestly I didn't pay attention to it. Which is really strange because usually the music is one of the first things to grab me in a movie. Well, I'm going back tomorrow so I'll have to pay attention! :)

I'm all about the Dar Williams love. She's considered a folk singer, but she's quirky and sharp and funny and occasionally heartbreaking.

Here's my Dar Top 10:

"The Ocean"
"When I Was a Boy"
"Iowa"
"Spring Street"
"The Babysitter's Here"
"Mercy of the Fallen"
"The One Who Knows"
"What Do You Hear In These Sounds"
"If I Wrote You"
"Better Things"

Oh, and while I was being extremely ruthless in narrowing the list, I do think Ofra Haza (pick an album, any album -- Desert Wind or Kirya probably best to start) is a necessity. :-)

I've always been a fan of the following:

- Twilight Time by the Platters
- Gypsies, Traps and Theives by Cher
- September Morn - Neil Diamond (gasp! are you laughing at me?!)
- Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight - James Taylor
- Hello Stranger - Barbara Lewis

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Will check that out as well. :)

Oh, have listened to a couple of Dead Can Dance songs - really like them! They make me want to paint. Very cool. Gonna have to get some cds. :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Haven't heard of Dar Williams. Will definitely check out! Thanks!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you can't go wrong with Cher's Gypsies, Tramps & Theives! :)

I'm sure I know the others (have heard them at *some* point in my life) but I'll have to go have a listen again! Thanks! :)

[identity profile] matt1969.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow...a lot of people listing some great stuff... I adore Desert Rose - Cheb Mami (sp?) just adds something so wonderful to that song. Ofra Haza... go for the non-English stuff (*still hurting after her tape containing the non-English In N'Im Alu (sp?) got chewed up*). And Dar Williams is class as well. Along the same lines as Dar I'm going to suggest Cheryl Wheeler - an album such as Sylvia Hotel.

Lately, I've found myself going back into the past - so I've got a wide variety cued up on the computer as early as Three Dog Night - Eli's Coming - right through to Shakira, taking a side swipe through the Rolling Stones, Abba, Chris de Burgh and Big Country.

And of course, I have to go for Kathy Mattea - from whence I get my username. If you like country go for something like Walking Away a Winner. If you want more celtic go for Love Travels onwards. LT was what hooked me *g*

"The Ocean"
"When I Was a Boy"
"Iowa"

Whoah! Two of my favourites in there... can play The Ocean and Iowa over and over and over...

My best mate at college introduced me to Dar by playing As Cool As I Am one night while we were getting ready for a night out... consequently, we were very late *g*

*wanders off singing, "I have a good and I have an evil..."

Music recs!

God, loved Throwing Copper. Loved it to bits.

A.j's top ten recs (as added to by [livejournal.com profile] anxietygrrl).

1.) Flaming Red - Patty Griffin
2.) The All American Rejects - The All American Rejects
3.) The Tea Party - (Pretty much anything they've done.)
4.) Hat Full of Rain - Del Amitri
5.) Modified - Save Ferris
6.) Hat Full of Stars - Cindy Lauper
7.) Distance to Here - Live
8.) Little Earthquakes - Tori Amos
9.) Fumbling Towards Ecstasy - Sarah McLachlan
10.) Silence - Tara MacLean

All albums, all *fantastic*.

You've poked at my not-so-secret weakness! Reccing music!

Anything by Patty Griffin. "Living with Ghosts" for edgy acoustic folk, "Flaming Red" for a rocker, and "1000 Kisses" for just plain beautiful.

Del Amitri, baby. For specific songs, look for 'Nothing Ever Happens', 'Be My Downfall', 'Sleep Instead of Teardrops', 'Not Where It's At'... oh, hell, just anything. "Change Everything" is a good starter album.

Bic Runga is a New Zealand singer/songwriter with a gorgeous, liquid voice. "Beautiful Collision" is her latest album, and a good single. My other fave track from that CD is 'Get Some Sleep'.

If you like Dead Can Dance, try Caroline Lavelle. And if you like Moby, try Heather Duby.

Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Ron Sexsmith, Maia Sharp, Beth Orton, Matthew Sweet, Kasey Chambers, Grant Lee Phillips, Neko Case.

Oranger, Sunset Valley, Spoon, Beulah, Hammerbox/Goodness/The Rockfords/Carrie Akre, Dealership, Alien Crime Syndicate, Moxy Fruvous, Marah, the Eels...

And the Suzanne Vega song, "I'll Never Be Your Maggie May".

This is me stopping now.

