mrv3000: (dogs - nerdy wienerdog)
Just ordered my overpriced tickets to go see the Dead Sea Scrolls. Why yes, I am a nerd. Have we met?

(Heh. A few people can attest to this when I ditched them in Boston. Well...they probably ditched me. While they shopped I did things like visit the Old North Church and go to the MIT museum. Hooray for the MIT museum! Gears! And things that spin! And drip oil! And you could push them!! I need to go lie down now.)

I was pondering just now. About fic. Where do people draw the line between pairing and gen?

I was thinking, say I write the Doctor and Rose having a bubble gum blowing contest...

And then I laughed to myself for a good long while. Anything written by me involving that as a premise would quickly turn overly cute with extreme amounts of grinning and probably would wind up with post-bubble-gum-excitement cuddle napping. (Although, not nose-to-nose, since that's just silly.)

So say a normal fic writer writes the Doctor and Rose having a bubble gum blowing contest. We'll say it's cute, but no real UST/relationship/flirting in it whatsoever. So you'd definitely call it gen.

But could the author herself also throw a Doctor/Rose label on it? Would you as a reader be a bit miffed since you want/expect to see UST/relationship/flirting/etc. content in shipfics?

I HAVE AN EGGNOG LATTE!!!

Thank you for your attention. You may now return to your life already in progress.

(Also, was briefly amused at the unpacked box in Starbucks labeled "penguins." I amuse easily.)

ETA: Oh, whoops. I forgot to get decaf.

ETA2: I have no idea why, but penguins totally make the cut for decorations in So Cal. (However, snowflakes do NOT.)