Non-English. Got it. Cheryl Wheeler? Have not heard of her (him? them?) and will check out.

Hotel...Hotel California! Haven't heard that in ages! (sorry *g*)

Lately, I've found myself going back into the past - so I've got a wide variety cued up on the computer as early as Three Dog Night - Eli's Coming - right through to Shakira, taking a side swipe through the Rolling Stones, Abba, Chris de Burgh and Big Country.

Yes yes yes!! :D Whenever I need a pick-me-up I haul out Dancing Queen. Bwah!

And of course, I have to go for Kathy Mattea - from whence I get my username. If you like country go for something like Walking Away a Winner. If you want more celtic go for Love Travels onwards. LT was what hooked me *g*

Have not heard Kathy Mattea's stuff. Will have to have a listen. Not really into country. Just about the only type of music I don't care for. Some songs are fun.

I do like celtic though (funny, since they're very related). Will check out Love Travels.

Wheee! Thanks guys!

Already like All American Rejects and Del Amitri! :) And Live (of course). Which Cindy Lauper album is that? *runs to check* Ah - one of the 90s ones. Will have to check out!

Well, I'll look into all of these! :)

Cool! (am listening to clips over at CDNow) She reminds me of Edie Brickell.

Del Amitri, baby. For specific songs, look for 'Nothing Ever Happens', 'Be My Downfall', 'Sleep Instead of Teardrops', 'Not Where It's At'... oh, hell, just anything. "Change Everything" is a good starter album.

Oh yeah. Love Del Amitri! :)

Bic Runga is a New Zealand singer/songwriter with a gorgeous, liquid voice. "Beautiful Collision" is her latest album, and a good single. My other fave track from that CD is 'Get Some Sleep'.

She *does* have a great voice! You know, I've heard the name but can't place any songs. She's also reminding me of another singer...but for the life of me I can't remember who. I *love* singers who write their own stuff. Will have to check her out further.

If you like Dead Can Dance, try Caroline Lavelle. And if you like Moby, try Heather Duby.

Will have to check out both. Just was rec'd Dead Can Dance and *really* liked it, and I do have a weakness for some of Moby's songs. Just love what he does with them.

Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Ron Sexsmith, Maia Sharp, Beth Orton, Matthew Sweet, Kasey Chambers, Grant Lee Phillips, Neko Case.

Oranger, Sunset Valley, Spoon, Beulah, Hammerbox/Goodness/The Rockfords/Carrie Akre, Dealership, Alien Crime Syndicate, Moxy Fruvous, Marah, the Eels...

ACK! This'll keep me busy for a while! :D

And the Suzanne Vega song, "I'll Never Be Your Maggie May".

Don't know it. Will have to check out.

This is me stopping now.

:D Thanks!

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy - Sarah McLachlan

*Dude*

[identity profile] matt1969.livejournal.com 2003-08-24 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
Cheryl Wheeler? Have not heard of her (him? them?) and will check out.

It's a she. And Sylvia Hotel has an interesting mix of serious and lighthearted. The Potato song will stick in your head and Right Way to do the Wrong Thing is S/Jish.

I do like celtic though (funny, since they're very related). Will check out Love Travels.

Right, here's my short celtic list *g*

Kathy Mattea - Roses (actually moreso than LT - the guy who wrote the title cut of LT wrote two on Roses, plus there's an incredible instrumental written by her long-time guitarist)

Ceili Rain - Say Kay-lee (the guy who wrote LT, but I found this album in a Christian store - just so's you know!)

Dougie MacLean - Scottish singer/songwriter - go for a compilation. I've got the Putamayo label one and love it.

The Oyster Band - Welsh and raucous - either Trawler or Deep Dark Ocean (which has one song done in both English and Welsh)

I've got some celtic compilations I'd be happy to burn for you to get a sampler of... it's all British celtic rather than American/Canadian.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-08-25 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the list! Ooo - a compliation? *g*

[identity profile] matt1969.livejournal.com 2003-08-25 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo - a compliation? *g*

I bought a couple when I lived in Scotland. The only ones I've found here tend to be a little on the cheesy side *g*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-08-25 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Cheesy? Well, I'd imagine that folk music from the indigenous area would be the best. :)

[identity profile] matt1969.livejournal.com 2003-08-25 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh absolutely...

... its all modern celtic stuff, btw... a little rock thrown in, but some wonderful stuff all the same :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-08-25 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds great!

[identity profile] matt1969.livejournal.com 2003-09-01 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
When I get a moment I'll see what I can do for you :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-09-03 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Great! No rush. :)
